    Presumably they mean North and South Queensferry?

    The concrete viewing area near the FRB control centre is desperately dull. It reminds me of school playgrounds from about 1980. I was there the other day and I'm not sure that even the public toilets were working.

    Did we realise we were having a "real time experience" when crossing the bridge? Or did some of us think it was virtual reality. What a load of bull.

    I'm not sure I really see the problem here - there's a bit of buzzwordy jargon, but the bridges are a pretty big tourist attraction already are they not? It would be disappointing if the Council neglected to develop that, especially considering the rising pressure on the city centre.

    With the range of sponsored climbs on the FRB, I'd have thought a more concerted tourist effort on taking people up control towers etc, could easily be achieved. Obviously weather dependent.

    @Paddy Irish do you mean the Forth Bridge? I've not seen any on the Road Bridge.

    There was talk at one point of a lift up the Forth Bridge from North Queensferry. Is that still on the cards?

    Personally I think this IS a problem - symptomatic of ways of thinking that aren’t always helpful.

    By 2030 The Forth Bridges area will be recognised as a sustainable, high quality visitor destination, offering great customer service underpinned by an emotionally valued global brand.

    “It would be disappointing if the Council neglected to develop that, especially considering the rising pressure on the city centre.”

    Indeed, though ironically I first saw the quote alongside complaints that Fife was being sidelined!

    The Forth Bridges are much more than a means of travel.

    IAM RoadSmart policy and research director Neil Greig said: “In many ways, these figures are indicative of a failure of Scottish Government transport policy to reduce car use, rather than a specific criticism of the Queensferry Crossing itself.

    ...

    Transport Scotland said the current level of traffic growth might not continue, and the increase from 2014 “is not exceptional in terms of [trunk road] network-wide traffic growth”.

    (That’s all right then!)

    The new bridge is 'so good' that some express buses I've been on have used it.
    Combine this with rail fare increases, disruption and overcrowding then people may be 'encouraged' to use a car if they have one.
    Basically people just do whatever is cheapest and most comfortable. We all know cycling is often faster and 'enjoy' being outdoors.
    Real bus priority should shift some out of cars but once in Fife there is huge dispersal of estates. Living close to a station costs. Then you have to add cost of rail season tickets assuming you are working in capital.

    They were told that the technology installed to control traffic in the bridgehead area is currently in a learning state. It incorporates self-learning signals that monitor the flow of traffic over the approaches. These are in a learning phase until Spring. This technology monitors traffic flow at difference periods of the day and can adjust the traffic lights and gantry information to best suit the traffic conditions. Over time this technology will recognise patterns and should reduce traffic congestion.

    A Transport Scotland spokesman said it had already taken steps to address concerns, including altering the traffic signals on Queensferry junction to help traffic flow and installing “keep clear” boxes on the roundabout.

    ROAD CLOSURE - #QueensferryCrossing is currently closed southbound until further notice. There is no diversion over the Forth Road Bridge. Please use an alternative route. Thank you in advance, for your patience.

    @TheForthBridges

    The Queensferry Crossing is closed southbound until further notice as a safety precaution due to risk of falling ice and snow.

    Diversion - via #A985 onto the Kinkardine Bridge & S/B onto the #M9

    Sorry for the disruption and thank you for your patience.

    For those asking, the Forth Road Bridge is currently unavailable as a diversion route. The southbound carriageway is being resurfaced and the main expansion joints are in the process of being replaced.

    So on infrastructure reliability stakes most to least?

    1. Edinburgh Airport
    2. Queensferry Crossing (on warm days)
    3. Edinburgh Buses inc Airport Bus (maybe should be no. 1)
    4. Railway (when not too wet or snowy)
    5. Edinburgh Tram

    That's why we cycle when possible.

    I do like the reply from the Forth Bridge team to the question "Why don't they just open the old bridge?", which is along the lines of "It is open, you just need to get on a bus".

    @TheForthBridges

    "FRB is a public transport corridor - it will be open for buses and taxis, weather permitting."

    This tweet is causing a lot of anger - public transport is being prioritised on FRB and no room for private transport users. I mean it's ok to say that you may do it but actually doing it...! :-)
    To be fair if they had both sides of FRB available they could maybe do.

    Computer modelling surely would predict this would happen.

    Is there something unusual about weather today... ?

    Cue hostile media coverage

    Well, that is something, since the Qu F has resisted the wind, as promised. A mild winter last winter would not have tested this.

    "A driver has told how a lump of falling ice smashed his windscreen as he travelled home across the Queensferry Crossing in a terrifying incident that has led to the bridge now being shut to motorists."

    @Rosie et al

    Bridge closed tomorrow morning. Thankfully with climate change this sort of problem rarer now (joke).

    On plus side it makes public transport attractive although very crowded already of course.
