from twitter: "The farmers market planned for the car park at the Merlin in Morningside has been given the go ahead by the Council."

Of course, The Merlin carpark is just across the wall from Edinburgh's Wild West. That would make a good back drop for a market.

I think Mr Nimby was probably more worried about The Merlin catching fire

Mr Nimby needs to remember that fire folk are trained specifically to be able to walk a few meters from the truck to the door so as to avoid issues such as not being able to park any where convenient. Its amazing what can be done with a full time dedicated training regime.

Er, isn't the Harvest Garden florist quite some distance away, up opposite Churchill Theatre? About a quarter-mile away from the Merlin?

If the only 'objecting' quote they could get from a 'local' business was a quarter-mile away, it sort of implies the many dozens of closer businesses actually think the market is a good idea!

I think Mr Nimby was probably more worried about The Merlin catching fire, and burning to the ground because the poor fire engines couldn't get there. Wasn't the blacksmith's forge where The Merlin now stands? That must've caught fire once or twice.

It's only once a month too!!

Actually quite a lot of local people walk to the shops, and there's rather a good bus service.

Only people with reason to be 'upset' would be Waitrose as their (free) car park might get a bit busier.

I really fail to understand the (non-motoring related) logic of the Loopy Lorna quotee.

It seems to go along the lines of "shops are shutting here because business is tough, therefore we must discourage anything that encourages people to come to this area, as more people being here will mean there will be less people here to come spend in my shop".

Surely businesses such as that would be bound to profit from passing trade who might peruse the farmers market then go look for somewhere for a cuppa or bite of lunch.

To be fair to the original complainant, farmers markets are notorious for catching fire. Oh. Wait a moment. That's never happened, in the history of ever.

The chocolatier/florist is probably upset because there will be competing chocolatiers and florists at the market.

Re: the fire hazard. What about the fire hazard of cars, each with up to 70 litres of petrol, closely parked together in an enclosed space (as they normally do in that car park)...?

i would love a farmers market near us.

The Yoga Centre opposite would be ideal.

Anyway, it's all speculative as *drum rolllll* i am leaving TBC at the end of the month to 'work on other projects', my retail mojo has been sapped out of me by many factors - things like this article for one. I decided at xmas it was time to give up the fight and pass that baton to someone with more strength.

It's funny how The Motorists suddenly develop a social conscience and become very concerned about the environment/fire hazards/safety/whatever when some idea that would have the effect of restricting driving comes around, but don't seem too bothered about these issues at any other time.

Good grief, what is wrong with people?

Such a lack of foresight that it could bring new people who might then hang around and come into your shop as well...

I love this comment: "Morningside used to be quite exclusive and this open-air market is going to bring down the tone of the area" Ooh, those ruffians, coming with their organic produce and gentrification.

"Resident David Glass, 70, whose home backs on to the car park, has started a petition against the plans and claims the market could pose a fire risk"

I like the comment that it's 'going to make the area really congested' as well. That's a hideously congested area anyway, it's hard to see how it could be worse!

Why are so many people with businesses so idiotically blinkered to opportunities that are presented to them? Why on earth would a choclatier and florist not be thinking, "right, I wonder if I can get a board out or a poster up (or even a stall!) to take advantage of this influx of people..."? Instead they think, 'ooh, those folk will take up parking spaces'. She even complains that weekends are when they have to 'make up' for it being quiet during the week, and yet they don't want the area to be busier with more potential customers than usual????

Argh!

Seriously?... one of the reasons for not wanting it is that parking will be limited. Jesus wept.

You would have thought people would want to live in a vibrant part of town rather than trying to maintain it as a car park instead.
