If I'm waiting at a junction is it bad etiquette for a fellow cyclist to pull in front of me? Personally, I wouldn't go ahead of someone who was already in the 'lead' spot. Happened twice last night and both times the perp's actions and subsequent slow move off forced me to go too slowly for comfort in the traffic. I challenged, quite politely, the second time as I overtook him and was thanked for my opinion with a hand gesture indicating he wasn't in agreement. Just wondering if I am 'over-sensitive'?!

Yes, very bad etiquette. It happens from a minority. Not worth angsting over. No puppies died.

Well if someone looks slow for example an upright bike or bike with panniers or no cycle clothes, overweight , don't look very young, then someone may assume they are slow so go in front, personally I don’t mind people going in front as don’t go that fast.

Plum wearing lime green jacket, red rucksack, going up Blackford Ave about 9am this morning. He decided to overtake the slower cyclists in front of him without checking his shoulder or indicating, causing the driver already doing this to have to brake/evade and I'm sure gave them (the driver!) a real fright.

@Rulou - Once could be forgiven, not sure about twice.
@Ed1 - True, to an extent, but those assumptions would often be wrong. Electric bikes make them even less likely to be true than they used to be.

This morning, two people turned east out of Haymarket Yards and into the westbound taxi rank that has been set up while the eastbound lane is shut. The taxi entering the rank to come across two bikes heading straight for him was quite rightly a bit annoyed....

And @Ed1, interesting if stereotypical description of 'slowie' identification; I tick some of those boxes (not telling you which), but I am not a slowie nor would I make that assumption about anyone else.Posted 6 years ago # -
I would profile as slow and are slow.
I suppose it’s far from an exact science profiling the cyclist in front

This may yet end up in the rubbish driving thread. Old friend who lives in NZ now came off his bike on his way home from work. Badly broken arm (going into surgery shortly), broken thumb, concussion, cuts and bruises. No memory of event due to concussion - so possibly was hit by a car. But no idea if any witnesses or how long he was unconscious in the road before someone called an ambulance. He's at least been up to posting pictures on Facebook of the aftermath so he's dealing ok, but yikes.

very. if they think they're hotter stuff than you, they can place themselves a bit to the right to be ready to overtake.
but once in front, they'd danged well better make an effort to stay well in front.

Not sure if this should be in a 'creative' cycling thread or 'rubbish'...
Parent cycling child to bruntsfield primary (so far so good), who i have now twice seen on Westhall Gardens with child standing on the back carrier rack, holding on to his shoulders.
Is it just me that thinks this is bonkers? I just hope the kid hops off before they cross Viewforth. or maybe they cross on the zebra?
The first time I saw them it was one of the icy days and I warned them that the other end of Westhalll was very slippery...

I think the kid thought ducking for bridges was part of the fun...

Standard procedure in the ultra-safe Netherlands.
Probably illegal as carting anyone on a rack even if sitting is illegal, I believe.

An Uber Eats cyclist that I see regularly (distinctive ebike thing, maybe an aftermarket conversion? looks pretty homemade anyway) who always runs red lights, did so and nearly hit a pedestrian. Pedestrian stopped and cyclist veered towards her. I was too far away to tell if she gave him a good telling but he's a proper idiot anyway.

More like rubbish humaning from the feral youth pulling a wheelie on the wrong side of the road in Nicolson Street outside the Italian Institute. As the oncoming bus pushed him back into the proper lane he was nearly squished between the bus and the car behind. Turning back to express his displeasure with the car driver beeping him, he collided with the car in front and came off the bike. As the cars were stopped at the red light he moved the bike to the pavement and then confronted the driver of the car that beeped at him, opening the door and shouting profanities, soon assisted by a gang of his friends. As the green came on and the car was about to drive off he kicked the door one last time and proceeded to evaluate the damage to his (?) velocipede.

If all cyclists had a gang of mates to back them up as they opened car doors and shouted profanities we'd get a bit more respect don't you think? No more Mr Nice Guy and all that.

@dougal/@algo - is it a chunky bike, MTB stye, big tyres? There's an Uber Eats rider I see often around Porty, Seafeild and Leith on a e-bike which I suspect is de-restricted as fair screams along on it. Was mentioned at !PY this morning.

Always wears a buff pulled up over his mouth and one under his helmet? If so, seen him in Newington and N Bridge area. Never seen him turn the pedals...

Bloke on a (very dirty) single speed with a sagging rusty chain overtook me on the ramp to Balgreen tram stop this morning. No warning and he was very close. If I wasn't in the process of shoulder checking (to over take a cyclist in front of me) we'd have both been down.
Really poor awareness on his part.
Mind you, if he doesn't start looking after that bike he may not be a cyclist for much longer

Person I had been overtaken by on towpath then whom I overtook at the Scottish and Newcastle mud (their tyres were too skinn for the mud) then overtook me so that they could be directly behind the car waiting for lights to allow right turn at kings theatre.
This person then pulled a really stupid stunt. They overtook the car as the oncoming traffic came out of tarvit street. Person driving car from tarvit street who had right of way was incandescent.
Maybe 9 o'clock lecture to give but still better to be alive.

just in general, the number of cyclists who sit on the left hand side of a left turn-only lane, but then join the traffic going straight. I've had two near collisions this week, because i was going straight and then planning to pull off the road on the left to park up--but cyclist i'd thought was long gone is right behind me!
luckily, i shoulder check. i'm going to start ranting soon.
