Strava says i've just done my 500th eastbound trip across SRN. On the pavement to get round the barriers.
Parked up was a SW van (with engine running) and a chap inside with a clipboard. Counting cyclists?

Van was still there on my way back but the man was further up SRN looking at some other fencing.

I do wish companies would drop the fake 'elf and safety routine it undermines genuine HS concerns.
I walked down Tylers Acre Rd this morning, some moron moved the cones and drove across the pavement where the lolipop man was taking kids across the road. That has been assessed as safe?
SRN is effectively open, so cars are driving by at head height of the workmen in trenches separated by a wire fence. That has been assessed as safe?

So, have been in touch with the contractors and Scottish Water and we have some good news and some bad news.
Good news:
Progress is much much faster than anticipated (hence them getting to Dovecot Road before Christmas) and they hope to lay the pipe far enough along SRN to allow them to open up the Meadowhouse / Dovecot crossing next week.Bad news:
I've still not convinced them that the risk of a 80kg cyclists crossing at 10mph should hardly register in their list of concerns.They have been having a number of problems with drivers moving cones and mounting pavements to get round the road closures, so they are reluctant to make any amendments that could then be construed as an opening for drivers. Apparently they have had to involve the Police due to repeated incursions into their worksite.
They do recognise that cyclists will use the route and accept the safest way is for us to (dismount &) use the pavement to cross the road. They will maintain a pedestrian crossing at this point throughout the work.
I have to admit, that having it all done by next week was a surprise to me, but just shows how quickly they can work when the set to it. Given the short time period I think it is an acceptable solution.
There is several learnings from this that they have accepted. Probably the biggest is that they need to be considering cycle routes when they plan disruption to our streets.
Amazingly it didn't come up when they went through all the planning with Edinburgh Council. Perhaps we should give a Spokes map to them.

Scottish Water will turn its attention to Kirk Loan after the festive period - with the route set to be close to traffic for 11 weeks.
The £1 million rolling programme will restart on January 8, 2018 before moving along to Clermiston Road.
