I suppose they also think there are too many cars and grumble when they get stuck leaving work.

Indeed. Ah, if only the Gyle/EdinburghPark zone was served by 5 tram stops, 3 railway stations and a plethora of bus routes.

Not overheard as she was talking to me, but I pulled up at lights next to a lady in her late 60s or so on a quite skinny tyred hybrid on my way home. We'd both hopped off and walked through the previous junction when the green man came on so I said hello, and she spontaneously told me how much she was enjoying riding her bike through town - said she'd spent decades sure it would be far too scary and wished she'd just tried it years ago because it was fine. "As long as you have confidence and take up some space!" she said, then headed off on green. I wish I'd had the chance to find out more (and remembered that cycling is, despite everything, so much more fun than driving or sitting on a bus, especially on a glorious winter afternoon like today).

Not so much overheard as overseen:

"I'm thinking of buying one those Mini Coopers, and want to use a tow-bar mounted bike rack. But, I'm afraid that the car is so small that the handling might be affected, by the weight of the bike rack and the bikes. Am I worrying about nothing?"

I suppose if each of the top three best selling vehicles in your country has 4WD, weighs between two and three tonnes, and has space to carry both five people and a tonne of 8×4 sheets, you might think a Mini Cooper was a featherweight.

Saw an original mini goiNG by the house the other day, blue. Now that was a Short Car.

Not 'Overheard' but a tale of the times.

Parked bike and into Tollcross Scotmid for quick purchase.

Scanned milk at self service and just tapping card and guy with headphones comes in on my left.

Picks up phone in cover left on scanner that I hadn't even noticed.

Big smile of relief that it was still there.

"Only realised when my music stopped on Leven St!"

Nice! I once had my phone fall out on donkey lane and it was somewhere in the undergrowth on silent ring ... had to arrange for somebody else to press the "play sound" button on a laptop after a certain delay to let me get back there!

Fear not, the analogue cafe on Lindisfarne where I have just walked to need to instruct staff to whip up the day trippers to leave before the tide comes in. Same as in Cuddy’s day in the 7th century.
