Particularly when a van driver who hasn't seen the sign indicating it's 2 way for cyclists decides to move over and block the road because you're "going the wrong way"

In those situations, just come a halt in the middle of the road, Mexican stand-off stylee. When the outraged comments come out the driver's window, simply quip with an innocent tone of voice "Oh, didn't you see the sign? Cyclists can go this way."Continue stand-off until driver pulls over or threatens you with violence, whichever be greater to the power of ten.

Had that beautifully in Mitchell Street Glasgow not long ago. Something was making it a bit busier with motor traffic than usual and a bright soul decided to overtake the queue driving on the cycle lane which I was riding along towards him - so I stopped and folded my arms. Got good support from the drivers who were behaving and using the road as marked. Eventually he gave in and had to reverse all the way back to Gordon Street.
