@SRD if you are going to Waverley court, from home, I would take your normal route to work but continue round the meadows and down the pleasance. At cowgate junction you can use ped crossing to turn right then take left up through moray house then left on royal mile and first right and you are there. It is quite nice route once used to it whereas Tollcross Lothian road grass market cowgate is never nice even when used to it, too many bad drivers and RLJing cyclists for my liking

I come in from Fife and take the nepn to 5 ways and then south to Tesco too. The road Bellevue is wide and has a cycle path up halfway. The last stretch up Broughtin Rd narrows but if you push on there are few left turns so you don't have to fear being swipped. At the top of Broughton Rd get off and cross with the peds up and past John Lewis as Gembo said. The only real narrow busy road is Broughton and traffic bunches so slows down nr the top.

As for Scitland St, I have used it heading North but going TO WORK its cobbly hence slow on the bike and the circus between Scotland St and Dublin St is most dangerous as vehs sweep round on both sides aiming for London St and as you slowly bump over cobbles on that bend heading for Dublin st isn't my idea of a safe route. At least Bellevue to Broughton the roundabout has traffic going in only one (cloxkwise) direction and its flat and the tarmac surface means you have a chance at a good speed round the roundabout.

@Giantbikes87 any updates?

I had to go to waverley court myself, so tried the route I had suggested from top of telfer subway. It is one i often do on saturday mornings. Not nice at weekday lunch. lots of hassle from cars, lorries, taxis desperate to get past me, even if red light directly ahead.

I got there, but it was not a nice cycle at all.

Very sensible.

There are still people who do their first 'ride to work' about 8:30 on a Monday morning!

Of course you won't get any real idea of the 'rush' hour traffic, but if you can memorise the route it's one less thing to worry about.

You'll get a pretty good idea of how long it'll take.

Get there safely and 'speed up' later.

Certainly better than underestimating the journey time and panicking about being late (and hot and sweaty - and too late to have a shower if you were planning to).

@giantbikes87, I did that route the other day, assuming I know where Telford college is. North edinburgh path to Tesco at canon mills ten up vis new EBC to top of broughton st then pushed it round John Lewis then down caltonroad and right up east market st. I then took the side entrance into Waverley court where all the hundred bikes are parked. An irrelevance if that is not your destination. Enjoy the commute, it is a good one.

It's not possible at the moment to have a route that avoids traffic entirely, nor avoids right turns entirely, but you might try using the North Edinburgh Path Network to get to Scotland Street, and then a bit of jiggery pokery to get across to Princes St to make the right turn into Waverley Bridge.

http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=519341

The main alternative is going around to the south to approach East Market Street from the west. You could try the Dalry Road cut-through to the West Approach Road, which lets you get almost* traffic-free to the Meadows, and then an easy run along George IV Bridge and drop down to Market Street.

http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=519349

* Gilmore Place/Tarvit Street junction can be circumvented by temporarily becoming a pedestrian, since the green man immediately follows the red light on Gilmore Place.

Johnston terrace is okay, since it's only buses, taxis and bikes in that direction. it's supposed to be closed next month though.

but there's at least two routes, you could try which are about 1/2 off-road paths. unfortunately, the centre of town is where none of the innertube routes connect.

In a couple of years there *ought* to be a better route from Russell road to canal and canal to meadows, which might give you an off-road/protected route for everything by George IV (in theory this is part of the QBC, but the paint won't help you much).

Some options here -

http://www.cyclestreets.net/journey/19584607

Partly depends whether you want 'direct' including main roads or might want something longer.

For instance take path all way to Haymarket then various options including via Cowgate.

More circuitous -

http://www.cyclestreets.net/journey/19586007

mmmmm suggestion above was based on a mis-apprehension of your start point (thought it might make sense to be on the russell road path, but perhaps not)

how about the green route here? http://edinburgh.cyclestreets.net/journey/19585961/

hmmmm...the green route here? http://edinburgh.cyclestreets.net/journey/19585295/

although I might be inclined to try Fountainbridge - semple street - bread street - johnstone terrace?

both a bit hilly, but avoiding hills means riding down Lothian road/princes st, which isn't fun.

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post. I have recently moved to the north of Edinburgh and was wondering if anyone can help me find a safe rout to work. It's from the new Telford college on west granton road to market street round the corner from Waverley station. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks
