The tender deadline was the 30th. Going by the tender documents and adding on the time for the deadline extension, I'd expect the award decision around the 6th of March. In between the two there is "Short listed Bikes required for testing day", so keep your eyes peeled.

I couldn't use oFo because my telephone is too primitive. That said my battery angle grinder is modern so maybe I'll be OK.

I saw half a dozen mixed hire bikes travelling in a group around the Meadows today. I recognised an ofo, and one of the others had a Transport for Edinburgh ad board over the rear wheel. Looks like they're serious about testing them on cobbles because they went down the west side of George Sq as I was passing.

I spotted the very same bike which is an updated version of the boris bike seen in London. Had a chat with the guy riding it up to the top of the hill on MMW (he seemed to be finding it ... ok to ride) who seemed surprised that I'd instantly guessed what they were doing. "Is it the bike-hire-scheme test day?" was my question.
The boris-bike type bike he was riding Looked pretty good but the dimensions looked different from a boris. It had thinner tubing and was confirmed to be a touch lighter. Still looked quite robust, but the wheelbase to me also looked a little tighter. Possibly due to different forks. Tyres were the same marathons. Confirmed to have 3 gears. Glad to see the chap testing it was sans helmet. Good on him.
I also spotted a next bike being ridden by a lycra clad chap with a helm. Looked very commutey.
There are aparently a few electric bikes as part of the mix.

New seat clamp release looks like a good idea. Always frustrating to find a bike with one completed jammed in.

I came across the ofo 'dockless' bike.
Rode along with guy. Think regular cyclists might find them a bit tame - but they aren't aimed at that market. Really a mobile data harvesting operation.Posted 6 years ago # -

Something like Ofo or another dockless system is attractive to me as I live so far outside the city centre that it's unlikely a docking system would ever reach me. Sure there are other challenges with those bikes but there are benefits too.

Sorry to disappoint @ARobComp but even Ofo are geofenced and you get penalty charges riding off-piste.
The Serco offer was anticipated, as at a conference to determine best practice for concession/contracts etc between Councils and Bike schemes their London manager was making such noises.
The Serco/Pashley system is using a Norwegian software/& ancillaries package to offers a product that appears to be addressing the failings of the bastardised Bixi system that TfL decided they wanted (Bixi does not require the same hard-wired bespoke constructed docking stations as those specified by Tfl, which took months to deliver - Bixi regular units are modular, unloaded from the truck, bolted down, solar panel/mains connected and ready to go)
It looks as though the new Serco/Pashley system will use 'UK-first' locking system which sounds remarkably like a version of the system first used in 2001 on Die Bahn's Call-a-Bike, and seen on the current Nextbikes in Stirling and Glasgow, where a combined cable and pin system locks the front wheel, and can loop around any fixed object to park the bike, but can also be used with the docking system. This sorts out a big problem with the London system. When a docking point gets filled with bikes, you need to find another fixed dock to return the bike. Excess bikes can thus be parked next to full stands when a surge flow arises.
What isn't clear yet, are the options for hiring the bikes. Nextbike offers a wide choice, from calling a call centre for the release code, getting an SMS message, using an RFID card, getting a release code from a phone app, or reading a Q/R code from the bike. With a fixed pillar and docking point a further hire option us available. I really do hope that the Edinburgh scheme will integrate as a seamless element of bike hire in cities Scotland-wide from the range of operators now appearing in various locations.
Nextbike contracted The Bike Station in Glasgow and Recyc-a Bike (IIRC) to maintain bikes and regulate the distribution across the stands, but as yet no detail on how the Edinburgh scheme will be maintained and managed, although Serco provides this support for the London bikes, from a depot near Kings Cross.

It’s one reason big cities are keen on bike schemes - cheaper than adding more metro/underground capacity - though London manages to get plenty of money for new lines!
No idea if CEC/LB has done any serious assessment about whether/where there might be some relief on bus useage/overcrowding.

Hopefully our cycle hire scheme will just be the thin end of the wedge.
Detroit (Motor City) have a pilot specialised cycle hire scheme to add to their MoGo system.
