"The fatality rate is particularly high for older cyclists. The rate is about 12 times higher for the 75 years and older than for 'the average cyclist'. Compared with the fit group of 30 to 49-year-olds, the difference is even larger"
Fatality rate: traffic fatalities per billion kilometres travelled, by age and mode of transport, Netherlands (1999-2003) Source: SWOV/Transport Research Centre, CBS.
(the fatality rate increases with age for pedestrians and motorists but not so much)

Is the age factor down to the key word "fatalities"? I would guess that an incident that might "only" lead to serious injuries in a person of 25 might well lead to the death of someone aged 65. Or at least be more likely to.

"I wonder if age plays a role?"

MAMIL factor? Lots of lapsed or first-time cyclists getting out there ill-prepared or inexperienced, coupled with the fact that to Daily Mail-types "MAMIL" (and "Lycra Lout") are terms to attach to any cyclist just for the challenge of being aggressive towards them, both in print and on the roads.

Just a theory.

I'm not sure I'd put up a map of cycling fatalities on a company notice board.

Surely that would only serve to reinforce the myth that cycling is dangerous & discourage potential cyclists?

I wonder if age plays a role?

Seems to be an awful lot of over 40s in the stats, is it just that more adults over 40 cycle, or does something happen as you get older that makes it more likely you will be involved in an incident?

Fimm - The BBC has had 2 (or more) tries at mapping of all road fatalities in GB: 1999 -2008 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8401344.stm and 1999-2010 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-15975720
On a more local scale http://www.crashmap.co.uk/Search has all reported injury road accidents from 2005-2011 with different severity and some road user class/vehicle selectable.

Steveo - the basic data up to 1985-2011 is available from official sources online or downloadable, the more recent data and personal info would be a lot more work

That is a fantastic data gathering effort the rest is probably quite straight forward.

Wow, he's put a lot of work into collecting that data.

A couple of reactions which are not really on the main topic of what is there:

1) If you think that's bad, what would a map of all motoring fatalities look like? (Didn't the BBC have one at one point?)

2) Given the proportion of fatalities should be in proportion to the proportion of participants, the fact that he's colour coded the flags shows how male-dominated cycling is, or at least has been (yes I'm aware of the well-known London statistics about women and lorries).
