I took a quick look over my pal's bike at work yesterday and found her front brake was disconnected, which I duly fixed and told her. She said it'd been like that for two weeks and had mentioned it at the time. I have no memory of this conversation, which is no guarantee it didn't happen, but I really can't see myself letting a broken front brake go unattended.

I was more than a little gobsmacked that she'd not been badgering me every minute of the day until I fixed it, only to have this madness topped by another colleague who told me she'd be riding down to Stockbridge with a friend who was running every red light, and when she finally caught up with her down a side street and asked why she was riding like such a nutter, was told casually 'oh, my brakes don't really work'

Why the 19th of May? Well that's Scottish Cup Final day (between Hearts and Hibs), and despite the campaign to move the match to Murrayfield there's virtually no chance of that happening. So the Edinburgh streets might be a bit quieter than normal. I'm pondering a 50 odd mile route entirely within the confines of the city (been thinking about a 'Roond Aboot Reekie' audax along these lines for next season) if anyone fancies joining me.

Just read this one: "Which bustling streets are these then, last time I looked at Princes Street, it resembled a ghost town."

I've just been down that way, in the pouring rain, and it was pretty busy even then.

anth on "Driving Licence Re-Testing"

I was thinking, in a random way (yes, yes, as I usually do) about how long I'd had my driving licence for. I passed at 17, so next year will see me clocking up two decades with the ability to simply jump in a car and drive.

Now that's fine, apart from the first 4-5 years of having the licence, when coming from a poor family meant I couldn't be bought a motor by mummy and daddy, nor afford one myself, and so I only drove every now and then... Since then I've not really had any big breaks in driving, and I think I'm fairly competent. But it does still strike me as odd that you can get your licence and that's it... Off you go, until you're a geriatric, or do something really wrong that means you've got to go to driver training school.

I vaguely remember hearing that in the States there is regular re-testing. I'm not so naive as to think a lot of drivers simply wouldn't adjust their driving back to the requirement to pass, then go back to bad habits, but for some it might iron out things, especially if there was a chance you'd have to go back to a provisional, or if you could have insurance tied into a number of resits that were required to re-apss or whatever.

Is there really a legitimate reason (I'm thinking administrative and financial burden may figure heavily) for not re-testing every 10 years or so? Personally I'd happily submit - I'm fairly sure the frothers on the EEN would think otherwise.

"

LABOUR

We will set up a city-wide Transport Forum of experts and citizens to think through our modern transport needs. It’s a complex challenge.

We’ll pay attention to the everyday things..

• bringing roads and pavements to a good standard especially in busy areas
• controlling the work standards of the utilities who dig up our roads
• extending 20mph limits to all residential and shopping areas
• encouraging more walking and more cycling by spending a minimum of 5% of our transport budget on them and increasing that share year by year.

SCOTTISH NATIONAL PARTY

• The SNP will continue to support the current allocation of 5% of the transport budget to cycling and will look to increase that level whenever we can.
• We will continue to develop safer routes for cyclists to increase the 7.5% of journeys to work being made by bicycle throughout the city and help to prevent serious injuries or fatalities amongst cyclists.
• We support innovative ideas such as bicycle leasing and schemes such as the Quality Bike Corridor between King’s Buildings and the city centre and the “Family Network” cycle route between Leith Links and Portobello promenade. We also recognise the need for greater connectivity between existing cycle routes.
• We will roll out a programme of cycling training for schoolchildren to help make them safer on our roads, funding it from the 5% transport budget allocation for cycling. This will be complemented by a programme to raise driver awareness of cyclists.
• Road safety will continue to be a priority and we will consult on extending 20mph zones to protect all road users, especially the most vulnerable: children, pedestrians and cyclists.
• We will continue to support the appointment of School Travel Coordinators and strive to reduce congestion around school gates. We also aim to provide “Safer Routes” to schools, tram stops and railway stations for children and other pedestrians.

On the curve of would-have-been-bypass past Brist square. I say facilities, I mean red asphelt. At least its red all the way through but its otherwise thourghly depressing, no curb, bout a meter wide and half that where the drains are.

I personally think uncurbed onroad cycle lanes actually encourage bad passing as they give a false illusion of segregation. Also a truly segregated lane would have none of the wear problems associated with heavy traffic, I.e. less dodging round potholes.

Here's another poser while we are at it, if you are approaching forest road junction (Doctors) from laureston place and you wish to turn onto MMW, how are you supposed to do it?

Heh this question is going to make me sound like such a noob but how hard is it to replace the brake pads on a set of v brakes? Would it take a long time? Just my back brake has started making some 'entertaining' noises and I think it might be that I've worn the brake pad out. They haven't been changed since I got the bike and I've noticed recently that they aren't stopping me as effectively as they were.

Figure for England.

“Swimming is the only subject on the national curriculum that can save your life,” said David Sparkes, chief executive of the ASA."

Again England - don't know if in Scottish Curriculum.

It could perhaps be also argued for cycle training.

Man on radio just said that drowning is third largest cause of accidental death.

Though of course "Road accidents are the biggest single cause of death for all children between the ages of 1 and 15 years" - not just (or probably many) while cycling.

Good afternoon all,

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Paul and I work within the Road Policing Branch of Lothian & Borders Police. I have been part of the working group looking at improving cycle safety in the city of Edinburgh over the last 18 months or so. I have approached my line managers and asked if I can register on here to offer advice on cyling and other road safety issues that may be current just now.

I cycle in Edinburgh on a daily basis, commuting to my place of work at Fettes. I own 3 bikes, and want another one. I watch cycling on the telly, and I go cycling with my kids. I am married and also own a dog.

Professionally, I have been in the police for 11 years, 7 of which have been with the Road Policing Branch. I am currently attached to the patrol section of the branch and am trained to advanced level in Vehicle Accident Investigation. I am and advanced police driver and also hold a full motorcycle licence.

The purpose of me becoming a member on here is to assist with any queries you may have. I can not take reports of incidents, or give advice on any ongoing enquiry. I can not give my personal opinion, however I will endeavour to be as frank and honest as I can.

If you do wish to report an incident, you can use this link http://lbpcmsstaging/Internet/contact_us.aspx

I am fairly new to forums, this being my first foray so to speak, so please be gentle with me to start.

So if anyone has any questions??

Gah. It's not like it's a hugely busy roundabout or on a major route or anything.

Well, October drew to a close with 5 days of 21 involving moisture cycling to work in at least one direction.

As I got soaked riding in this morning (should have had a lie in - it's fine now!), I thought I'd stick up a post to record the fact, and edit it as November goes by to keep track.

An alternative to football and anth's ride -

"

This Saturday (19th May) a big day of sports action starts at Redbraes Park in Leith as Cycle Speedway Celtic Cup action returns to the capital for 2012. Tapes up at 12 noon.

As Edinburgh's big two football teams compete for the Scottish Cup in Glasgow, back in Edinburgh the Ireland, Scotland and WalePs Cycle Speedway teams will take to the track for a one off three team tournament to be staged over a 27 heat format.

Wales, who are the current holders of the Alistair G Kennedy trophy, will again start as favourites.

Scotland Team Manager Gav Kennedy has been robbed of the services of a couple of home Edinburgh stars but has reminded everyone this leaves open the door for others to stake a claim for a more permanent role.

Ireland have also named an understrength team but still have a wealth of experience to call upon and have several riders who race the Redbraes track as if it were their own. Ireland Team Manager Gary Colby will be hoping his team can stay competitive right until the end.

As for Wales, they have decided to remain quietly confident and will not be naming their team until match day. Does this hide selection problems for Wales Manager Nicky Evans? We will no doubt find out on Saturday.

There has been several days of constant rain in the Edinburgh area over the last few days which is giving the track staff some extra work. However, everyone will be hoping for Sunshine on Leith come Saturday afternoon.

"Globally, road crashes are the number one killer of young people aged 10-24."

News release
Zenani Campaign
For immediate release: 17 May 2012

Didier Drogba onside for Zenani Mandela Campaign

Chelsea FC and Ivory Coast star striker Didier Drogba has today (17) given his support to the Zenani Campaign to save children’s lives on the roads worldwide.

Pledging support for the Zenani Campaign, Drogba said he wanted to help the family in their call to improve road safety for children particularly in developing countries. The Ivory Coast national team captain said he had seen the problem first-hand in Africa, where more children aged 5-14 are killed on the roads than from diseases such as HIV/AIDS or Malaria. Taking time out from a hectic schedule ahead of the UEFA Champions League Final, Drogba took part in a photo-shoot for the campaign.

Didier Drogba said: “I support the Zenani Campaign because far too many children are being killed on the roads. This is a very important campaign. We need action now to save lives.”

Drogba is a close friend of the Mandela family, meeting Nelson Mandela, the family and his great-granddaughter Zenani, when he was in South Africa in 2009. He has been in regular contact with the family since. The campaign is a ‘Mandela Day’ initiative in honour of Nelson Mandela’s birthday and is part of the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety.

It has been led by Zenani’s mother and grandmother, Zoleka and Zindzi Mandela and has been established by the Road Safety Fund and the Make Roads Safe campaign.

The global campaign calls for a range of measures to protect children including: investment in safe footpaths, cycle-ways and crossings on streets with lower speed limits particularly near schools; proper enforced legislation for child seats and seatbelts around the world, and tougher action to prevent drink driving and speeding; and better helmet protection for children in countries where motorcycles are the main mode of transport.

Members of the public around the world are being encouraged wear the Zenani wristband and to join the call for improved protection to save children’s lives on the roads worldwide. Globally, road crashes are the number one killer of young people aged 10-24.

A range of high profile figures have backed the Zenani Campaign since it was launched at the beginning of May 2012. They include supermodel Naomi Campbell, sprinter Asafa Powell and members of the Jamaican Olympic team, F1 stars Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The Zenani Campaign was launched in New York at the beginning of May 2012 by Zindzi and Zoleka Mandela and Mayor Michael Bloomberg at an event for the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety hosted by the Road Safety Fund.

The Road Safety Fund has been created as the new global fund for road safety to support the implementation of the United Nations' Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020. Funds are directed from a range of donors – companies, governments, philanthropies and the public – to support road injury prevention programmes in countries and communities working to defeat this growing epidemic of road death and injury.
The Make Roads Safe campaign has been calling for action by the international community to stop the daily tragedy of thousands of preventable deaths and injuries on the world’s roads.

Bumped into a chap I knew from the Sheep Heid the other day (he would occasionally work behind the bar before the refurb). He had LEJOG planned with his wife, but came home with a broken arm and a dislocated shoulder.

He'd got his bike serviced at EBC before going, and said it came back worse than it had gone in (I'm not going to act surprised) but it was too late to do anything about it. There was a rattlnig coming from the bike that, as they rode from Penzance to Land's End to begin the ride he diagnosed as the rack having been replaced with the legs 'inside' the frame at the back, and one of the bolts not actually tightened at all. Sorted, fine, that annoying rattle is gone.

Riding away from Land's End a new rattle appeared as he was riding downhill. What he did next was very very silly. He reckons in a stressed state (sounds like a lot was going on in his life at the time, and the poor service of the bike had added to his annoyance) he simply didn't think, and perceiving the noise to be coming from his front mudguard he bent down to check, whereupon his hand... Caught in his spokes... Locked the front wheel as his arm halted the wheels progress against the forks... And pitched him overboard.

The dislocated shoulder actually went undiagnosed down south, and it was only a few days later at ERI that they pointed out that it was a very serious injury, and he's now held together by nuts and bolts.

They're attempting the ride again in late summer. He's done some bike maintenance courses since getting back up and about.

If you've come across tech talk about 'gameification' the idea of Strava will be familiar. I makes individual cycling into a competitive game as you compare your times on segments - let's say Arthur's Seat - with other people.

I suppose it's a bit like doing hilly Tuesday without everyone being there. So, for instance, since I can't make hilly Tuesday, I could compare my time going up Arthurs Seat and discover that not only am I much slower than wingpig, I'm slower than everyone else.
