It was just the indexing that was out before, fixed that in January. It's been seized for, hmm, don't actually know?

I tried to use it last Saturday, so I know it has been seized since at least then, and I last used the front mech probably in the second week in January. I was going to sort it at the weekend, but other, more interesting, not fixing bike things seemed more appealing. :)

I'll fix it at the weekend, might even fit that chain and cassette that I've been putting off for the last month too....

There is *always* something not working on my bike, even when I take it for a bike mechanic service something's broken again in a month.

For now , I'll continue to go the muddy way. :)

"
Dear Sir/Madam,

A90 CYCLEWAY UPGRADE, BURNSHOT

The City of Edinburgh Council is currently progressing a scheme to enhance cycling and walking provision between Edinburgh and the Forth Road Bridge. This scheme supports walking and cycling policies detailed in the Council’s current Local Transport Strategy and Active Travel Action Plan.

The current phase of this project involves upgrading the path between the section completed last year (Burnshot Wood) and the Burnshot junction. It is currently anticipated that construction for this phase will commence on 1st April 2014, although further details will be provided closer to the time.

In preparation for the cycleway upgrade, it is necessary to carry out vegetation clearance works adjacent to the A90 carriageway. To facilitate these works, the following is required:

Closure of A90 Southbound Off-Slip Road at Burnshot

Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd February 2014

Closure of A90 Foot/Cycleway (between B924 Chapel Gate and Burnshot Junction)

Saturday 22nd to Friday 28th February 2014

During the slip road closure on the 22nd and 23rd February 2014, a temporary diversion route for southbound vehicles will be signed from South Queensferry, on both the A90 and the B924.

The A90 will remain open to vehicles at all times, however an off-peak lane closure will be in operation to ensure a safe working area for the contractors.

A temporary diversion route for pedestrians and cyclists will also be available through Dalmeny Estate for the duration of the works. This can be accessed from the main entrance to Dalmeny House at Chapel Gate on the B924 to the north, and the Burnshot flyover to the south. Whilst the path closure is in effect, the diversion will be clearly signed along its full length.

Further similar traffic management measures will be required for the main cycleway upgrade works from April 2014, and further information will be provided in due course.

If you have any queries or would like a plan of the diversion route, please contact Mr Callum Smith, Senior Professional Officer (Projects Development) on 0131 469 3592 or c.smith@edinburgh.gov.uk.

The Council would like to apologise for any inconvenience which may arise during the works, and we will seek to minimise any disruption where possible.

"

Apparently, the section between the Burnshot junction and recently upgraded section is to be improved.

Design and plans currently being finalised - to go to tender in approx 2 weeks time. Construction is expected to start in April 2014.

Diversions via Dalmeny Estate again subject to confirmation from landowner.

useful PDF summary, thanks.

re: 14 Why are we limiting speed to 40????

Because cyclists and walkers are forced to cross the road on a blind summit.

Moot point though, as motorists are typically going 55-60mph here, and they won't refrain from that without cameras / enforcement.

Notably I have witnessed police cars routinely breaching speed limit here also.

My shaking head and paddington bear stare have thus far proven to be an ineffectual detterent.

Tree removal from this section *should* also facilitate path maintenance during winter conditions, although that's still unlikely to happen, as its a bit out of town and wouldn't be considered as core.

I'd say so. I've very much against removing trees most of the time but it's really the only practical option in this case. The roots would almost certainly push up any resurfaced areas in time and we'd be back to square one. Hopefully the same number (or more) of trees will be planted elsewhere to compensate.

Frankly, I think this was a far more important section to fix than the previous one as it is not only inconvenient narrow and bumpy but not good for narrow wheel rims. I'll be happy to see this section fixed and it looks like it will be a genuine improvement rather than the plus/minus qualities of the previous "upgraded" section.

That one has only served to make me more conscious of how vulnerable a cyclist is on the section at road level*, and a bit of Armco doesn't really offer protection, seeing as it's designed to deform as a vehicle impacts with it - right into the path of any cyclist who happens to be there at the time of an accident.

*Good, you might say, but being alert to the possibilities is one thing, being a little nervous and wanting past that section faster isn't!

The background information gives details. 3 metre to 3.25 metre wide path, new retaining wall built on the embankment, trees gone, barrier on the high bit to stop you falling down the slope and onto the road.

Should be pretty good once they get the whole length of the path widened and resurfaced. This project will at least get rid of the worst tree root slope section, at long last.

I'm normally pretty good at reading drawings but I can't really see what this one is saying.

Are they going to widen the path on the current "tunnel of trees" at section 5, then? Doing that and beating down the tree roots will be a massive help.

"
A key section of this route is the existing path running parallel to the A90 between the Burnshot and Dalmeny junctions. This part of the route has been split into five sections. The improvements to Section One, on the B924 (between Dalmeny Main Street and the A90 Burnshot junction), were completed in 2011, while Section Four (at Burnshot Wood) was completed in August 2013. The next stage of the project will focus on delivering improvements to Section Five, which continues south east towards Edinburgh from Section Four.

Only scary bit is just entering the trees while going North (is that Burnshot?) - it's a very fine line between the brush on the right and the first tree on the left. I've ordered an uprated headlight which should make a difference!

@skotl

They try and leave it to the end of autumn so they can cut back all the foliage and deal with the debris the same time that they do the cursory sweep of the fallen autumn leaves.

Its a labour-saving exercise but leaves us all in the lurch every single year.

Ask them to do it too early, and they won't be back later when the leaves are falling most, and we're left with an excess of dodgy hazardous winter mulch.

Naturally this wouldn't happen in a country that actually recognised cycling provision, instead of treating it operationally as merely a walkers pavement.

Until its publicity time of course! Then suddenly, briefly, it will be described as a wonderful "high quality cycle route".

Edinburgh Council are charlatans.

As (I think) has been mentioned, the crash barrier on the new stretch has had some (to be honest) pretty decent tubing added so we're not going to smash our legs on the uprights, but there are still quite a few issues.
Can somebody let me know who we can appeal to for these, and I'll do me best?

1) Heading north/west, after the new stretch ends, there is a pronounced dip, followed by another around 600m on. It's fine in daylight but I can see that catching some cyclists out when it's dark, especially with the oncoming car lights.

2) The undergrowth heading south/east, after the new work, is as bad as ever. I seriously considered heading up myself with a petrol bushcutter but the amount of debris that would be left behind on the path would create a greater hazzard; who can we appeal to, to get this brush cut back?

3) The same section has a few root-incursions into the footpath which, at best, make the ride uncomfortable.
When I'm heading North/West, though, and just entering the "tunnel" I find that it's a close-run thing, between the undergrowth and the tree roots and I wonder how much more dangerous this will become in the darkness.

So all good steps for an important commuting route but I hope they will see it through.

Though then you'd be as bad as those blowing up speed cameras...

Only if the speed cameras were put in the middle of the carriageway (the usual position is the middle of a cyclepath or pavement!)

Someone might also like to move the plastic barriers that some nice work-person had left leaning up against the fence as I was riding down there today. As if the route actually needs narrowing once more...

"
The reflective strip was ordered but hadn't been added - this has now been chased up by the team dealing with this.

We will look in to whether it is possible to move the signs to the back of the footway.

The thoughtlessly positioned road sign pole is back.

Same camo grey colour to match the cyclepath colour.

No reflectives on the pole. No chance of seeing it in the dark.

Replaced on the same spot on the steep part of the hill where a cyclist has banged into it previously.

I give up. (Expecting mythical step change, that is)
