    “For it to almost close it would have to be 50C for two weeks,” said the bridge’s co-designer William Matthews. “We have designed for extreme temperatures.”

    From that link:
    "Torrential rainwater over the last week wrecked 19th-century birth, marriage, and death documents, with former employees now revealing the extent of the damage."

    "A former employee, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told the Scotsman, "vast amount of records from 1986 were completely destroyed, irreparably warped with water and countless entries reduced to just puddles of ink."

    Beyond the complete destruction of journalists' knowledge of which century 1986 was in, the article raises in my mind the question whether this is why there is often a requirement that people use black or blue ballpoint pen on documents. Biro is more water-resistant, isn't it?

    Just heard that the Audax I'm doing next Sunday (Riding the Ghost) may have to reroute due to a landslide on the N side of Loch Katrine. The road may be fixed in time, but there is a reserve route in place.

    It would be a shame as it's lovely going around the loch. Just like the TdF though.

    Hope the new route is not 59km...

    Have ridden the loch before and it is a cracking trip.

    Does seem much wet

    I might try swimming to work

    The old wait to see if it goes off strategy not working so well at the end if the week as it did at beginning

    I failed to avoid the rain on the way home - it was very wet in Balerno. However not only did the rain stop before I got home, the ground there was still dry, i.e. it had not rained there at all...

    I was in a 26 bus on York Place during the thunder storm on Wednesday. It was like being in a car wash. People closed all the windows so that they steamed up and for the rest of the journey it was difficult to see where we were.

    Aw @chdot... That was nearly a month without a Severe Weather Warning. I suppose this warning isn't imminent so doesn't really spoil the run of good weather :-)

    My Altura jacket is no longer even pretending to be waterproof.

    And the temporary Picardy Hellscape doesn't even have pretend drainage.

    Good to know, @gembo. You don't think I should go through another cycle of re-proofing it 'just to see'?

    It is at least five years old. Goretex really only good for two.

    So sad. But Madame IWRATS will shred and knit it.

    I got a brand new Goretex jacket off eBay (£30!) a few months ago. I really enjoy how dry/almost dry my shirt stays. I also give a little nod to the nearby Gore building when I go past it.

    Almost dry is my ambition. What is the brand name of your almost satisfactory garment?

    @IWARST it's a genuine \GoreTeX Bike Wear jacket. But I have to keep up my commute, so I can keep fitting in it as it's a size Small (that's what was available for £30)

    i want to buy goretex but is it really breathable or do you end up moist from the inside if you are a Big Sweater like me?

    @gembo Really depends on the temperature... When I used it in summer a few times I ended up with a Sweaty Betty all over. Today it was cool enough that it was OK. I had a short sleeve shirt, didn't push myself too much and it was just right...

    @Bill

    I had a Goretex BikeWare jacket back in the day. In fact I still have it - it is my winter hill running jacket.

    All the stuff I've had off them has been good in fact. So be it.

    @gembo

    I reckon there's tipping point for everyone on a wetness/effort/temperature 3D plot where Goretex gives up and you should just accept getting wet?

    @IWRATS, you also need to factor in Cost of Garment

    EG when Rapha first ventured into waterproofs they had pne that was exceptionally waterproof but not aT ALL breathable which upset people (was 100% nylon, not sure Nylon breathes?)

    Is it only Gore and 7Mesh (which is I think made of Goretex) that does not need proofed?

    Proofing is of course another factor

    Anyone have a view on the old Goretex Shakedry?
