I guess the east side will reopen once the approach road (which will - surely -incorporate the reinstated cycle path) has been reconstructed. At the moment, even if the E path were open, you could only join it at the north end by climbing a lot of steps.

My guess is that the east side wont reopen before September at the earliest. The final plans involve a toucan crossing on what is currently the main carriageway onto the bridge. The rumours I have heard is that public transport will initially use the new bridge. I assume this is to allow final carriageway changes to be made on the old road, including the toucan crossings. I wouldn't be surprised if they leave cyclists on the west side until almost the very end.
Of course I also wouldn't be surprised if they changed back to the east side before finishing the path.

So I did the commute from the bay to Almost Crewe toll and it was pretty nice despite the driving rain. . GPS said 5 mins to work from where I stopped, so about 55 mins today, with a a few wrong turns .....
I didn't realise you could cycle into the city on such nice routed the only problem I had was the bumps on the bridge and the so-called Cycleway to get to the west side of the Forth Road Bridge...
Was just as @panyagua described it, but just minor points.The only problem now is that the accommodation I have seen so far has not been great, two more to go....

Nice one @rider73. Before the works, it used to be smooth tarmac all the way to east path on the bridge with no inconvenient diversions, and I'm clinging to the hope that we'll be back to that before the dark evenings return.
Good luck with your accommodation viewings - hope they are better than what you've seen so far.

phew. it worked out in the end. the very end!
the final flat was perfect. so just made the deposit!
looks like i'm becoming a Dalgety Bayian! :-)so did someone mention audax's ;-)
ps. on the "commute" i chatted to a guy with a nice classic bianchi- anyone on here?
pps. and someone blew past me just as i reached the Bay (2pm ish)
ppps. quite pleased the entire route was easy tarmac (except the road works) , means i can use a "proper" road bike ;-)pppps. thanks EVERYONE ! this help and advice really has been invaluable! i'll buy you all a beer if i see you !!!!

Good news - We're back on the East side...
Bad news - still loads of traffic cones, even more doors and most concern to me, they are putting some black sand on a lot of the route. This is soft whicxh is tricky when it is deep and when it is wet turns into a really slippy sludge. I now recognise that as the surface which I came off on when I broke my arm in March...

the black sand section is very bad sad infra
its cutting up deeply already, rains will make it treacherous
you have to question the decision-making that sees this as safe / appropriate

I've emailed the project team for the road works/bridge - long shot i know, but i thought why not.
When they did a new bridge up here across to Forres over the Findhorn, they did similar, and I managed to get hold of someone's email address in that team, and they were actually very very helpful and changed quite a few things around to help cyclists!Posted 6 years ago # -
things have improved a bit this afternoon.
they've removed a lot of the sand depth and hard rolled the remainder.
so its quite compact meantime.
the workers couldn't comment on how long this state of affairs might remain in place.

@bax if i was to cycle to the bridge this weekend from Balerno side and cross over the east path, if I then wish to head out towards Limekilns which used to involve an underpass at the bottom of the hill but lately has been more like a recreation of Ypres 1917, how is that bit looking?

its no bother, gembo-san
just head down to ferrytoll, and join the interchange where the underpass used to be
heading in that direction, its quite similar to the old route
but as boris would say, you might have to keep your wits about ye

@Bax this is very useful info Grasshopper. I have something nagging at me that says I cannot go cycling saturday on the smooth tarmac of netherurd so might have a jaunt to Culross but then head back to a place in Edinburgh called Blackhall where I have a brunch invite. Would anyone know if that is an OK area to leave a bike parked? I have heard it is a bit rough?

If you'll be at the top end of Blackhall, then there are bike stands outside Blackhall Library on Hillhouse Rd. You can see them on google streetview.

Works were carried out yesterday to remove the dust and replace it with Type 1 sub base which is crushed rock and therefore more interlocking and stable. We have also removed a gate has also been removed which widens out the access to the footpath.

anyone know if i can leave a car at P&R places overnight (mon-fri for next 2 weeks!) and it be relatively safe? i am staying at pollock halls before i move into Dalgety Bay and want to bring down & drop off stuff like my bike and other stuff that i cannot bring by train but i cannot park at Pollock halls i've been told by them :(
any other parking suggestions welcome, i dont mind paying a bit of money , but the city ones seem expensive! i'm going to try and see about airport parking but its busy this time of year...

There's a map of Edinburgh parking bays which might be useful here: http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/info/20085/parking_spaces/507/parking_bay_locations
It doesn't show privately-enforced residents' parking (such as on East Parkside, and might be missing some other details, so don't take it as gospel. You don't have to go very far south of Pollock to find free parking.
I'd be very surprised if any of the Park & Rides weren't safe to leave cars overnight, but I don't have much personal experience. Longterm/overnight parking will certainly be very common at some of he P&Rs though, particularly those which are handy for the airport.

...so i commuted all last week and enjoyed it, about 45-50mins each way give or take - wind direction dependant ;-)
