I'd be more concerned about the grossly excessive width of the overbanding.

I'm pleased to see that the road between Tranent and Macmerry has been resurfaced. The cycle-lane hasn't been repainted (yet).

Fully one year after I first reported it (and who knows how many other people had reported it before me), the horrible lumpy mess at the foot of Kirk Brae has been replaced with nice smooth tar.

Getting councillors (Steve Burgess in this case) involved works, apparently.

The Eskside path between Whitecraigs and Musselburgh is being worked on. Some bits of tarmac have been be replaced. Some of the worst root damage has been skimmed - I hope they'll do those properly soon. When I passed, they were working on several deep channel through the path by the weir - better drainage?

It always strikes me that cycle paths tend to last loads longer than road surfaces. The main threats are bad repairs to eg pipe replacement and tree roots. Sometimes badly laid paths just get worse. Some have a problem with weeds coming through (eg roadside A1 by the nuclear power station), presumably because they were laid too cheaply.

We have lovey new tarmac- >3m wide cycle path all the way between Dalgety Bay and Inverkeithing, parallel to the A921.

This could be all the encouragement needed for kids to cycle from the Bay to Inverkeithing High School as this was the last bit of dodgy path with a narrow path for about 1/2 mile (including a tricky section down to a subway and straight back up again, no longer being required).

  6. After being dotted with paint for over a year, the A8 potholes have been patched up recently. They are actually quite good as far as patches go because they have removed a large area around most of the potholes.

The bit past RBS heading out of town used to be a nightmare as there was barely any clear path through that didn't have your fillings rattling out.

Can anyone update on the planned resurfacing of some of the roads on the SW side of Balerno eg Mansfield Rd up past the animal rescue place and Cockburnhill Rd ? Could you ride a road bike around there now ?

I actively chose to cycle on more of Lothian Road than was necessary the other day to enjoy the new tarmac.

I think the latest resurfacing means probably there's continual decent surface all the way out to the Bypass now on that corridor - or at least to the south end of Morningside?

Where's the worst non-setted surface in the city centre now? North Bridge is still pretty disappointing, I don't understand why it wasn't included in the South Bridge stuff - perhaps they're waiting until they finish the restoration work.

The Mound leaves a lot to be desired, but I imagine nothing will be done until something happens on Meadows to George St in 20-never.

Haddington Pl to London Rd from the limit of the Leith Walk phase 4 is godawful.

@redmist, Mansfield Rd has been resurfaced though lots of loose gravel when I came down it last Thursday. Don't know about Cockburnhill Road.

Lot of spray on asphalt topped with loose chipping on the now repaired Glenbrook road. Will still need some weeks of driving to trammel this down for bikes. Mansfield - has it had same up at Sspca? Need to get up that way and check out the Rigg Race Route. This was done to Johnsburn and it is very average. Even seems quite rough in a car.

New Tarmac which is actually Tarmac out on the Harburn road in west Lothian.

@jonty Fingal Place is pretty terrible - in part because there are great holes in the tarmac revealing the setts beneath.

The road South out of Inveresk, past the hotel, has been resurfaced.

@redmist mr fimm reports the descent from Buteland farm has been resurfaced. He reckons most of the Rigg Race route is good enough now, aport possibly from the very end of the Riig Road itself.

My vote for rubbish surface goes to the Henderson Terrace descent.

    I forgot this thread existed...

A week ago, I went and explored the newish cycle path that runs from Straiton to Millerhill (Here to Here).

It's alright - surface is good, and not many dog walkers, despite it being a sunny warm-ish day. Though it's not particularly scenic, and it feels like you're going through a building site at times. Still, it's a good route avoiding Gilmerton Station Road. Google maps shows the path crossing over the road with no name just before Redcroft Road, but street view matches up with the reality that it's not a path on the other side of the road - though the path alongside the unnamed road is shared use, so you can still cycle up to the roundabout on Millerhill Road.

That line on Google Maps is actually showing the route of the old railway line, they've just not updated it. So routing doesn't work yet, either. Compare with the bit they have updated here: https://www.google.com/maps/@55.8942143,-3.1346971,17.75z

Thanks for the updates on the Balerno roads, I think I'll check it out on my MTB before I risk it on 25mm tyres ;-)
They did a nice job on Harlaw road which for years had been a tooth-loosening nightmare. I was hoping for the same on the other roads.

Harlaw proper resurface. Councillor must have votes up that way.

Found seven miles of perfect new Tarmac today from beyond Muirkirk to the nice wee village of Sorn, not East Ayrshire. The east wind also helped with the hills of which there are many

Heading South on the A9 today, I thought I spotted some new tarmac on the path down the East bank of the Tay heading towards Dunkeld via the hotel.

Twitter seems to have confirmed it...

I went to Wikipedia to discover where exactly Muirkirk is, and this is what it said (now removed):

"The small village known to be, by the residents, a 'shitehole' and a 'dive'. The locals here are known as the 'unfortunates' as they are doomed for the rest of their days and those of the residents lucky enough to escape Muirkirk, the 'jammy bastarts' never return. Those who reside in the surrounding towns and villages avoid Muirkirk like the plague that it is and even go to extreme lengths of sending their beloved friends and family members who visit this small dump to their death. Other modes include torture, the slaughter and to quarantine."

Probably much improved by the new tarmac then.

Mansfield Rd by the animal sanctuary is now fine, both in terms of surface & gravel, for those asking previously.

Noticed today that the footpath by the A702 from Silverburn to Flotterstone has been maintainenced - new tarmac in bits and vegetation/soil trimmed back so it is an OK width again. I have cycled on it previously when the incessant close and dangerous passes have become too much. Mea culpa.

Yes, I noticed that whilst driving that way yesterday. Looked like there's still a section needs a final layer, so not quite finished yet.

I cycled that way a month or so ago and took to the pavement for a bit, but the surface was so poor that I ended up putting up with the poor driving instead.

EDIT: Talking about the A702, to be clear.

@colonies-Chris, just spotted this. Yes that would be an accurate description of Muirkirk. But wiki maybe now features in its former existence when there was work as a Lead town or as it says on the sign at Muirkirk Ane Leid Toon or indeed its covenanting history.

Went through muirkirk today travelling from Ayr to New Lanark. The Glespin road east of muirkirk has finally been finished. Had many traffic lights and a route diversion. It is lovely, unlike Muirkirk

Don’t think this is particularly new (don’t go up Frederick Street very often.)

Is this how other World Heritage sites treat city centre setts?

New tarmac going down on the Cowgate now. Sadly it just seems to be a reinstatement of the status quo.

I assume it's an unplanned job since the other big resurfacing projects on the go/upcoming have decent improvements as part of them.
