Roseburn to Leith consultation begins (and the debate continues!) CCWEL

The current roadworks and closure of Roseburn St mean that there are no traffic lights at the junction, so east-west traffic doesn't have to stop. Presumably some of the locals are enjoying the benefit of the FREEFLOWING TRAFFIC they have always desired.

I've really enjoyed this closure. I now have a safe right turn into Russell Road. It was always a bit fraught before. Can it be made permanent?

Yes please! Cycled from the ice rink with child (as we do every week during school term) and the rat-runner-free Roseburn Place and much emptier Russell Road were delightful.

Another business opening up on Haymarket Terrace. The prospect of the bike lane hasn't scared them off.

According to the Murrayfield Community Council minutes, updated plans for should be published "in August" to allow time for objections - any sign of them?
Also, Cllr Douglas said that the the TRO process will take 18 months. So realistically we are talking late 2019 before this is complete and work might actually begin. Five years after the project was first raised.

Sorry for not updating, my bad...
Murrayfield Community Council (of which I am a member) saw the detailed (draft) plans last month in preparation for the TRO process starting.
We were able to feed in comments but on the whole the designs as sent to us didn't change much as a result of this feedback.
This is mainly due to the amount of thought having been put into the designs. We were given good reasons why the design shouldn't change although in some cases the answer was because "that's what's was agreed pre Christmas"
The only concern from a cycling point of view is how the interaction between pedestrians & cyclists on the Northside of West Coates and vehicles exiting Donaldson 's School through the listed gates. The Council are away to give that more thought.
We weren't allowed to share the plans are they are continuing to fine tune them.
The official TRO process will start shortly although we won't hear much publically. The consultation on the TRO is likely to be this winter and the council will give due notice, running drop in sessions etc and a letter drop.
That's when things will get interesting again...

I've never quite understood why there's an extensive consultation process and then a TRO. I can understand for small things like yellow lines the TRO might be the first time the plans are published and objections might be reasonable, but surely after a consultation process it's a bit redundant? Do the plans change significantly at the TRO stage? Or is the consultation process simply a non-statutory bit of fluff at the start in a (vain) attempt to avert objections at the TRO phase?

I got the CCWEL 3 email as well: they say "We are endeavouring to send regular project updates to all interested parties and stakeholders as this project continues to progress. Previously these updates have been sent to a small group of local stakeholders, however we have recently updated our systems, to allow us to send updates to everyone who responded to this consultation including their email address." so I expect quite a lot of people on here will have got it...

“Rejuvenating Roseburn”
The proposed designs include significant changes to the Public Realm around Murrayfield Place and the Old Coltbridge in Roseburn. In line with the Roseburn Action Plan we are working with the local Community to develop designs for this area.
We attended the last meeting of Murrayfield
Community Council (MCC) on Tuesday 10 October and heard what people liked and didn’t like about the space, as well taking on ideas, which included
suggestions such as more greenery, more places to sit, bike racks and improvements to lighting.Then last week we spent three days engaging with local children from Roseburn Primary School: Primary 1s, Primary 5s and Primary 7s. Local children had lots of amazing suggestions, including hire bike stations, drinking water fountains and fairy lights in the trees. They also stressed the importance of greenery and the natural environment,and raised concerns regarding the level of traffic and pollution.
Public Consultation – Tuesday 7 November, 8am-4pm
But that’s not where it ends! We’ll be out on site from 8am to 4pm next Tuesday, to hear from the local community, and take on more ideas for this space.

Scotland is undergoing a resurgence. The recent announcement from the Scottish Government to double investment in walking and cycling to £80m per annum from 2018/19, equivalent to £15 per head, is especially welcome and is an example for the rest of the UK. In Edinburgh the city council has kept its promise of dedicating 10% of its transport budget to cycling. This investment has meant Leith Walk’s segregated cycle lane is almost finished, significant parts of the city have recently become 20mph zones and more plans are in the pipeline, including the Roseburn to Leith segregated cycle path. Edinburgh is now in a good position to continue momentum over the next few years.
