Thanks for the suggestions all, guess I will abandon the path behind Heriot's after all. Think I'm going to suck it up and take the hill up to Braid Hills on Monday morning instead. An easy thing to say from the couch on Friday night!

I have just surfaced from a good half hour playing around on CycleStreets - cant believe I didn't know it existed.

This one is a bit more adventurous (OK with 28 tyres - probably...)

The apparent deviation around Liberton is because there seems to be a section missing in OSM/CycleStreets. There is a path (slightly thrilling descent) which might not be 'suitable' unless dry.

Depending on exactly where you are starting you could go by Spylaw Road, South Ettrick Rd, Tipperlin Road, through the NW corner of the hospital.

Then Morningside Park, or Millar Crescent through to Jordan Lane (depending on whether you prefer a right-hand turn onto Morningside Road or off Morningside Road.

"

Roughly -

If you want to throw some watts around, then stay on Craighouse Road up the steep bit, go down the back via Morningside Grove, sprint along Greenbank Drive(a rather pleasantly surfaced and treelined flat road), and then Braid Hills Road->Drive, which has to my mind some of the best views of Edinburgh.

About 50% longer, good bit harder, 114% prettier.

The 38 route is probably the one I would use myself. However, an alternative could be along the canal, Gilmore Place, Meadows, Quality Bike Corridor (Causewayside) to Kings Buildings. Much flatter route although a bit longer and involves the dreaded turn by the Kings.

If that gate on Myreside is open, then the route is cycleable, but fairly rough for about half of the way.

cyclestreets.net can suggest other options if you want more ideas. I'd go with a modified version of their "quietest" route - quite a bit longer than the direct way but it has greenery and lots of quiet roads, especially through the Grange.

Hi Two Tired,

The path you've spotted is (probably) going to be part of the Family Network that the council talks about a lot (but doesn't do much about).

That would take you through the Royal Edinburgh Hospital and allow you to hook onto the bicycle contraflow on Caanan Lane before snaking through the Astley Ainslie Hospital. From there, choose a couple of quiet roads through the Grange to take you to Blackford Station, and then up the hill.

Currently though the gate on Myreside Road is usually closed, and even if you could get through I'm not sure what the access is like.

Welcome!

I have been across the path you mention between Colinton and Myreside, but it is pretty hard going. I don't think it is accessible between Myreside and Morningside (but could be wrong).

Afraid I usually follow the 38 bus route too when heading in that direction!

Firstly, hello all and thanks to Chdot for setting me up with an account!

Now to the point of my post - I moved to near Harrison Park this Winter and also started a PhD at King's Buildings. Now that the daylight hours are improving, and the weather (fingers crossed) is holding I am back on my bike again. Not to mention that totting up all the hours and pennies I have donated to Lothian buses, and will never get back, is keeping me up at nights.

So I am looking for advice on commuting routes. Thus far I have simply followed the 38 bus which seems like a reasonable enough route albeit containing a fair few 'tucked in elbows' bits and appalling surface now and then. I guess I was spoiled in my last two commutes (one along the canal and the other up the innocent railway path) but I miss seeing the odd bit of green on my travels in. And I will admit to liking the odd day of just meandering in through nice scenery, either posh bits of Edinburgh where I can dream or dare I wish open parks, rivers and trees!

From the looks of it there seems to be a path leaving Myreside Rd, paralleling the railway all the way across to Mornignside Rd. Has anyone tried this way? I will probably try it out this weekend but any thoughts would be great. As would any other suggestions as to greener routes to follow, I dont mind going a bit out of my way, a 10-15 minute commute is laughably short afterall.

I concidered the Hermatage of Braid too but I havent been there in years and I remember it being pretty jarring on 28c tires.
