...come to an undignified but fortunately upright stop before I career off the road... seems clear enough to me.
A back up light is probably a good plan - what would you do if your main light failed for some reason? That's why I always run two (although my back up one would mean I'd have to limp cautiously as far as the streetlights if I ever had to use it in anger on the unstreetlit bit).

Yes, I did have a couple of those stretchy mini lights as back up for the Brompton's main lights but they got lent to another cyclist in an emergency and I haven't replaced them. I'm so spoiled by my dynamo setup on the main bike and rarely use the Brompton for anything but in-town hops that I haven't put enough thought into getting it decently lit.

The problem isn't 'before' it is that both 'come' and 'career' are in the present indicative tense.
Also that I know @sallyhinch is a very careful user of language and I can be slightly pedantic.

If I might propose an interim plan, presented in user story format:
IF user finds themselves moving at speed with no forward lighting
THEN stop straight away

I had a couple of those but they kept switching themselves on in my bag and going through batteries so were useless as a backup anyway.

Rear brake blocks had worn out so needed replaced. I re-aligned the calipers so ideal opportunity to true the rear wheel as well.
I'm on the stand anyway so why not put the front wheel back into dish after my fourteen year old nephew pointed out it wasn't sitting centrally in the fork this summer.
Turns out a bike with round, flat, taught wheels in line with the frame and braking components is much nicer to ride. Why wasn't I told this months ago?

It’s probably a bit like finding out that ‘traffic modelling’ doesn’t involve peds/bikes and is designed to find out how bad gridlock would be ‘from day 1’ but not a few days later when drivers have learned to deal with it.
AND is ‘not allowed’ (maybe it’s just Edinburgh?) to model for less traffic.
The world is too complicated.

I haven't touched the fork in the three years I've had it other than pumping it up from time to time. Service limit is technically twenty five hours of riding.
CCE - should I crack her open and change the oil and seals?

25 hours is probably based on people cycling off road, right?
Since I assume you've been cycling mainly on roads in Edinburgh, you can probably adjust that time down a bit.

It is assumed that all people read all notes on all threads, hopefully resulting in everyone now checking their saddle rails for signs of imminent snap, wondering if their rims have a wear indicator and where it would be and seeing if their jockey wheels are actually turning underneath all the matted gloop.

Since I assume you've been cycling mainly on roads in Edinburgh, you can probably adjust that time down a bit.
It's had at least a hundred hours of off-road battering and some of Edinburgh's streets are worse than hill tracks.

We could all stand in a circle with our bikes once a month making sharp intake of breath type noises while looking at cotter pins?
You done an ultrasound on that frame? No? OK.
You got a micrometer? Maybe check the rims mate.

@IWRATS I remember standing in a harbour somewhere on the Caledonian Canal and there was a sunken motor boat tied to a pontoon, only it's nose section remained above the water. There were about 3 men stood around with arms folded and big wooly jumpers. As I passed I stopped to glance at the boat and one just said "yep, there is something definitely wrong with that one", "ayeee" intoned the other two.
I imagine that would be a similar situation when we all get together to look at our varied stretched chains etc.

Easy: cotter pins were an invention of the Devil himself designed to make pedals creak with no hope of a cure.
