Unfortunately I can't make these times what with work etc :-/
However i had a half hour playing with the gears on Monday night and got them working about 90% of right, and then yesterday coming back from a decent run out the bottom bracket started creaking really badly, looks like I need to rip the transmission apart properly and do some fettling/maint/upgrading... just need to work out what size of BB will fit and I feel some shopping for shiny things coming on... B-)

Had a glance as I left the garage this morning, "7 Speed" on the top of the right hand brake hood. I guess the shifter/mech combination should suit then, still not convinced about the cassette/chain though :-/ I suspect I need to locate an expert and let them have a look (or take some decent pictures?)

Hi Mollie,
It does have a qr skewer, and I do have a suspicion that the wheelset has been changed (and probably the cassette along with it).
I shall have to have a proper look at the rear mech (and count the shifts!!) tomorrow...

Hi Smudge. An OCR 4 is a good frame and I've got a set of ten year old Sora levers and they still work fine. But I think Sora is an eight or nine speed system so perhaps the seller has fitted the wrong cassette. The Shimano specs for Sora rear mechs are here.
The difficulty you describe fitting the rear wheel into the drop-outs is odd. Does it have a QR skewer?

Hello all,
I have a Giant OCR, 4 I think. It arrived at the right price and is very shiny and whizzy... but..
The gears are not working quite properly, and is has had various changes (I suspect) over its life, so I'm wondering what changes/upgrades are best next and unfortunately my background is MTB's so I don't speak roadbike(!)
It has Shimano Sora "flightdeck" brakes/shifters, sora F&R mechs, a triple chainset (can't remember the make) and a shimano 7 speed cassette. Putting the rear wheel in seems to require the rear hangers pushed out quite a way so I wonder if the wheels are not standard either...

Do I take it to someone competent and get them to try setting up the gears? Or are they rubbish and should they be upgraded? What else should be changed on a bike like this? (it already has an aftermarket handlebar stem which by a pleasant fluke is just the right length for me :-)) are there any well known weak points on these bikes?

Excuse the basic questions!
Smudge :-)
