It may be me (and I've only just restarted commuting after a holiday) but aren't there a lot of potholes opening up now?

I've mainly been going along Gilmerton Road and the potholes are appearing exactly where you'd expect them - where there were poor repairs, bus compression dips etc. But some are massive. And the weather/light isn't conducive for stopping and doing a Fill that Hole report.

I’m sure on one level ‘we’ are all bored (or even terrified) about all this.

I doubt if there are any ‘deniers’ on here, but maybe some people more (or less) optimistic than ’the average’ due to ‘hope’ or actual understanding/knowledge.

It’s fascinating/depressing that (most) governments (and the BBC) are (at last) fairly sure ‘it’s real’ and ‘something must be done’ and there’s no need to ‘balance’ science with scepticism anymore.

The UKGov/Boris seem scandalously complacent about only setting targets and relying on the market and individuals to deal with it all.

It’s understandable that people don’t want to be worse off and even more so that those who feel/are ‘poor’ want/expect more.

As ‘we’ know, even getting people to imagine that fewer cars/less traffic might actually be better for most (not just in a climate context) is hard/impossible.

For the Govs (inc SG), more/bigger cars isn’t a problem - as long as they are electric - and, maybe, people use them less - say 20%…

Covid changed everything, for a short while, but then ‘back to normal’ as fast as possible. Some changes in work patterns - the possibilities of, and now desire for, WFH (for some) plus realisations that ‘I don’t want to do that job anymore - at least not for THAT money’.

What’s to be done/what can be expected?

Can’t see me getting rid of the gas boiler any time soon. A completely free heat pump installation might change that, IF it was actually as useful/convenient/reliable.

(Recent talk of the possibility of hydrogen instead of fossil gas - any chance of that?)

But ‘better answers’ would be district heating - no sign of that being compulsory, even for new housing developments (or ban on flood plains or MUCH better insulation standards).

Not ready to give up milk/cheese, partly because the vegetable ‘milks’ are not great.

Meanwhile UKGov seems content to damage UKFarming with misguided expectations of cheaper food from elsewhere - have they seen the increase in shipping costs?

As always, energy - its provision and cost - is a big issue.

Not much emphasis on reducing demand.

More concern about the stability of fossil fuel supply than accelerating the “transition” to renewables.

Nuclear is firmly back on the agenda (not forgetting that even people like George Monbiot think it’s necessary). Even ignoring the radioactive waste problem, (industry says ‘not a problem, gets turned into glass and buried’), is the cost of nuclear electricity ‘value for money’?

I don’t really expect to be alive in 2050, but I certainly hope the lives of my grandchildren are generally pleasant and secure.

Before then I want there to be an obvious trajectory towards the elimination of the danger of ‘runaway climate change’.

Meanwhile I don’t want to be cold or hungry.

More importantly I want that to be the case for others - plus good health and wellbeing.

Rational changes in energy and food production plus adequate housing might be good places to expect improvement.

More trees (probably) good, not convinced artificial/industrial carbon capture likely/possible and potentially dangerous to rely on the development of such technologies.

Where are we with tidal, large scale battery storage and other ‘maybes’?

chdot on "2026 SP/Holyrood election (and prospects for PoP)"

OK this is really a holding page as there’s so much fallout from yesterday’s election to live through before anything becomes clear!

I was surprised to find there isn’t an actual date beyond ‘a Thursday in May’.

I think a 2026 Pedal on Parliament is VITAL.

There was no 2024 PoP because not enough people came forward to organise one.

For ‘26 there are ‘new’ people keen to make it happen.

Key people from past PoPs are willing to pass on their knowledge/expertise and some may offer actual help in a much more limited way than previously.

This is most encouraging.

It is COMPLETELY understandable that people who have put in a LOT of (volunteer) work are unwilling to do it again.

PoP did ‘shift the dial’.

Attitudes did change - sometimes grudgingly.

PoP started before “Climate” was much of a thing, “Emergency” was Fire/.Police/Ambulance.

‘Traffic calming’ was, mostly, not particularly controversial.

‘15 Minute Cities’ almost unheard of.

It’s not (just) about cycling.

It’s about people, cities, towns, neighbourhoods, countryside, mobility, less car ‘normality’, etc

So, save the date (when it emerges), turn up at The Meadows for a joyful ride to Holyrood.

Think about being involved in the organisation - on the day or in advance.

chdot on "THE NEPN thread"

Obviously the NEPN (North Edinburgh Path Network to those new to Edinburgh or unwilling to go north of Princes St…) is a key part of Edinburgh’s ‘cycle infrastructure’.

It accounts for a significant part of the ‘off-road mileage’ and is largely the result of accidents of history - significant amounts of railway lines built in the relatively flatter and more industrialised parts of Edinburgh, followed by the rise of road transport, line closures and subsequent calls by Spokes, the Cockburn (and others) for conversion to a walk/cycle ‘network’.

The bulk of the NEPN was developed and tarmaced under Lothian Regional Council. Phil Noble was a key officer. He has since worked on all sorts of Active Travel plans and projects in Edinburgh. His job has included dealing with the unhappy traders of Roseburn, calmly.

The next significant development will happen when the Powderhall to Meadowbank section becomes an important new ‘active travel corridor’.

Meanwhile there remain ‘issues’ - particularly maintenance and access.

As ever with CEC ‘responsibility’ is spread across different departments and teams.

I was reminded of this yesterday by

A local Cllr tweeted @edinhelp who passed it on to CEC’s “Forestry team” (they are particularly efficient so I presume the tree has been removed).

Unusually there hadn’t been high winds to blow this down, but there was significant rainfall the day before. Once again it demonstrated that there are trees without sufficient roots in various parts of the (former) railway cuttings.

As ever, there is the issue of ‘balance’ between ‘public safety’ and ‘amenity’ - plus ‘resources’.

A previous NEPN thread.

This has been discussed on various threads through many years.

Previous proposals dissipated due to lack of money - which also halted the extension to Newhaven for quite a while.

Now it’s all back again as a proposal and the issues remain whether or not to go down the Roseburn Corridor or to go via the Western General Hospital.

Obviously neither is still a strong possibility as CEC has no money and whatever money SG has, it may choose to keep spending on roads or on non-transport things.

Apologies if there's a thread for this already - I couldn't find it in search.

First proper map I've seen from the council on the Greenbank to Meadows Quiet route. Looks promising - utilises several modal filters. Looks like Blackford Safer Routes gets a shout out too - good work Also!

(via https://drscottarthur.scot/2020/09/01/braid-road-briefing-a-full-re-opening-of-braid-road-is-not-proposed-at-this-stage/ )

Greenbank to Meadows Quiet Route
The Greenbank to Meadows Quiet Route is the second half of the proposed route from Frogston Road to the city centre. It will run along quiet roads parallel to Morningside Road.

In order to implement this proposed route road closures would be introduced at various locations to remove through traffic.

At its southern end the route runs along Hermitage Avenue between Braid Road and Hermitage Gardens. With Braid Road closed this link is lightly trafficked, however, were Braid Road opened this might require further intervention to ensure it was safe.

The proposed Greenbank to Meadows QR has been designed so as to cut out rat-running traffic from streets between Cluny Gardens and Comiston Road with strategic closures shown in the map overleaf (below). This would include diagonal closures at the junctions of Braid Road & Braid Crescent, and the junction of Cluny Drive & Hermitage Gardens, as well as a modal filter on Braid Avenue. With Braid Road closed, these further interventions would effectively eliminate traffic cutting through residential streets between Cluny Gardens and Comiston Road.

As part of Greenbank to Meadows QR It is also proposed to introduce two closures on Whitehouse Loan. One immediately south of Strathearn Road, the other immediately south of Bruntsfield Crescent. These closures will enable safe cycling on Whitehouse Loan and reflect proposals which have been put forward by local community group ‘Blackford Safer Streets’.

Wilmington's Cow on "Is dualling the A9 really that bad?"

I've been thinking a bit about this recently, seeing some of the arguments for and against, and it's really not a black and white issue.

I should say that I think the cost of it could be spent much much better elsewhere. But. We put ghost bikes up because 9 cyclists have died on Scotland's roads so far this year - in 2010 on the A9 I think 13 motorists and motorcyclists died. Now is it 'possible' that dual carriageway all the way would actually have prevented many of those deaths?

It's suggested that speed plays a factor in the deaths, but more likely, is inappropriate overtaking. Clearly targeting this poor driving so that it doesn't happen would be the most cost effective action, but practically how can it be done? (yes, enforcement, but how do you catch the people doing it in the first place without having police cars every 5 miles?) Whereas, if there is dual carriageway... There's no overtaking that involves crossing to the other side of the road. That's a simple fact. Yes, people might go faster, but you've removed one potential cause of conflict immediately.

It's kind of like us asking for segregated facilities, it's removing a potential source of conflict, so dual carriageways do that for single carriageways. Certainly at present the little sections of dual carriageway 'encourage' people to get past before it ends the number of ridiculous overtakes I've suffered while driving that road is legion) and yes yes yes yes I do agree that stamping out bad behaviour is much more preferable to having to spend loads of cash on infrastructure. But again, as a simple statement, would dual carriageway all the way lead to fewer deaths? And if the answer is yes, does that make dualling the road a good thing? I guess what value is a life?

I have heard as well that money should be spent on the rail link instead, which I'd agree with, thoguh for some different reasons - it's been suggested that dualling will lead to small towns being bypassed, but they already are for the most part anyway, and people still drive in, and if the final destination is Inverness (or further, I'm usually going to Ullapool) then on the train they'll sit till that destination, whereas driving they may (should) want to take a break and will therefore stop in one of these small towns.

I guess one benefit would be if more freight could be carried on a better rail network so there are fewer lorries on the road.

This is all a bit rambling. Really in short I think that dualling will save lives; that if we could change behaviour that would be better (certainly in the long run as it will be reflected elsewhere than just on the A9); that's it's costing a ridiculous amount of money; and that many people both pro and anti get a little blinded to the shades of grey.

Erm.

Discuss.

This could have gone in the "tram latest" thread but that would be the wrong place - in spite of the headline!

chdot on "Trees - good or bad?"

OK bit of a loaded question - can't be too many people on here who don't like trees.

There's another one down on the Roseburn Path.

Some time ago Sustrans advocated a serious bit of felling/pruning there - partly because of the 'autumn leaf problem'.

One reason that trees fall over is that they have become 'too big' for their root system which is having to deal with the (artificial) embankment (cutting).

It may well be a good idea to have some selective felling of big trees and 'rationalisation' of smaller ones trying to fight their way to the top of the canopy.

Obviously decisions should be made taking into account individual trees/species/locations - rather than a 'clear fell and start again' policy.

Fortunately that is likely to be too expensive, given CEC's resources for what they now seem to be calling Natural Heritage.

I'm sure 'we' value this mini woodland more than we curse the leaf sludge every year.

Of course a bit of extra cleanup would help - new Tarmac and some drainage suggest that CEC might be beginning to take more care of its off-road network. What next, proper gritting??

In March 2018, the Council acquired the former gas works in Granton Waterfront which substantially increased its landholdings within this priority regeneration area.

This acquisition provides an opportunity for the Council to take the lead in the regeneration and ensure a place making approach is widely adopted across the area. This will create an inclusive and sustainable approach to development, and accelerate delivery of new homes, school, medical centre, retail, services, creative and business space and enhanced public realm to provide a vibrant, well connected new city quarter. It has the potential to become one of the best places in Edinburgh to live, learn, work and visit over the next 10 - 15 years.

15/00193/FUL - care home/flats on Balcarres st.

This proposal is highlighted on spokes planning page. it proposes to build flats plus care home on land currently occupied by council recycling depot.

When the Royal Ed redevelopment project came up, there was talk of a footbridge across the south sub at that point to allow pedestrian - and possible cycle - access to the grounds. In fact, the planning committee made the NHS looking into this option a condition of their Phase 2 application.Could be handy for staff and residents. At present south edin js really cut off by the south sub.

Argyle House in Castle Terrace meets the criteria for being designated a building “of special architectural or historic interest”, according to Scottish Government agency Historic Environment Scotland (HES).

But it looks unlikely to be granted protection from proposed demolition because HES does not list buildings where a development proposal is already being advanced.

I suspect I know the answer having dug through a few companies' lists of rolling stock, but are there *any* services from Edinburgh to Newcastle that don't use those garbage little 2 bike closets where you have to stand your bike on its back wheel and just hope the train doesn't shoogle too much?

I'm not even sure my big honkin' ebike would fit, nevermind the potential for damage. It'd be nice to do the sustainable thing and use train & ferry to get myself to Europe, but it's been a right faff and not a small amount of money getting my bike just how I want it so leaving it behind and renting a "good enough" at the destination would sour the whole thing.
