Had to drive last night, ended up followed one of the mini-tractors usually used to salt pavements and paths, it was gritting Redford Rd main carriageway instead.

I was therefore delighted on the bike this morning to find Bruntfield Links & MMW had apparently received precisely zero salt last night...

Started cycling but gave up due to the amount of black ice and pushed the bike home.

Took the bus in to work

The bit of new tarmac just before the Red Bridge heading north was an ice rink again this morning most of the rest of the ride in was fine.

Starting to think I'll need to take the mtb regardless of the forecast.

Variable temps on way to work. Unusually, M'burgh was a degree lower than Dalkeith, with ice on some windscreens and the odd bit of grass frost. Also twinkly pavements near the Innocent in Duddingston. Temperature was 4 degrees higher at the end than at the lowest point.

The new tarmac on the Roseburn-Leith path is horrendous. An absolute magnet for ice.

Very strange weather this week. Freezing cold and sliding on puddles on Christmas Eve/Day and then riding in shorts today. This can't be normal.

@acsimpson, high pressure sucking the hot air all the way from the Azores?

Cold snap now forecast end of January.

My feeling is properly cold winter kicks in February these days and really still just Autumn until the new year?

Not had the heating on much recently The southern relatives about to arrive will still think it is cold. So I am looking out thinnest t shirts as heating will be on all day and night. They are bringing Eddie their little terrier. I am hoping to propose the sitooterie for its cage. Not too cold at moment though milk and bevvy is out there as fridge is full. This is unlikely to succeed.

My daughter is over from Australia so our heating has been on full blast despite the mild weather!

Gembo has a very nice sitooterie. I remember eating chocolates there once.

The temperature is so agreeably mild that my wooden stair handrail has gone from freezing cold to merely chilled.

Thanks @arellcat, it has been pimped up slightly with addition of row of church hall seats that flip up and indeed then fold away, should the space be needed for a big dog basket/cage.

The nature of folding church seats also necessitated the purchase of double Length cushions as normal length cushions fell down the gaps.

and the penny drops... Was that you this morning @gembo, in tow with the dog? If I had clocked, then I would have given a more elaborate wave than the vanilla one I reserve for fellow, but unknown, dog owners

Also @moose there was a river between us. Nice oh gave your coffee out with you though.

On our bigger wAlk later - green cleuch out Shute cleuch back, several people failed to compute we had a dog. He belongs to the relatives but I have walked him many Times and he is fairly obedient. I hold him when the mountain bikers are near

Walked over to Salisbury Crags last night to see the torch procession. Calculated clothing for a brisk walk was not equal to clothing required to stand still on a hill at night in December so packed big coat in my rucksack and walked in two fleeces and a wind-cheater.

Was too warm at all times. We have turned the weather against us. It is not normal to be warm at night on a Scottish hill at the turn of the year.

Hogmanay joke, not in cracker but printed on end of restaurant Bill

Quelle est la difference entre un sapin de Noel et un cure? (What is the difference between an Xmas tree and a priest?)

Aucune , dans les deux cas les boules c'est pour decorer!

(In each case the balls are just for decoration?)

Well I may not have translated that so well, but you get the jist.

Surprised no-one reporting on a wild ride this morning!
Christmas trees were moving across the street in Shandon when I was leaving. My head felt quite windy when I realised I forgot my helmet, so went back up to grab it. Starting from Ratho it was very blowy (front and side). I arrived 5 min late for work.

Yeah, it was scorchio and blowy this morning. Glad I was on the spare (mountain) bike when riding into the headwind.

It was pretty tough coming in from the east. I was mildly annoyed by an ebike making it look easy.

The scariest I've had on the bridge for a while. Doesn't help that we are on the West Side at the minute and totally exposed to the wind.

  25. Had a lovely push in this morning, it was amazing! Not looking forward to the return much though.

I normally go down Gilmerton Road rather than Kirk Brae when it's windy, but forgot this morning. I won't forget again.

I spotted 20 mph wind on the MET app as I was getting up this morning, but made the mistake of not scrolling down to the specific 'wind forecast' to see that this was to be accompanied by gusts of over 40 mph. There was no obvious weather warning. The conditions would have easily made it into the top ten of windy days that I experienced in 2018. I jealously noticed that the only other person that I saw cycling west on the towpath this morning was on an eBike.

I passed a few pelotons on the towpath on their way west about 8:30. Plus a few people who looked like their "new year - new you" cycling resolutions were getting off to a shonkey start. Good on em though!

RScot says FB shut to bikes.

Can’t see anything on Twitter - FB a/cs don’t seem to be useful anymore.
