As mentioned on the spotted thread, Irn Bru truck driver followed two cyclists with trailers all the way through Kirkliston without ever trying to overtake, even though he probably could get away with it. Didn't cost him any time either...

As mentioned in the rubbish driving thread, following a close pass from a transit driver:

Textbook pass from the driver of a Murray Moves van, complete with "Cyclists - Stay Awesome" sticker. I believe the owner is of this parish? Thanks!

SB03 OJO or similar, which stuck to 20mph all the way along Lower Granton/Starbank Roads.

Network Rail van which pulled out of Sauchiebank onto Russell Road ahead of me this morning and waited patiently behind two cyclists before turning right onto McLeod St.

Lots of good driving with nice wide slow passes yesterday :-)
(and even when a driver pulled a u-turn in front of me forcing me to jam on the brakes (I did think I was going to hit the car at one point, but didn't) the car behind me did all the honking of horns.)

White pickup man yesterday driving towards me outside Hibs stadium. There was a lorry parked on his side so of course I expected to get driven at rather than given way to. He gave way! Big cheery wave from me.

White van man this morning on Minto Street splashing through the puddles and approaching a side street. There were two women walking on the pavement and I was waiting for him to soak them. Phew, he is slowing down, must be going to turn into the side street. But no, he slowed down so not to splash them.

I do sometimes wonder if there is some sort of man thing whereby some white van and taxi drivers feel they have to show how manly they are to male cyclists but are less inclined to act that way towards women. Therefore I often get considerate behaviour to the extent that I am not entirely sure what the fuss is about.

Though when they are bad, they are VERY bad though. :-(

Bit late, but a few days ago I was riding laps of Arthur's Seat on the road bike. I always take primary on the climb - there's just not enough room for a safe pass of any kind - and then signal and pull into the bays when I get to them. Most drivers seem OK with this approach, and I get friendly waves from more than 50% when I do. On this particular ride, I heard a car approaching and turned round to see a silver Renault - he was stuck behind me for a wee while until I got to the second bay; still, no revving, kept a good distance. I pulled in, he passed, I got a friendly thank you wave and set off behind him. The next rider up the road was just starting the steepest ramp, and was tucked right in to the left - friendly Renault waited behind him, crawling up at the same pace, to the extent that I ended up being delayed behind the Renault. No revving, no tooting, no swearing...

The entire George IV Bridge northbound bus lane and cycle lane was completely clear of illegally parked vehicles this morning.

Only one taxi driver had to spoil it by blocking the box-junction at the top of Victoria Tce/St.

The private hire driver who complimented me on my choice of bike as I locked it on Easter Rd

He was genuinely engaged and positive as to the uprightness - 'nobody'll knock you down on that'!

I’ve tweeted my thanks to the two Lothian bus drivers who behaved perfectly while I toiled up Minto St yesterday. Plenty of space when we stopped at the lights, then a nice bit of holding back, and lovely overtaking. And it wouldn't have cost them more than a few seconds' delay.

Driver of Absolute Roofing van keeping at a very polite distance on the way up Leith Walk. I moved over when I thought it was safe for him to overtake but he thought otherwise and stayed behind a bit longer until the road got properly wide.

Absolutely textbook from the driver of the 31 on Corstorphine Road heading into town this morning.

I was in the front seat of the top deck so could see it all. Lots of cyclists and he held back a good distance from them all and didn't try to overtake when there were bus stops just ahead. When he did finally overtake he went fully into the outside lane and didn't pull back in until he was far past them. A bit further on he waited at a bus stop until they were well clear before pulling out. He also stopped short of the ASL at the red lights.

I've let Lothian Buses know just how good he was. I wish I'd been able to film it as an example to others.

Today on New Street the massive Car Transporter was blocking the road. I was coming down the hill, a taxi stopped near the bottom. Flashed lights and I proceeded. As we passed each other we gave each other the thumbs up.

I cycled back from the CommonWealth pool today - I filtered past some cars turning right onto Dalkeith Road and then did the usual East Preston Street, West Preston Street, Sciennes Place. One of the cars I filtered past was a newish blue VW Scirocco - didn't get the plate. It followed me the whole way without coming vaguely close or any attempt to overtake. I had to overtake a couple of buses which would normally be fraught with tailgating etc... I gave the driver a thumbs up as I went over to Sciennes Place which I hope they saw - really excellent driving making my life so much more pleasant.

Coming up to Ingliston turnoff on A8 cycle path heading Eastbound. Car was waiting to pull out. The driver saw me ready to cross and a long line of traffic coming along the A8 behind me. She reversed to allow me access to the drop curb and gave me a big cheery smile. Really brightened my morning.

I had to cycle along part of the sporadically busy A811 a little west of Stirling on Saturday afternoon and was very impressed with the behaviour of nearly all of the drivers who passed me. I wonder to what extent this is down to the fact that my old hybrid away trip bike now has a rear view mirror protruding to the right? None of the drivers passed while there was close oncoming traffic and most gave me a generously wide berth when they did overtake. The only two close overtakes that I experienced were both from the same driver on a quieter road in between Stirling and the A811.

I was increasingly incredulous that I was being followed at a respectful distance by a driver as I cycled past various parked cars as I headed south on Myreside Road, round the blind corner, up the start of the hill where I pulled into the cycle lane given that I slowed down somewhat, abd even after I turned onto Craighouse Gardens until I eventually pulled over at my destination on Balcarres Street. Turned out that the driver was in a Police car...

Two persons driving white vans followed patiently at a safe distance and then overtook well at different points on my 'long commute' this morning. I gave both a wave to acknowledge the courtesy and got a wave back from one and a flash of the orange flashing lights on the roof of the van from the other.

Funny thing is that level of care isn't even a given these days. (see the other thread)

Yesterday I noticed several different Lothian Bus drivers giving loads of space to cyclists ahead, clearly following the new council campaign advice. Well done.

Lothian Bus 27 on Polwarth Terrace through to King's Junction this morning, kept a respectful distance and refrained from any impatient/needless overtakes. Less impressed by the car who overtook the bus at quite a bit more than 20mph, forcing me to the side of the road.

Short cycle to work today (ie LB shop)
Stayed off MMW as could see frostiness on pavements. Scooted along to Tollcross away from edges.
Lothian bus flashes to let me round on right turn at Kings. A BMW also does same to let me into St Peter's Place. It's not always bad out there though I suspect being lower on road in cold weather invokes sympathy? Dynamo light on though so maybe another factor.

People walking and running on road at Gilmore Place as so icy on pavement.

Woman running along bike lane towards Tollcross to avoid slipping.

Good driving last week in snow. Also a van driver held back most politely. Worth noting

Coming up MMW (low profile) onto the 'island of conflicted priorities' with green bike to merge with traffic on Forrest Rd.
Looking for gap in traffic as the bike lanes is always well used by delivery vans and posties. Most drivers will assume you are breaking the law too as the set up is so odd.

But... lo and behold a transit van stops and actually waves me past. Good considerate driving and could *almost* forgive him for then then going left and parking with other vans on bike lane once I was out the way!

To potentially counteract any stereotype about Audi drivers here's two teaming up to return a soft toy that had fallen from the bike seat on my daughter's bike - the first chased me down and beeped - I wasn't sure why, and then the second turned off to pass over the toy which they obviously picked up when they saw it fall. I'm fairly certain they diverted in order to do so - this is the car that kept its distance actually all the way from the top of Kilgraston to the junction where the soft toy fell off....
