1 million new cars in a month! That's 3000 miles of additional queuing at traffic lights...

Most car makers are 'encouraged' by their respective governments. Was a good bit in Herald about how few electric vehicles are in this sales boost.
'Everyone' thinks they're fab but would rather have a car that could operate lobger distances... even if they only do that not so often.

European car sales fell 5.6% in June

European carmakers have been cutting prices and manufacturing capacity Continue reading the main story

New car sales in Europe suffered their worst June since 1996 with demand falling to 1.134 million vehicles, down 5.6% from the same month last year.

The UK was the only major car market to expand, with sales up 13.4% in June and 10% for the six months.

I'm sure the government sees this sort of thing is encouraging...

Vicky Redwood, chief UK economist at Capital Economics, said the UK's performance was likely to have been boosted by the government's Funding for Lending Scheme (FLS). "There are quite favourable finance deals available to buy cars. And generally UK consumers have been a bit more willing to spend," she added.

So, basically we are subsidising generous finance terms on new motors for folk who have excess cash to burn.....meanwhile Network Rail has to find £2 billion of savings.

Sigh. UK is a complete basket case where transport economics is concerned...

EU car sales hit 20-year low for May as recession hurts

Registrations dropped 5.9% to 1.04m in May, compared to a year ago, according to the industry body, the ACEA.

This is the lowest level for May since 1993 when new registrations plunged below one million.

The UK was the only country to report a rise in sales, with sales up 11%.

Quelle surprise!

Haven't you heard, stock exchange is up, everything is OK again.

More seriously, people who did spend less after 2008, and would have normally replaced their cars after 3 years now have 5 year old cars. Sales had to go up again at some point given they were depressed for so long.

People are people, and people like shiny things, whether your thing is bikes, or cars, or boats, or whatever, nothing more satisfying than a new one.

"Funny sort of recession we're having, isn't it"

I was in London on monday - Canary Wharf - and can report that the recession is not happening in that part of London.

Stock markets are also at all time highs - wonder what happens next, we have been here before !!

Company cars and discounted offers take up a lot of the 'new car sales'.

Even in times of recession and cutbacks companies compete for staff and a company car (or the cash equivalent) is still a perk where I work.

And whatever anyone tells you, a company car is not always a horrific tax hit (compared with running and insuring a new-ish car) so these sales are sticking around for some time yet.

Obviously people need cars more than CDs

which decade are you living in? ;)

What ever happened to the teleworking 'revolution'?

The director complains that nobody is ever around anymore!

Though if people are buying stuff on the Internet and supermarkets deliver, why do people need cars??

"Funny sort of recession we're having, isn't it"

Certainly a lack of we're all in it together.

In recent times many people have been spending less - party to reduce their personal debt and some due to job insecurity.

Obviously this has all affected the (retail) economy.

Now (presumably) some people feel less worried about the future (in spite of more apparent/imminent spending cuts) so now they are more willing to spend money on things they have been putting off and must have.
