In the town I grew up in, the local Police had lettered punches to punch your home postcode underneath the crank on the frame. When I move to Edinburgh I took my bile aong to St Leonards where the PC behind the counter just stared back at me like I was mad when I asked them to Stamp my bike.

Perhaps an RFID chip scheme like those you inject into pets might help. With each bike the unique RFID's number could be registered to the owner? Obvioulsy dropping the tag into the frame wouldn't work as the metal frame would sheild the tag from the transponder but elsewhere like under the paintwork?

Somthing the theives coudn't easly find and remove might work.

My Charge is datatagged because of it's replacement value, my other two don't justify the cost/aggro, and like Dave i wonder how many "marked" bikes ever get back to their owners in any worthwhile state. If they can't manage it with motorbikes with registration/engine/frame numbers what chance bicycles? :-/
Oh and someone slap me next time I consider reading "comments" on an edinburgh paper article, I should know by now it's like trying to listen to the right wing of combat 18's transport policy branch :-(

It's all very well, but I'd love to know what proportion of marked bikes are returned to their owners, VS unmarked bikes. Is it significantly higher?
