    @IWRATS I think I'll stick to tarmac

How do you make God laugh again? Tell him your plans for the future....?

Halfway there(!) - how's everyone getting on?

I'm on course to achieve/have already achieved the following goals I set in January:

    5000km (currently on 3100)
    Cycle on 300 days (165)
    1000km on the upright (950)
    First (and second) imperial century

I will hopefully also manage a 200km ride (did 195km a few weeks ago)

Not looking like I'll get to cycle across the new Forth bridge, though.

Goal 1 - don't get knocked off - going well.
    Goal 2 - average 100km/week, currently 4,246km this year.

missed the century yesterday by 580m. Got home (Melrose return) @ 160km, thought that would be enough.

160 kilometers = 99.4193908 miles. Have spent most of today annoyed furious at myself.

Hmm. One out of three goals has seen some progress: the witting down of the bike collection.

Audax riding still on hiatus after an abortive attempt on the ToEL in February, weight and health issues.

    Touring: there's still time! :-)

I've managed a micro adventure / new route every month so far this year (although one of them was more like a nano-adventure). It's definitely forced me to try things that were a little out of my comfort zone although the distances have not been anything out of the ordinary.

So far I'm ticking along nicely

    Mine were

    300 days on a bike
    My longest ever ride
A century ride every calendar month
    5,000 miles overall
And a little less time cycle campaigning.

I am tempted by LEL2017 but that would be a big ask...

164 days on a bike, with 3,000+ miles & 7 century rides including a double and very nearly a triple century (my longest ride ever).

LEL is still a possibility for 4 weeks time...

Cycle campaigning continues to absorb spare time and time that isn't really spare. However, I remain optimic that our combined efforts are making a difference so it is hard to stop / turn down opportunities...

It's with mixed feelings that I have to report that I've achieved the only goal I set for myself in 2017. It's nice to have achieved the goal, and it's nice for that goal to be something that most 'normal' people think is completely bonkers and completely impossible (if you're a regular reader of this forum, you're unlikely to think it's bonkers and you'll know it's completely possible).

The trouble is, though, that we're only half way through the year and I am not sure what to do for the rest of the year now that I don't have a long term goal in mind. Worryingly, too, the ideas that are forming are of the 'crazy stunt' variety. In particular, there's a worrying notion developing (prompted by all the people who make comments about bakers when they see the Elephant Bike* with its big basket on the front) to test the practicality of using it to collect some pies from the Apple Pie Bakery.

*Did I tell you I had an Elephant Bike?

@Greenroofer - if you want to go really crazy with the Elephant Bike, you could revisit the"12 steepest streets in Edinburgh" thread.

I have 2 - ride my first century in 25 years and ride 5000 miles.

Did 107 miles at the weekend so goal 1 ticked off. Am 300 miles behind on goal 2. Summer holidays are going to make that a bigger gap!

    Mine are more mundane.

    Rationalise my 'collection'.

    AND

Put them all into excellent working order - new cables etc. where necessary,

"Rationalise" as in "yes, I do have valid reasons for having all these bikes?"

    Close

There are a couple that are realistically 'surplus to requirements'.

(One was bought with someone else in mind, but they don't want it.)

    Then there's the 'other' tandem...

Plus how much do I need/want two F.W. Evans??

    much do I need/want two F.W. Evans

    conservation restoration?

Mmm too many internal dilemmas there.

Perhaps I need to stockpile some genuine 531 decals.

Well done @Iain McR- what is the revised EOY target?

My progress was dented by a broken arm in March

    10000km - 5759, about 320km behind schedule
100000m of ascent (60,031- about on target)
12 Strava Gran Fondos (6/7 done 11 Maximum possible)
12 Strava Climbing challenges. (5/7 done 10 Maximum possible)
Complete Forth and Tay - Yes
Cycle over the Queensferry Crossing, preferably as part of a ride over every bridge over the Forth. Not likely Grrr
Do a new HC climb - Yes Kitzbuehlerhorn
Find a new route to work. - Yes - via Clackmannan, Falkirk Wheel and Canal
Persuade someone else to take up cycle commuting. (Done my bit at the BUG stand at work and answered questions from a several interested Fifers who have started commuting)
Do more night cycling. Done some, but need to do more
Enjoy every ride. yes, apart from the one where I did my arm in...

I am still doing a mini adventure each month, & this month's was my longest ride ever and possibly my soggiest https://cityexile.wordpress.com/2017/08/08/turning-left-in-august/

@sallyhinch - I enjoyed reading your blog. Interesting to see the comments re 10-12mph as I'm probably not far off that pace (don't have a speedo) unless putting some effort in. Imagine a power meter would show me at 0.5, should that be how they work, as folk overtaking appear to be cycling without any effort at all! :) Just trying to get the balance right between effort and enjoyment at the moment.

Friday was my soggiest in a while, had to take my jacket off to limit the flooding going into the Whitshiels cafe in Langholm, got some 'interested' looks - glad they had a canopy outside for my take-away coffee. Did not feel like an equal climb on the fast return to Newcastleton/Hawick.

My goal right now is to complete the Ken Laidlaw middle route next Sunday in six hours: very ambitious for me but really positive to be thinking like that given how I was feeling after a 30 mile run in the Borders just a few weeks ago.

I've had a couple of people comment (online and in person) that they would like to ride in company more but feel too slow to ride in a group - which is a real shame, as those are probably the people who would benefit from the group rides most! This may be one area where women have an advantage because there are lots of group rides for women like the Belles and Breeze groups expressly aimed at beginners (which in itself is another issue ...) so no fear of holding the group up. Maybe someone needs to start a Beaux ride for chaps who otherwise might feel they're holding people up

717 miles so far this year, managed 2 'pleasure' rides in the last 2 weeks. I've got 300 to go to beat last years total, but about 100 behind where I was this time last yaer.

I didn't set a target mileage this year, preferring for the more abstract target of doing some enjoyable rides. This has certainly been going well this year. But perhaps due to the reasonable weather this year, I have passed my usual annual target with 3 months to go :) So a PB is in sights (probably next month).

By the time I cycle home today I will have ticked off my 5,000 mile target and with 272days on the bike so far it looks good to hit 300 before the year is out :-)

LEL answered my longest ride but sadly put pay to my monthly centuries as I've needed to catch up on domestic duties. My 8 rides on my fast bike averaged 240miles though.

Cycle campaigning, hmmm. It seems to be having the desirable impact (in places), so I'll take that as a win too.

I need to average 100 miles per week for the rest of the year if I am to achieve my target mileage for the year. This is annoyingly close to being achievable, but also annoyingly out of reach, given what I know about the weeks when I won't be able to ride a bike at all. Last year @Hankchief and I did an emergency ride on Hogmanay to achieve our respective targets: I don't think that will be sufficient this year.

On the other hand, after a short discussion with Mrs G today, I'm still on track to manage a century+ ride every month for the year.

My 2017 goal was twofold and I can confirm that the first of those folds has been achieved to my grudging satisfaction.

Now, the second part is something that I know absolutely nothing about. I'm pretty sure that without the support of two of the CCE community I might well not have embarked on it, but I am about to. One of those people introduced me to someone I could never otherwise have hoped to interact with. Success is not at all inevitable, but then I've never learned that much much from succeeding.

CCE is not a bicycle forum, or not just a bicycle forum, it is a kind of modern-day enlightenment coffee-house vaguely themed on cycling. Long may it prosper.

@Greenroofer happy to pair up for late December ride. I'm sure we can knock off any remaining miles - it will just be leaving with enough time before curfew to fit them in...
