    The size of the Glasgow LEZ looks promisingly large:

    Let's hope Edinburgh's doesn't get watered down to the size of a postage stamp...

    Seasonal too...pollution load in winter potentially much higher when you factor in wood burning stoves.

    "In January, during a period of very high air pollution, [wood burning stoves] contributed half the toxic emissions in some areas of the capital, according to King’s College London research."

    Things which can be done short-term - remove 'performance' sticky car tyres from sale/use, since these wear away much faster. Tyres designed for longevity rather than rally-style grip would presumably help significantly?

    Looks as if, having kicked out commuter cars from our street when the CPZ regime arrived, we'll get some of them back to park just outside the LEZ and walk in to town. Then again it will put a premium on the parking space I can rent out to someone who remains a motoring addict.

    Electric trolley buses with off-grid capability surely could help outwith the main tram routes:

    This one in Italy had diesel backup. Useful for passing obstructions or closed roads.

    Another thought on the (perhaps unforeseen) consequences of a city centre LEZ:

    As long as Scottish Government doesn't provide an exemption in respect of "the relatively low distances travelled within a LEZ for buses, coaches and
    commercial vehicles, compared to distances travelled out-with a LEZ" (which would pretty much undermine the entire thing), then there are going to be an awful lot of vans and wagons restricted from entering the city centre. This should stimulate demand for some last mile delivery services, either smaller electric vans or cargo bikes.

    Council vans are presumably pretty toxic vehicles too, so this could be the ideal opportunity for the council to invest in a fleet of cargo bikes for its city centre parks and maintenance teams...

    Not necessarily

    Car pollution very bad coming down from Liberton this morning. Best approach is to vent the exhaust into the car interior thus incentivising drivers to reduce their own pollution.

    Not a single mention of providing segregated bike lanes or other cycle infra!

    Only:

    A focus on softer tools to promote sustainable travel choices (e.g. sustainable travel plans for businesses

    Edinburgh set for Scotland’s second low emission zone

    “The starting point is for the widest possible area because obviously a big concern is displacement,” he said. “What we don’t want to do is send some of the heaviest, largest and most polluting vehicles driven down some of our smallest, most residential streets.”

    In this year’s budget the Scottish Government have committed £10.8m for LEZ delivery

    So no excuse really.

    Perhaps the pressure should be on SG.

    From the foe statement:

    "The bus industry and the dinosaurs at Government agency Transport Scotland have succeeding in making sure the Glasgow LEZ proposals will fail to achieve clean air by 2020, the Scottish Government’s target date for compliance with safety standards."

    Doubtless old school SMIDGAF grins all round.

    If any of these proposals actually happen they will be most welcome. They're hardly radical, just good practice from countries like Germany and Denmark...

    Not sure why Glasgow started with buses? Lorries in Glasgow are surely the biggest polluters? Lothian buses are slowly changing their fleet. Hopefully Edinburgh will start with lorries.? At some future date? Maybe.

    Given that private motor cars and light good vehicles (vans) make up the vast majority of motor traffic, it would make more sense to start with them. Lorries and buses may produce more pollution (such as particulates, Nox) per vehicles, but there are far fewer of these vehicles on the roads.

    And it’s private cars that hold up all the buses & lorries, concentrating their pollution further.

    How have we got in a situation where it’s socially acceptable for private individuals to poison children, in the 21st Century?

    If you are trying to improve air quality then I'd have thought you'd go at those vehicles producing the greatest mass of pollutants first whatever that is.
