From reading the wiki sounds like '75 was hot as well, which exacerbated the '76 heat.
And snow up to your thighs, with schools still open... Ah yes, had that in the 80s too!

I've just been googling 1979 weather. It seems it didn't improve. August 1979 saw a storm hit the Fastnet yacht race resulting in 18 deaths. I remember that.
