Bloke has nasty accident getting out of his van and tripping over a pothole. A chance to poke at the Council's cycling budget.

It was today revealed that Edinburgh had been named the pothole capital of Britain, based on data that showed the city ranked second highest in the UK in terms of potholes per kilometre.
However, Edinburgh Council's Transport Convener, Lesley Macinnes, has now hit back at claims, describing them as "misleading" and estimating the number of potholes at closer to ten per km.

I think that Lesley is talking absolute rubbish - almost every street that I cycle on has loads of potholes, splits, sunken drains or botched repairs (big tarmac lumps).
Maybe she should cycle some of them as she would surely notice the state of the roads is making cycling more difficult.
Councillor Macinnes is out and about on her bicycle a fair bit.
You can find lots of new tarmac mostly near but not in Edinburgh.
I vote shut all streets to cars and lorries. Fix the potholes but don’t let the vehicles back in (unless under 3 metres in length)
In Mallorca, the second a tiny crack appears it is filled instantly. That is EU for you.
If she does cycle she knows she is talking bs then unless her journey is completely on the rare item of a flat newly tarmac laid road :)

Define pothole? I suppose botched repairs and sunken manhole covers could be excluded.
How closely linked do two defects have to be to become one pothole? Is the surface of the moon look such as at Barnton Shops one pothole or many?
There is a large amount of "arterial" road which is occasionally pothole free. They would reduce the average further still.
Sample sizes and content will also affect the outcome so either figure could be correct.
... However reading more about it I can see that Edinburgh was named the capital because Devon is not a city and London isn't a single authority. The report was also based on an FOI which counts number of reports so if 100 people reported a pothole on Lothian road it may well have been counted multiple times.

In terms of The Size of Wales, a mobile phone is approximately 4.2 ten-millionths of the width (longitudinal) of Wales, with a maximum error of about 1300 mobile phones.
The recent heavy rain will have caused the subterranean washout. There is a large catchment of gutters/roadway on E Claremont St that cascades underground downhill to Powderhall & Water of Leith. In 2000, the sinkhole there was 1 metre square by 3 metres deep!
Patching it up only postpones the problem until the next time.
Mr McVey surely can't be spouting that hogwash about the state of the roads with a straight face. He must use rather well suspended vehicles with very heavily tinted glass if he really believes it.
You'd have to use some carefully selected measurement sites to say that they are better than eight years ago.

These guys should be sent to France to learn how to do it - although i fear many would be instantly guiillotened for their offences against tarmac
I was shocked how many pot holes and crevices have appeared in the last few months in our wonderful bollarded cycle lanes making them dangerous for anyone not on a fully suspended mountain bike
I would suggest the road repair budget be spent exclusively on making all bike lanes completely smooth and leave the rest of the road to disintegrate .
After all , 4 WD drivers of SUVs would surely enjoy the off road experience without having to leave the city
