Actually, I have just discovered I am wrong - 3 hours is the rule in rUK (knew this from a BB holder in NI) but Scotland in its infinite wisdom says "as long as you like".

    Sorry for the misinformation.

From other 'rubbish driving' thread. Whilst it might seem to be 'victimless' the other lane is reduced to a narrow one with just enough space to squeeze a bus down. Although on Sundays these are fewer of course!

One other point is that emergency vehicles can't get through as both bus lanes are parked on and impossible to cross the central reservation.

Will be interested to see if this fills up again next Sunday. Is it a new trend?

Presumably it counts as double parking and is therefore as likely to be stopped as that on Leith Walk.

Valvona and Crolla delivery van parked on the double yellows on York Place, just beyond the Conan Doyle, causing a right traffic foul-up just before the bus stop and single handedly had the Leith Walk - York Place traffic backed up to the Playhouse.

There's a new Christmas tradition in town. Welcome the new generation 'ultra-parkers'. This is not illegal it seems but made an interesting obstacle course for daughter cycling back from Bruntsfield. LRT also love the fact their buses have to squeeze through.

    That's dire.

I think CEC may have dropped the ball, there. As with double parking, I don't think those cars in the central reservation are breaking any laws....? I'm willing to bet that even in rush hour, , since they aren't aligned with a kerb with restrictions, and aren't completely blocking traffic flow, neither the attendants or the police would bat an eyelid.

Double whammy out the window. Parked in the bike lane within the zigzag painted section; and parked on the pavement by reversing perpendicularly onto the kerb.

Christmas shoppers endure six hour wait to get out of Bluewater Shopping Centre

    Torygraph

Not strictly speaking rubbish parking, more Modern Life is Rubbish.

    Still, quite cheered me up.

For a city built around public transport the bluewater does seem to be designed to encourage car use. More Black Tar than Blue water really.

Sounds like there was a bit of rubbish parking going on too.

And here's me thinking the Gyle or Tesco at Corstorphine are best avoided this time of year - unless I am on my bike :)

They should have those number-plate-tracking camera things they have on motorways telling you expected journey times to various junctions on the way into and out of shopping centre car parks.

We're lucky that Fort Kinnaird, Straiton, Hermiston Gait and the Gyle all have partial bicycle escape routes. Even if traffic's standing still on Newcraighall Road the vehicles abandoned/parked up the road make it difficult to filter, particularly if carrying anything bulky.

When I cycled along George IV Bridge today there were no cars in the central reservation, as someone (presumably the council, as they looked official) had put out signs advising drivers not to park there or their cars would be towed. If only they could do that with the cars blocking dropped kerbs*, parked on pavements, or in cycle lanes!

we had a family discussion yesterday about the frustration of people parking in bike lanes (especially by folk from Snax Cafe on Buccleuch St). Agreement was that we all wish we could do a Danny Macaskill and bunny hop all over the cars.

    We can dream right?

  18. On my return to work this morning, I was delighted to see that the grass verges beside the car park for the NHS ISD staff on South Gyle Crescent have been fenced off with a new, thick wooden fence.

For the last year or they've slowly become a free parking space for anyone - with multiple vehicles driving off the road and over the pavements to reach the grass and park in completely random directions. (Early parkers, when there were only two or three rather than 10 or more, are visible on Google Street View: https://goo.gl/maps/Ep7jP71T1bG2)

I expected that within a week or so they'll be driving over nearby pavements to reach any other grassy areas they fancy abandoning their vehicles on, though....

And today a scooterised traffic warden ticketed three cars who regularly park on the double yellows outside the unused gates.

I don't know quite why, but that and those verge parkers really used to tick me off. Was chuffed they are now all being dealt with

    Posted 8 years ago #
  21. @BikeabilityEdinburgh Ticked me off too. Glad that they're finally being dealt with.

Wonder how they'd like people coming round to where they lived and parking cars on their front lawn?

GEORGE Street has retained its crown as the Capital’s most lucrative road for parking fines – despite a year-long trial which saw traffic restricted.

The city council raked in more than £5.3 million in parking penalties across the city over the last year.

It would be useful to know how many penalties were for staying longer than paid for and how many for not even parking in bays provided etc.

"Changeworks" recycling van accomplishing the trilogy of partial pavement parking, across double yellows, on a corner at junction of York Place and North St. Andrew Street this morning.

    Clearly not all things change.

Motor bikes in stairs are (probably) illegal..

    Worth calling Fire service.

I think the Fire Service, if called, would be equally concerned about the locked bicycle with shin level pedal, eye level handlebar and shoulder level overhanging front wheel, all potentially hazardous in a smoke filled stairwell.

@Gresham Flyer - I have to admit that's mine, but I have nowhere else really to put it, unless I just leave it outside. I would say though that that staircase leads out to a subterranean tunnel to a locked door to the shared green. The main door is in the opposite direction.

  30. There's frequently one van or another parked completed on the wide pavement by the bus stop outside 'A Taste of Poland' on Leith Walk.

One there again last night around 4.45pm, but I was on the bus and too slow to get my phone out to take a pic.
