Yep, despite lot of ifs and buts on this thread the deal that was held over until Ian murraybwon his seat is back on. Sounds like a number of good ideas. Good to see cammy cycling to bike breakfast today and Adam cycled too in his new leader of the council suit. Alison Johnstone cycled into the quadrangle.

    Good news.

Are there expected to be Aberdeen-style repercussions if the SEC vetoed this last night?

Chief Executive, Andrew Kerr, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the new leaders of the City of Edinburgh Council. I look forward to working with them over the next five years to achieve the best for the people of Edinburgh, and to achieve our vision for the Capital as a city of the future.”

@frenchy the same coalition that ran things before but with SNP chairing committees and labour deputy chairing committee. Same as before brief both sides. Quite harmonious regardless of SEC. The big change will be more hassle trying to get work through as Tories will hold things up with objections and scrutiny.

Thank goodness for that. Not before time!

I'm sure the Green group of councillors will support the coalition on issues where it makes sense, and propose amendments or make constructive criticism where they disagree.

Cllr Scott Arthur doesn't seem to be taking this decision well. See his Twitter timeline (@DrScottThinks), in particular his pinned tweet at the top. Wonder if he's already thinking about jumping ship?

@stickman, where would he go? Independent? Ha ha I am making myself laugh. Scott is not a fan of independence I believe.

Are you referring to this Tweet?

Very silly last line. Don't really see how collecting bins, building new schools, or local transport spending has very much to do with a constitutional referendum...

It is very clear that whatever it is, Edinburgh South CLP is not part of the conventional Labour party. There is clearly an electoral pact with the Conservatives in operation. Perhaps at least three of the four people in that picture are considering a spot of ship-jumping when Jeremy turns his eye north?

@IWRATS still can't fathom what ship they would jump to?

I think instead they will learn to love JC for the man with the plan that he is.

    George Kerevan certainly recognises this.

    "the man with the plan"

aka the man fronting a manifesto that seems to have fairly wide support in the Lab Party (even those in the PLP).

As for those who 'hate' him, whether they have any/different/better plan is an open question.

At the moment Scottish Politics seems more concerned about cigarette paper tribalism than anything else.

There has been long standing enmity between (some) Lab and SNP factions, though generally they used to be unified in their differences from the Tories.

    All long past it seems.

Apparently there is only ONE issue in Scotland - Independence.

Apparently there is only ONE issue in Scotland - the possibility of another referendum on Independence.

IF there was IndyRef2 any time soon, it seems likely it would be another No, so it's quite bizarre that the Unionist/No side doesn't want a referendum.

Though calling out the voters, again, soon, might be a mistake...

However this has very little to do with who runs CEC - decided some weeks ago by a relatively high turnout using PR - so for the national committee of a party and some of its local cells to interfere and whinge is really a denial of any notions of democracy.

Lesley MacInnes seems to be a bus passenger on occasion. I've met Karen Doran, she's a good councillor but not sure what her views on transport issues are.

Interestingly both their Twitter feeds feature retweets about the Spokes bike breakfast. Genuine enthusiasm? Or just researching for new job roles?

Hm. We shall have to wait and see how good (or otherwise) these conveners are I suppose.

THE perils of minority administration became obvious at the first city council meeting under the new SNP-Labour coalition when a tied vote ended with senior councillors having to draw lots.

The coalition was proposing the appointment of conveners for four “locality” committees which are due to be set up so some council decisions can be taken closer to communities.

But the Tories, Greens and Lib Dems came together to argue that it was premature to appoint conveners before it was even clear what the committees’ responsibilities would be. They also suggested the committees should be able to choose their own conveners.

    ...

Cllr Day said the coalition would provide strong leadership for the Capital.

Cllr Cook will continue as Tory Transport spokesperson...

"More must be done to rebalance city transport policy in favour of all users, improve the appalling condition of our roads, pavements and the poor quality waste collection services.

We must continue to improve our public spaces with ambition and deliver a quality cycle-hire scheme.”

Oh for goodness' sake, he's *still* harping on about seagulls!

Would you buy a used seagull nest from this man?

I went to school in a fishing town in NE Scotland, I know seagulls can be a problem. I have not once in the time I've lived in Edinburgh thought that seagulls are a problem here. Perhaps in some areas they are, but certainly not city-wide.

    Posted 6 years ago #
  28. The seagulls who insist on doing what sounds like 'Riverdance' whilst wearing lead boots on my roof are a pain.

And then they start having what sounds like a football kick-about with a rock.

Leith seagulls are obviously more obnoxious than their seaside equivalents. I half expect to be robbed by one at knifepoint in the near future!

From him, I read that to mean:

"More must be done to rebalance city transport policy even more in favour of motorists"
