I can't help reading this as some sort of inspection you have to pass (we used to have our lockers inspected for tidiness at school) ... my bike would probably fail having had a hard winter. Must go out and give it a little TLC before the SSPCB have me up for cruelty to bicycles

I aim to get the racer back on the road this weekend, its been literally hung up since I got back from the C2C. Only need to pump up the tyres, replace brake blocks and fit pedals.

Until I discovered winter tyres I would stop cycling in the icy months - but I can just as easily walk to work as cycle, and I'd get someone else to do the bike maintenance anyway...

I treated my Croix to it's annual new chain/cassette/chainring last week. I'd been putting it off until the daffs had come out.

Yes indeed. It's just a bit amusing...

Jan Heine is a randonneur too, so should be the year-round type if any are (audax in the UK takes place 12 months a year, after all, despite our snowbound conditions).

Some places have regular seasons and some people are only 'fair weather' cyclists - and/or have 'better weather' bikes.

The detailed advice will be useful to some.

If you only inspect your bike in spring, aren't you running the risk of being stranded or crashing in winter?

Doesn't really matter the same way in town, but if you're going to get stranded at any time of the year, I reckon spring/summer would be a lot more pleasant than a winter storm...

"

The beginning of the season is a good time to check our bikes carefully. The last thing we need the evening before a ride is to find out that our chainrings are too worn to work with a new chain, or that our bottom bracket is about to pack up. A poorly maintained bike might leave us stranded on the road, or worse, cause us to crash.

"

And a lot more good advice (with pictures) -
