An alive hedgehog, beside the park road-side path last night. Haven't seen an unsquashed one for years, even down south.

Many geeses at varying altitudes to be seen yesterday afternoon over the ash lagoons at Moulebourg. All seemed to be heading off in a southwesterly direction.

On Saturday I bore witness to a buzzard hunting (what I think was) a pigeon in the Cammo estate grounds. Although they finally flew over some trees that moved them out of my line of sight so I didn't see the conclusion, it was nonetheless very fascinating.

Their shouting at each other, the geese that is, is acting as my alarm clock for the next few days/weeks while they are going on holiday. Every single one of them have flown over my bedroom at some point. It's kinda nice...

Two different kingfishers at the Water of Leith, one near the modern art gallery. had to stop for five minutes to watch it fish...you can't buy that!

Wildlife lowlight yesterday was an injured young pigeon flapping along the ground ahead of me up the water of leith path behind Murrayfield playing fields. It hid in the bushes while I waited for the SSPCA to come out. She caught it in about 2 seconds (I'd tried for ages & failed earlier) and said it will be fine once it grows back a few feathers. Good news.

Eight pheasant in field off glenbrook road, 3 male, five without red cap. Later one very bedraggled male on wall. Mummy grouse and five wee ones on Lang Whang. On way out, thn had male on the way home fly across my path.
Ex-wildlife one very flat fox, fur and minor intestine only left. One just dead hedgehog in Wilsontown

Nothing special. Just ducks and moorhens. Not even particularly well framed.
But it captures that 'now i remember why i do this' moment.
Daughter went 'the wrong way' out of the school gates. Turned out she wanted to go home by 'the quiet route' which is down Viewforth, along Horne terrace and through to Dorset Place. Which was really much nicer than Gilmore Place. And then she asked to stop by the canal. So we just stood there for quite a while. very calm and peaceful (except for all the 'ding, dings' on the other side of the canal.

@SRD As well as the atmosphere, your picture also captures the really weird clouds that were hanging over the city this evening: a very uniform line that might have been a vapour trail but were much fatter than usual.

Two herons, flying together low over some shrubs by a burn near Braco on Sunday afternoon. Funny things they are in flight, great long legs.

Same here on the North Esk. I hadn't seen it until my cocker spaniel picked it up and brought it over.

I spotted the blue flash of a kingfisher flying away from me just above the surface of the canal near the Hermiston House Road bridge this morning. I've spotted one in that area a few times, but it must be more than a year ago now.

An owl hangs out on the Newbridge/Kirkliston path.
Saw it Monday evening, and again on Tuesday. Tuesday it waited til I passed, then buzzed me - flew over passing inches over my head. Thought I might have it on camera but lights point down.

Dragged the 'bent out today, to see if my headset overhaul had corrected the steering issue, and headed to the NEPN, as I got there, I heard terrible rattling from the rear of the bike, and so I stopped to investigate. I lent over the machine and inspected the rear 'guards*, and out of the corner of my eye spotted something wee and sleekit - a beautiful little mouse (when they're not in my house, they're beautiful...) - but this one was not in the slightest cow'ring or tim'rous - it hopped towards me (I had adopted my usual wildlife posture, frozen still), then sniffed at my right shoe, wee eyes gleaming, whiskers twitching - and then little beggar hopped on to my toes, and sat on its haunches sniffing the air. At that moment another bike came down the NEPN, and there was a brief blur and I was mouseless.
Not exotic or unusual, but a lovely incident.
*Sadly terminal, I'll have to hunt for a replacement set before I can use the 'bent again.

Heading back from Carnwath before tarbrax a field of very large sheep, with very long hair and very big horns. I think they were long haired Bighorns.
On the way out I kept getting overtaken by ERC who would then stop to regroup and I would pass them again. Each time I tried to hang on to the faster riders but it was not to be. I kept them in eyesight as thought they might stop at apple pie bakery but if they did it must have Been quick, think they went down the road to Biggar. Would have been icy.
As I was approaching tarbrax turn. Spied a very swiftly moving lone cyclist. He came on to the Whang ahead of me and I did not catch him until later when he stopped in a layby to answer a call. he had his back to me so I rolled on, he then caught me later on and Lo and behold if it was not Mr Matt from Just Bikes. he then kindly crawled along at my pace back to Balerno via Glenbrook.
Lovely day for it.

First Goosander of the winter: four of five (mainly male, I think) on the canal near Wester Hailes this morning.
A heron standing very still by the canal beyond the bypass. Haven't seen one for a long time.

I've seen that heron a few times recently. It was tending to stand at the far side of the canal a few weeks ago but this week it has been standing in reeds near the towpath.
