Pah the noise of a turbo could be detected by a decent bike thief a hundred metres away. Beet thing to do is let the shop look after it for you in return you could look after their money.

If you don't want people to know you have a nice bike, your best bet is to lock it in the spare room on a turbo trainer and never take it outside...

Of course knowing your full name it would be fairly trivial to find an individual, ultimately how many DaveC's are likely to be within a few miles of your house.

Much easier just to get decent bikes off the street. I witnessed an expensive mtb being locked up out side decathlon with a chain uberuce would be proud of, except he had locked it around two bits of 5mm hi-ten steel cable. Would have taken moments to cut the cables and worry about the chain later.

"Also on Strava you can set an exclusion zone round your home and place of work"

Also on Flickr.

Remember - you might have good settings but maybe your friends don't ;)

I'm not on Friendface myself, but I probably am by proxy, of which I would have little to no control. I could always be a hermit, I suppose.

we're shortly going to have a garage full of bling.

Methinks you should talk to she of the red hair and SEEKRIT BUNKER.

It sounds like the bike was kept by the front door and may have been a target of opportunity rather than stolen to order using Strava?

I've always wondered how that would work anyway. You'd need to have encyclopaedic knowledge of old and new bike models and their value and then somehow search by model on social networking.

Wouldn't it be easier to drive around on a weekend morning just before club run time and see which garage doors are open with bling inside?

The latter is more of a concern to me, since we're shortly going to have a garage full of bling. There are so many options for anchors, door protectors of various sorts... the list goes on, and you somehow need to strike a balance between the loss you'd take on an insurance claim and the costs of ever greater security...

Unfortunately my online life is heavily linked to my "how I get paid" life so most of it is fairly obvious - however I'm fine with that. I could find out lots of things about most people if I really really wanted to (please note I don't tend to do this and nor will I rise to a challenge) . Remember - you might have good settings but maybe your friends don't ;)
I keep facebook fairly locked down though.

As to the comments I like the "who needs a 3k bike apart from olympians one"
Who needs a car that can do 140 Mph apart from racing drivers?

Yep, keeping 'online' and 'real' life separate is useful I find.
I know at least 4 folk between here and twitter in 'real' life through work who don't know who Baldcyclist is. Only a a select few get to know who I am, Facebook is me, and I only keep a very small number of 'friends' on there.
Keeping mapmyride private so only I can see it helps too.

Yes, you can set an exclusion zone in Strava. And just never let slip in social media that you're off on holiday as a rule.

I have generic names for my bikes on Strava. I do know others who have named their bikes the manufacturers names. Also on Strava you can set an exclusion zone round your home and place of work. I know its not linked to Strava in the article but all the same.
