Meadows-Innocent consultation (and subsequent building & use)

    @Dave - I think the initial consultations are comparable, except we're seeing these plans now improved based on the consultation. One might hope that the KB plans will be similarly improved by the consultation!

    I'm hoping that if one of these appear on the ground, and demonstrably work (maybe George Street), that the next will be braver/better and a virtuous cycle begins.

    I may be disappointed...

    Hardly anyone seems to be passing comment on this.

    Could it be that CEC have actually created something that's 'good enough'?

    Or is everyone still asleep after half term hols?

    Had a look at the works on Hope Park Crescent, where they've laid the kerbstones for the sharp turn towards the crossing leading to NMW. It's going to be a really quite sharp turn for tandemistas and trailerers.

    Here's how it's progressing at Rankeillor St. Looks tight and suspect some people (faster cyclists?) will by-pass going east to avoid other oncoming cyclists at turn. This happens quite a bit at other junctions. The corner section can only 'hold' so many bikes anyway. Should it have been 'better' / more direct? Comments were made to even get to this stage so not sure how much it would have been changed. For less experienced users that are used to pavement riding this should work.

    yup. this is who it is designed for.

    It was a big push to get this. the push for commuter-usable cycle infra is going to be bigger and harder. that is why we are riding to Holyrood on Saturday.

    Agree - just changed wording to say 'less experienced'. I'm thinking of mum or dad with a four year old moving along at around 5 or 6 mph. Up till now they would have got off at busier junctions or cycle along the pavement.
    It is a bit of a two tier approach and easy to pick holes but the fact it is happening at all is a good sign.
    Those most able to get out into the road may dismiss these... but a several times a year family picnicker to Portobello might feel that there is some encouragement for them to cycle more.

    I think CEC needs to be much clearer (to the general public) about the purpose/scope of the Family Network.

    It has to be made VERY clear (especially to 'motorists') that 'cyclists' don't have to use the routes/segregated/shared use bits.

    Also agree.

    Best/worst example of this is Holyrood Park. Voted (by many) as one of the most hostile cycling environments.

    We know that once this route is built then if we decide not to use parts of it we will get annoyance from the 'roads are for cars' brigade.
    At least this one actually has a cycleway leading to it - unlike the word crossing at Crosscauseway near the Crags

    The EEN comments section is - again - truly astonishing.

    The amount of obvious trolling (road tax, pavement cycling) would be hilarious, were it not that some people might take it seriously.

    Boyfriend of Fimm took some photos of this today. There are actual proper cycle paths (on the straight bits of the road, of course, I don't know about the junctions). I was quite surprised.

    yes, they are bi-directional, which is why we were so worried about the width in the design.

    they're by no means 'dutch-standard' but a serious improvement on what was there.

  23. Funnily enough I was in Glasgow this weekend, and while it leaves a lot to be desired bike wise, they do have their bike hire scheme up and running, the path along the Clyde looks rather good, and the hotel I was staying on was on a street where this looked like it had been in place a while.

  25. 4 or 5, but I was there midday on a Saturday and it's very business district - may be more weekdays. Has its own lights and everything.
