The down side to the cones with ropes on Leith Street was also demonstrated yesterday evening, as an elderly-ish guy had gone into the cycle lane at Princes Street (presumably, he was halfway along when I passed), and was "trapped" as cyclists came at full speed down the hill behind him, pinging their bells and shouting at him.

Much the same as with the metal guard rails then.

    Yesterday's Rubbish Cycling.

Lastnight I rode home. Same route as usual with an easterly, along the prom and up to Cramond Brig. From here I follow the A90 cycle path. It is a nice wide well surfaced path, apart from on section where it narrows, pinched between the old road's wall and the back of some new Armco barrier. Then it widens nicely where the path is flat level and smooth.

At this pinch point on the A90, where they filled in the trench, cyclist approaching the hill and sudden narrowing, usually step aside and wait for those barrelling down the long pinch point of the funnel. Well as I was descending the funnel towards the pinch point, a cyclist did just that, but the lady behind swung past him and filled the Gap I was heading for.

I was fortunate the Armco had finished as I diverted onto the grass verge round her and then back onto the path. Not the most elegant path departure and I don't think she heard my expletive, but when I looked back they had both stopped...

In fairness, if Steve Cardownie was on at me while on a bike, I'd either ask him about Jim Orr's allegations, or flip him the bird. Probably both.

Ah, another anti-cyclist piece from the local rag. Best summarised as "I saw one cyclist going through a red light, so I felt compelled to write an article about it, unlike the many drivers I see breaking the law every day"

Steve seems to have a regular EEN column these days. Must be hard to think of things to write about??

    @gembo

especially when there are likely many things he would not like written about

Not completely anti-cyclist, but who bothers reading stuff like this to the end? (Me) 'Sadly it would appear this was not an isolated incident as I have heard similar tales all too often but responsible cyclists are paying the price.'

@Murun Buchstansang, he appears to be aiming at a narrow area trying to avoid party poilitics, sort of local issues an ex-councillor of no party now might focus on? Dog dirt, festival flyers, litter, weeds are a few more ideas for him

ah, yes, I confess the second of those pieces is the only one I have ever read, so I should have filed under - still party politics rather than avoiding party politics. Still must be hard for him to think about what to write?

if you are planning to accelerate while making a left hand turn, don't be surprised when the pedestrians already half way across freeze and you have to do a bit of fancy steering.

mind reading is hard, and i had no idea that cyclist was planning to go behind me--he was clearly irritated that we froze, which means he was planning to cut it extremely fine and be just inches behind us. his facial expression was expressive.

Approaching the WoL viaduct on the Roseburn from the north. Pedestrian walking south on my side and a cyclist approaching on the other side, which I initially consider passable. I check behind, to find a captain of turnips rapidly approaching, so I stop accelerating and brake to the pedestrian's speed. Turnip whooshes through. Turnip gets shouted at as soon as I'm away from the pedestrian's ears, as he weaves through the cloud of pedestrians and cyclists and fluoro-tabarded path-construction-folk at the other side of the viaduct, then does the same to the people going up and down the Roseburn zigzag, apparently considering a rapidly-pinged bell a sufficient substitute for manners or consideration. He was disappearing up the back-of-Lidl slope by the time I got to Dalry Road.

    Dear Buckstone-bound cyclist,

Please to be checking over your shoulder before you let fly with your snot rocket.

    Yours,
    Disgruntled Midlothian-bound torpedo rider.

The sunglasses courier, wearing a Delivering box, doing their usual various illegal things around the west end but almost getting a pedestrian yesterday lunchtime.

Not really cycling, but me and 4yo standing at a lights this morning very narrowly escaped being taken out by a gent doing a very expansive leg sweep as part of a graceful get-off-and-on-to-turn-left-on-red routine.

If someone is road-confident and obstinate enough to play chicken with a car on the gravelly-rutted bit of Holyrood Park road heading down towards the roundabout (where the inner lane technically has priority, according to the arrows on the road, but where I wouldn't take any chances; they won by a metre, but by the sound of their tyres came extremely close to slipping) then they're probably confident enough to go on the road round to Duke's Walk, rather than obstinately sticking to the cycle path all the way round when it was quite clearly full of people who don't know it's a cycle track, whooshing past at least forty people without slowing, when the road was so clear I wasn't overtaken until I was beyond the end of the cycle track by the swan pond.

Yesterday, heading away from the WoL on St Mark's Path, I slowed to ask to be excused by two men, one of whom asked the time as I passed, so I slowed more to check my watch and tell them, discovering that someone who wasn't behind me on the WoL had appeared directly behind me. They were still directly behind me at the first pinch point on Mcdonald Road, so I slowed right down, pulled to the left and stared at them, but then still had to tell them to go past several seconds later when they failed to get the point.

Tonight coming west along the madness of the Cowgate at festival time, two lads pulling wheelies behind a big silver bus. The bus was not being badly driven but I doubt the driver had ever tried to take it through cowgate at festival before, he was very ginger. I did eventually push in front of him.

I had overtaken the wheely boys too but at pinch point in grassmarket they decided to overtake me and wheely up the non-existent space between bus and kerb. They are still alive, or they were at 18.15pm but only just.

this morning, coming down Calton Road behind waverley--there's a single lane because of works and i wait because the light is red.

dude behind me sees the red, cycles down anyway in middle of lane. drivers who have the green light to come up hill kindly don't take their right of way.

i said 'smart' very loudly as he charged off, and the pedestrian walking by me laughed and nodded.

3 teenagers in Corstorphine Monday evening cycling along the pavement heading west then stupidly cycling across Tempeland Rd without looking before carrying back on the pavement.

The first 2 were bad enough but I almost crashed into the 3rd on my bike even though I was already braking to give way.

    possibly me.
i was going in to the roundabout between leith walk and leith street, and at the last second realised the car coming towards me was coming towards me--not the exit. i can't work out if he had his indicator on early so i thought he was going to queen st, or if i just fell asleep.

luckily he saw me, and didn't lay on the abuse.

For possibly the first time ever, I felt the need to tell another cyclist that they'd passed me too closely. They didn't seem to take this on board, as they did exactly the same thing to another cyclist a couple of minutes later.

@frenchy did you say Please do not pass me so closely or did you say Please do not pass me or anyone else so closely?

I believe my actual words were "Bit mair space please".

Quite possible that they didn't hear me.

The guy on the line green Cannondale who sped over the crossing at Balgreen and right in front of someone walking with a stick. As the next to pass by I got the full array of swearing and "****ing cyclists".

Also, the guy on West Coates who decided to clear his nose without checking behind him first. The cyclist directly behind nearly got a face full.
