I do like the idea of the spherical-compass StemCaptain (or possibly the thermometer) but I'd be as assiduous in removing it when parked as I am with my computer.

@Stickman The next time you're down for an ogle of the Cowmobile could you measure his chainring's BCD for me?

That's what I'm doing next - two dynamo wheels for me and the missus.

At the risk of diverting this thread rather than start another one - anyone know how to work out if a rim needs replaced?

When you can see the inner tube? I generally replace it when the wear indicator has gone plus the usual "must deal with that" delay.

I've replaced mine in the past on the basis that the rim has been irrecoverably dented (aluminium can't really be bent back) or it's "overly" concave

Can you not just buy a new rim? They are what?? 20 - 30 quid for a reasonable one? I go for 36 spoke wheels these days as the roads really give the wheels a pounding on the commute!

@insto: try getting a straight edge (big screwdriver or similar) and check for concavity of the braking surface that way. Otherwise really you need to measure the rim wall thickness with a caliper.

  7. "Could swap for a bit if you want to see the difference as it has the option of shiing in daytime, if you prefer that"

It actually has a switch for that as well, so can have daytime running lights if I want (still don't know if the sensor works, was dull enough this morning that they were on, but I want to get out in brightness to see how good it is at sensing - in truth I guess you want them coming on before it's truly dark...

@wingpig - popping out at lunchtime, I'll swing by the bike and measure. The 42T is good for flat sprinting and downhill, but I think the 39T is more sensible, especially when the weather goes properly inclement and windy again. Oh, and I liked the look of the thermometer StemCaptain.

@Insto - cheers! Probably have the bits end of July, start of August (to give me a month's running in time).

@stickman - Nice to know I'm not the only one who ogles some of the bikes down there!

I'm on 42*12-26 (or maybe 28) at the moment until my front mech decides to behave, which gets me up Calton Hill, Ramsay Gardens and the High Road and which only starts to get excessively spinny at around 30mph, so with one less tooth at the back 39 at the front ought to do you.
