The aim of this site is to attract a wide range of people who have something to do with bicycles - keen or casual.

In addition it is hoped that CCE will be useful to people new to cycling and those still thinking about riding a bike in or around the city.

CCE has been set up by .anthonyrobson who produces the online magazine citycycling and Chris Hill who runs the CyclingEdinburgh.info site.

As an open forum it can be read by anyone (all ages and backgrounds) - so no swearing or abuse please.

Feel free to post a comment or question.

Due to popular demand, there is now a facility to get email messages sent to you if people post on a thread after you.

You have to mark the thread as a favourite.

It's slightly over 3 months since this Forum was quietly launched with the sidebar saying -

"If you're reading this, NOTE this forum is under development.

CityCyclingEdinburgh is an experiment to see if a new forum for people who cycle in and around Edinburgh (Scotland) is going to be a valuable addition to the web."

If you are a regular reader/contributor (or even an irregular one) I think you'll agree it has a certain value - with added fun.

This forum has attracted a range of intelligent/wise (not always synonymous!) people who like riding bikes - especially to work/as an 'everyday' activity.

Because of this site, a ride ON the canal has been 'organised'. Other rides along the canal and also with Tartan and Tweed seem set to happen in 2010.

Advice on riding in the snow has been sought and given. Some snow has been cleared and perhaps the council will have some more 'cycle commuting friendly' policies in place before next winter (not that this one is over yet).

A lot of people know things they didn't previously.

The RULES - No personal insults. No swearing - have hardly been broken.

It will be interesting to see if (when) the weather gets warmer people abandon their computers for the open road or whether the torpor ends and the forum warms up...

    "What is the 1% rule?"

"It's an emerging rule of thumb that suggests that if you get a group of 100 people online then one will create content, 10 will "interact" with it (commenting or offering improvements) and the other 89 will just view it."

Well - this site is doing MUCH better than that!

It's taken me 3 months to notice this

"Questions/Support/Help – This is a special forum where where people can ask questions"!!!

    Any other obvious mistakes?

    This one now corrected.

    CCE QR code? why?

    fun/'market research'

People 'noticed' the tag cloud quickly enough.

'most' people don't know what a QR code is.

And there are few signs of it 'happening' in the UK.

Was going to get round to asking if anyone wanted to put it in their bikeshed/workplace.

QR codes are something I'm looking at for 'simple messages' in schools, but I haven't got round to finding out how many mobile 'phones have QR readers built in.

    Next term.

ahhh I see - you want to stick it around places
I downloaded a QR reader (Quickmark) for my windows mobile phone it was handy when browsing a site of apps to get the phone quickly to the download page, it does barcodes too but I haven't yet figured out quite how

I suppose I could laminate it and stick it on our bike shed at work or put it on my locker perhaps...
print it onto stickers and sticker the cycle routes around town?

is everyone getting funny error messages when they post, or is it just me?

Small bit of self indulgence, but it does indicate the range of subjects we cover -

    (Above)

I don't know if that rule has been revised, or how much that covers casual 'visitors' as well as regulars and registered users.

Over the five years about 1,100 have bothered to register, but only 700 have ever posted - some only once, others just a handful of times.

This year 308 have posted something.

Obviously there are some regular posters - but there are only 24 who started in 2009 and have done so every year since.

All seems like a healthy amount of engagement/interaction.

(Stats possible because of new server minder.)

Just noticed the links section at the right of the page still shows "Pedal on Parliament Now working on 2014 event #PoP2014"

    Should/Could this be updated?

is there a way (on this forum) to get a topic to open at the most recent page ? rather than on page 1 which seems to be my default, so I then have to click the latest one ?

all those clicks add up, possible up to 30secs over a week.

Yes - (it was a while before someone told me - and I set this site up!) - just click on 'x minutes/hours' beneath LATEST POST.

Thanks for 7 years of CCE, I think I've been aware of it for about 3 years.

Now, is there a way of scrolling down "latest discussions"? Contributions on the forum are so lively that threads can fall off within a day.

"is there a way of scrolling down "latest discussions"? "

    Sadly I don't think so.

Some themes - particularly the top three - get most posts, so clicking on these will help a bit.

Heads up for chrome users, the next release of chrome which is expected on the 31st January, will start to mark the forum as "Not Secure" due to the password not being sent over https.

Nothing new here to worry about, and my intention is to get a certificate and have a test version of the site working over https over the next few days.

gggrrrr / argh ... how do I find an old post ??

15mins spent with google advance search has failed to unearth the thread about the Linlithgow canal works and the open days.

Clearly I have not gained sufficient points to unlock the level of sorcery required.

There is a conventional wisdom on CCE that the Search isn't great and Google is better.

Google is certainly good if a key word is in the title of the thread.

    I found this

    http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=643&page=99#post-241235

by just putting canal fish into CCE Search (not the top suggestion).
