The world didn't come to an end when they put bollards at the bottom of Meadow Place.

But the process took about ten years.

This isn't going very quickly either -

Yep, just a few well placed bollards stops rat runs, they didnt ban cars, just encouraged active travel by simple and CHEAP means. That last bit must surely appeal to CEC?

I'd love to see Causewayside barricaded off in several places, so that delivery vehicles could get in but it was no longer a through route. Imagine what a lovely sweet place it could be then.

Isn't "all" that is needed quadruple yellow lines and lots of traffic warden activity? People would get the message...

"A ton of tarmac, some bollards, signage and a few crates of beer - reckon CCE could have it done over a weekend? "

@Arellcat I was crossing Cramond Brig on NCN1 at the weekend, from the east, to find a large black SUV parked halfway across the bollards. Plenty of room elsewhere to park, just unthinking and very irritating.

cc - yes, we have debated previously about closing off Argyle Place - but going further would be even better - close off Sciennes Road right along to Livingstone Place.

I would also block off Hatton place and Palmerston Road at Chalmers Crescent which would force cars up to Grange Road and remove rat running.

A ton of tarmac, some bollards, signage and a few crates of beer - reckon CCE could have it done over a weekend?

Yes there are many well-intentioned examples in Edinburgh of how not to do it. Even the bollarded-off Meadows Place gets 2 or 3 wide of cars parked at the bollards, blocking easy access to the South Meadow Walk.

Bollards need to be placed less than a car length from a junction in order to discourage parking on that side, but doesn't prevent parking on the other side!

Argyle Place!
But really every single residential street that's not obviously intended to be a safe through route should be plugged up in this way. We could stop up loads of streets in the Grange and Marchmont and Sciennes for instance and make the place hugely safer to cycle through.

Queen Charlotte St to Water St or just after Maritime Lane, currently hazardous when a car is in a rush to get to The Shore, resulting in speeding past a nursery over cobbles. The bike-only turn from Cables Wynd into Queen Charlotte is also only of limited effectiveness with all the parked cars along the north side of the street.

Roseburn Gardens is one way, but this means it is used by traffic as a cut-through between Russell Road and Murrayfield, to avoid waiting at lights at end of Roseburn Street. There's a nursery, old folks home on the street and a primary school on the next street. There's no reason this street should continue to serve as a convenient rat-run to save people 30 seconds.

One of the things I really liked about the London vision was the promotion of semi-permeable streets. that is, closing streets off to motorised through traffic, but enabling cyclists and pedestrians to pass through easily.

Suggestions for where we could have more of this? and maybe planning some concerted lobbies?
