Happy New Year everyone. In the belief that if I state my goals here, I'm slightly more likely to achieve them, here are my stats and other targets for the year...

    10000km
    100000m of ascent
    12 Strava Gran Fondos
    12 Strava Climbing challenges.
    Complete Forth and Tay
Cycle over the Queensferry Crossing, preferably as part of a ride over every bridge over the Forth.
    Do a new HC climb
Find a new route to work.
Persuade someone else to take up cycle commuting.
    Do more night cycling.
    Enjoy every ride.

What does everyone else want to do?

"Persuade someone else to take up cycle commuting"

Hope you won't be the only one!

Might be good to get some new stuff on here sometime -

My only goal is to get the whole family to ride at least 2 miles together.

This could be quite a challenge, as one is on a balance bike, the other is too scared to ride at the mo, and one has no bike...

If I say now that I'm thinking of riding to Ride to the Sun before doing Ride to the Sun, does that mean I have to do it?

I was going to do this last year and abjectly failed, but I have a plan to try one 'adventure' a month - defining an adventure as a ride somewhere new or a new route - basically anything involving getting the OS maps out

@sallyhinch, that sounds like a great plan. Flexible enough to be spontaneous should the need arise.

I'm planning to art riding audaxes again after a long hiatus, but I'll try not to be too rigid in setting goals for the number, distances or times. Otherwise I'll just end up disappointed.

Want to do some proper cycle touring again too this year if I can manage.

Wittling down my collection of bikes, upgrading and/or replacing certain ones is also on the to do list.

Mine are the same as 2016...

    300 days on a bike
    My longest ever ride
A century ride every calendar month
    5,000 miles overall
And a little less time cycle campaigning.

I am tempted by LEL2017 but that would be a big ask...

is there a PoP 2017 date? Will it clash again with Tour de Lauder as about this time last year I entered Tour de Lauder, paid the money then remembered it was on same day as PoP. Crazy.

There is a date, the application is with the council, and we're waiting until we get approval before we announce it (because if we do have to change it, it's a real pain in the neck if another date has already got out into the wild). However, there was basically only one weekend in April that made sense once you'd removed Easter, school holidays etc.

@Bc would it help to take bike on train and cycle from different stations further from Edinburgh each day/week until fitness/warm weather returns?

Awesome! Oddly enough I bumped into this thread last night and had a pleasant few minutes of reminiscence.

Too late for 2017, but maybe one to pencil in for 2018...

Writing down your goals is a positive step to achieving them, particularly if they are concrete... but telling other people can be a negative step because the brain isn't so great at separating the joy of "congratulated for achieving my goal" from the joy of "congratulated for stating my goal". You create a "social reality" which puts you off the urgency of creating the "reality reality".

This is my understanding of the performance psychology relating to goal setting.

If you want to tell someone, you should tell someone who will keep you accountable. If you want to cycle to work 5 days a week, tell whoever you live with rather than your mates at the pub.

I plan to ride my first century this year. I've not decided if it will be an event of just a leisure ride yet.

I also plan to teach someone to ride their first 100m. They don't know it yet but being 3.5 and competent on a balance bike means they won't have much choice when the time is right.

I have some triathlon-shaped goals, but no cycling ones, really.

My name is IWRATS and this year I have the goal of writing something about bicycling and getting it published somewhere. Que je trépasse si je faiblis!

My goals are well underway with a big offroady thing oop north yesterday.

    - Get distance fit again.
    - Get faster climbing
    - Get the ole diesel legs back
    - Remove worrying paunch
    - Ride a 100 miler each month
    - Have more adventures
    - Ride somewhere sunny and warm

Think that'll do for now. I considered LEL again but just can't see how I'll have the time to build up to it.

Well, @sallyhinch, I am currently inciting a group (including Madame IWRATS) to attempt Phil McKane's Glentrool Tour - not too far from Bigtown - over two days. Light mountain biking with two kilometres of machete-wielding bog portage to close the loop. Overnight B&B in Newton Stewart. Should I put you on the group e-mail? Early May maybe?

@IWRATS I think I'll stick to tarmac, but I'd be delighted to see you all before or afterwards if you're coming down Bigtown way

  26. 1. Get back on the bike after almost 2 months off it.
    (1.5 Re-toughen my backside!)
    2. Regain my confidence to ride when it's likely to be a little icy (lost that a few years ago after one too many offs over two winters)
    3. Lose the weight I didn't shift in 2016 (probably the hardest thing on this list!)
    4. Just enjoy riding. No big challenges or sportives - any element of competitiveness spoils the enjoyment for me.

Commercial for UA on twitter. Quite good in my (biased) view.

UA's greenwash is a lot better than VW. (I hear that sales of diesel cars are at record levels).
