@ fimm, they are quite polite in Balerno so no one local would bother with your primary. You are right though they have fixed more guttering bits which is good, my pal semi paralysed
from coming down in way you describe and mudguard jamming in brake blocks causing him to go over handlebars. So you were until now safer in middle as you describe but some of the bad bits fixed. My view remains, nice job on some of the slightly less important bits, shame the really dangerous foot of the hill not tackled but I did wonder before the buddster confirmed if it could be done without road closure

Well for various reasons I didn't go back via the Long Dalmahoy Road - but I think there may be some new tarmac patches on Lanark Road West itself, on the direction going into town?

I'm struggling to remember what was there before as I normally absolutely hoof it down there well out in the lane as the surface near the edge of the road is very poor all the way from where it straightens out at the top of the hill. If I give it some oomph I can hit 30 from the top of the hill and high 20s thereafter and therfore have no compunction about sitting well out in the lane as no one could possibly mind sitting beinhd me until we get to the red light, could they?

@ the Buddster I would say no, unless much work was done recently, will check

When I looked before Easter a nice bit of Tarmac had gone down at the top of ravelrig, frankly where it was less needed. The churned up road at the foot of the first hill section on the corner not touched. If it needs a road closure, I vote close it and fix it before I come off please.

Just spoke to the lead from our Roads Team. We've done as much of the route as we could with the money we were allocated. I know there are a couple of sections of Ravelrig which are still to be done as they require road closures. I believe the majority of the work has been done though.

There is still a bit to do on the route but we're applying for more money from this years (2013-14) cycling budget to carry out the remaining repairs.

I'm interested to hear what you think on whats been done. I'm hoping to get up there next week on my bike to check it out in person too but that will depend on time available and I'm not optimistic.

@the Buddster, yes I am co-chair (largely figure head and occasionally asked to write a bit of a spiel).

The film that Scotmid made might have my answer on how to replicate a cinema in your own village. The director lives in the village in the west I grew up in. In case i am on cutting room floor

1. You need a range of committed talented committee members (tht is why I am largely figurehead)!so we have great web design guy, great lawyer, great technical expert, contacts in the drinks trade, popcorn makers, and loads of grafters
2. Check out other models, gullane wipe the floor as the village hall is now largely a theatre / cinema, but Biggar little cinema good.
3. Decent premises, ideally long thin building helps with the throw of the projector. Also if affiliated to a village hall or such like then the licence issues are cheaper
4. Funding, for decent sound and projector.

Somewhere, like, oh, I don't know, Ratho, should be able to replicate this venture.

Fingers crossed for funding

Hi gembo. Yeah, personally I think it's a really interesting project as I've been working with community groups for years and I studied media and communications at Uni. So, it ticks both boxes for me. Am especially interested to see if it could be replicated in other areas.
Are you part of that group?

Also some pretty mean lookin vehicles parked on bridge road. Hopefully they will be tackling the shocking surface on LRW from the corner to ravelrig hill.

Just showed the Professional Officer your photo of the work on Broomhouse Path, above. He's said that this is the same type of repair they will be carrying out on the NCR 75 route we have been discussing. He referd to it as a "permanent patching repair".

The other patching you refer to is the "make safe" work which is carried out until a permanent repair can be made. I'm happy to report this is not what they will be doing on NCR 75.

Apologies for any confusion. Sometimes our teams forget that I'm not an engineer.

"its patching work which the team are carrying out"

Unfortunately CCE people are all too used to coming across the patching 'method' which involves a shovel of tar thrown into a crack and bashed 'flat' by the back of the shovel (or something).

This was the Broomhouse Path on Saturday, a surprisingly competent bit of work, which was being copied in several places -

*UPDATE*

Have spoken to the lead officer about the points raised. He's informed me that a team will start working their way up Ravelrig Road on Monday. They will be working towards Long Dalmahoy Road.
Once they've done Ravelrig Rd they'll start working down Long Dalmahoy Rd starting from the top of Ravelrig heading towards the railway bridge.

After a couple of weeks another team will join the first team doubling the resources carrying out the work.

After this has been done the stretch from the top of Ravelrig Rd towards Heriot Watt is next.

Just so you know depending on how much work it takes to repair Ravelrig and the first section of Long Dalmahoy the team may[i] have to apply for additional money to complete it. However, this won't be clear until a good amount of the work has been carried out.

Thanks for all your feedback on this. I hope you are finding this beneficial. I know that we are. I'm also keen to getting your feedback on the completed repairs.

Does anyone have any questions on any of this?

No problem.

As I said, in my opinion fewer mends done well are much better than more mends done badly (i.e. leaving an uneven surface), as with some of the tarmac patches I photographed.

Thanks to everyone so far who has submitted comments/issues in this area. I've taken your feedback and emailed it to the lead roads officer on this project. Hes on leave today but I'll catch-up with him tomorrow and see if I can get you an update or comments back.

Special thanks to fimm for taking the time to go out and take photos of the area. I'll make sure the lead officer gets a copy of them.

Work is due to start on the 4th of March so you still have a couple of days go give more comments if there is anything else in this area you'd like to raise?

Don't really have anything to add, you've pretty well covered it. That road is real pain to ride on, you end up on the wrong side of the road hoping nothing fast is coming over the blind summit.

This was one particularly bad bit on Long Dalmahoy Road itself:

and another, just getting to the junction:

I didn't take any of the railway bridge area as you obviously know about that.

Hope that helps!

Very blurry shot of Ravelrig Road looking down

and looking up from the same spot.
Crude patching of those holes isn't really worth the effort, in my opinion; if you really want to make cyclists happy we like smoooooooooooooth tarmac! (Don't all road users?) The unpleasantness is in the bumpy, rattly ride you get.
However those long holes in the middle of the road are particularly dangerous.
