Edinburgh Uni works on Middle Meadow Walk

Wasn't this morning. They have filled in and surfaced much of what was open before, but the works have moved down the hill a bit to where the pipes will hang a left into George Sq.

Just to provide closure in this topic, this morning MMW was open again; no holes in the ground or barriers left. Might've been for a while, I've been avoiding MMW due to the works.
What's also disappeared is the paint on the ground next to the link to George Square, indicating right-of-way for pedestrians. Just a few splodges left, maybe they'll repaint it in time for the festival.

@MV ah yes! I think I must have unconsciously combined these two threads. It's good to see the numbers on the bike counter back up again quickly since it reopened. I noticed that the advertising hoarding around the link to George Square seemed to have moved back a little this morning compared to earlier this week - thanks to those who complained about this on Twitter for achieving that.

Update from the University of Edinburgh about works on Middle Meadow Walk
September - November 2018
Dear Councillor,
Further to my previous email of 26 July, the University is continuing work to expand its low carbon energy network from George Square to the Edinburgh Futures Institute (EFI), at the site of the former Edinburgh Royal Infirmary building.
The second and final phase of this work, on the West side of Middle Meadow Walk, is due to start on Monday 17 September. The planned completion date is in mid-November.
Throughout this next and final phase, access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained along the East side of Middle Meadow Walk. Prominent signage will be erected for cyclists, as per the instructions of the City of Edinburgh Council’s Roads Department.
Once the work is completed, both sides of Middle Meadow Walk will be resurfaced and the white lining reinstated as before.
In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch with me directly if you have any further questions. Once again, we appreciate your patience and support.

Also, I believe at some point, the council will be replacing the tactiles with "non slip" ones.

Not sure exactly what they are, but I think they have a kind of textured anti-slip coating.
Whether they'll stand the test of time or not, is another matter.

I remember when the tactiles first went in. Tramlined the front wheel and stepped the rear. Treat them with some caution now.

To be treated the same as any kind of metalwork. i.e Avoid, and if you can't avoid, go over straight & upright.

The "Cyclist Dismount" signs now say something along the lines of "Cyclists slow to walking pace through the works" which seem altogether more satisfactory.

Excellent! I was psyching up for some guerrilla signage "responsible cycling still permitted beyond this point" or similar...

Some of you will have noticed 2 vehicles parked behind barriers on the grass beside MMW today. Uni estates assures me that they are being moved.

Yep, I noticed that.
At least one of the vehicles looked like a family car, complete with child seat. Clearly using the area as free parking and not related to any essential transportation of materials or equipment.

@SRD, I noticed too when the driver of the small metallic grey car arrived. No equipment other than a nice warm hi-viz coat was taken out of the boot.
The driver, having swigged the last of his cup of coffee then casually dropped his cigarette end onto the grass in front of the car. I was minded to stick it to his windscreen with a passive-aggressive note, but in my post-PY excitement to get to work, forgot all about it.
Nice to know UoE is employing such careful and considerate contractors.

The foreman told me that they always wanted the dismount signage and were going to put it in.
Given that they have put in conflict inducing chicanes that were getting narrower by the day ("Cycling by Design", what's that?), I'm not surprised.
But, the foreman also said that the council wanted the "walking pace" signage, so I've complained to CEC that they're deviating from the agreement.

The foreman told me that they always wanted the dismount signage and were going to put it in.
During the last set fo works, the University's estates dept told me that they'd specifically asked the council if they could get rid of the "Dismount" signage, and were told "No."
Odd then that the Uni (or contractor?) is now wanting them back.

Are the signs left unattended overnight or only brought out when there is actual work going on?

They've been in place every time I've passed, regardless of work going on. I suppose the argument is that the route is narrowed regardless of activity.

I have only been cycling up MMW while the works have been ongoing this time and have yet to encounter any problems when travelling around 'walking pace'.
