"Yeah, I was there."

Thanks for your comments.

"I can't have been the only person in the audience who was distinctly underwhelmed. Also they mis-sold the event: it should have been titled "The future of mountain biking"

That's made (slightly) glad I didn't go.

"... just how inadequate the vision in Scotland is at policy level for cycling."

Yes - not least because 'cycling' is transport, sport, leisure, tourism - but in separate boxes/silos.

It doesn't need to be like that.

"Audax riders seem to keep popping up out of the woodwork everywhere I go these days..."

CCE seems to have 'created' a few.

The guy from the Scottish industry body just gave a bog standard PR presentation. Absolute rubbish, if interesting in a depressing way. It showed one facet, from a particular standpoint (mountain biking), of just how inadequate the vision in Scotland is at policy level for cycling.

The guys from Oxford Brookes gave a much more engaging talk, with some real science in it (it's the Science Festival after all, not the Promotion of Mountain Biking Tourism Festival). As you might expect, they had thought about their project, considered issues like carbon footprint, energy use, etc. Some great tales of how they tested their bamboo frames during a MTB race across the Alps...

Seems bamboo is better for endurance riding (eg. MTB XC) because of the vibration damping properties. I suggested to the guys after the event they might try making audax frames next... ;-)

Some nice food laid on afterwards and chatted to another cyclist about audax bikes. Audax riders seem to keep popping up out of the woodwork everywhere I go these days...

A contingent from Spokes was there handing out newsletters, I noticed.
