For those that cycle using the cycle path up to the canal, you may have noticed a couple of dangerously parked Peoples vans, taking up most the cycle path over the m8 bridge. Using it for cheap advertising, but parked such that if a cyclist was doored on the path they would be knocked over the bridge. Not nice!
I emailed their chairman from their website and got a swift response to say they will take action. I won't be passing that way for the next few days, so if anybody spots them back please reply here.

@Shuggiet. Van was there on Monday afternoon. I will check again tmrw when I next pass along GSR. I thought you could not park on motorway bridges for security reasons.

@shuggiet - good idea. I'll be going by tomorrow: if they are still there (or if they come back) I'll follow your example.

Isn't there some law about not parking on the pavement/footway?

On Monday there was an AAA hire van there too - is that the same people as Peoples?

Not sure if I spotted an AA vehicle hire van ,when I passed on the last couple of days. One was definitely 'Peoples of Sighthill'. Was the AA one blocking the cycle path too?

Other than clearly blocking a pavement/cycle lane, I'm not sure if there is an offence related to 'parking on motorway bridges'. Can't find anything relevant using google..

Report it to Police as an abandoned vehicle obstructing the footway?

The AA Hire one this morning was definitely parked mostly on the footway/cyclepath. It had gone by the time I came past on the way home.

Argh ! I was all fired up to take photos, have impassioned discussions, and send off emails to ceo's and police. Nobody there ,except a record 4 bikes going down the path at the time i was there. Well done if somebody else has sorted out AA! Could be another lobbying success of CCE !

@gembo "Lanark road west all marked up for new surface on way into Balerno this morning"

Do you mean the bit as you get near the traffic lights into Balerno? There are loads of straight yellow lines on the road that are new. I don't understand why they are going to do that bit, there are lots of sections that are much worse (the bit in Junpier Green just after you've crossed the bypass heading out of town being an obvious example).

Lots of roads in Currie getting resurfaced at the moment. Nice, but they certainly weren't in the worst condition I've seen and are not particularly busy.

I seen that the other day and took it to be traffic calming going in. It looks like they've marked out rectangular boxes away from the pavement which I think will probably end up being kerbs to try and slow drivers down and trap cyclists. I guess the speed limit sign didn't work.

The van was there this morning about 08:30ish.

Observed from the M8 below; there's a chance it was on the next bridge to the west?

@stevo "I ... took it to be traffic calming going in"
    - on the main A70 road? A bit unlikely I would have thought?
They have, however, put flashing 30mph reminder signs on the final stretch up the hill before you get to the twisty bit. I will not, of course, be attempting to set off the one on the downhill side on my way home this evening. No, that isn't even the slightest bit tempting...

Probably but it does look like the pattern they put in other places before such work. I was thinking along the lines off the flashing signs haven't actually worked and so more extreme methods are now being employed.

TBH it doesn't need to be a main road, its only the quickest way to one village. For pretty much any where else served by that end of the A70 the M8 or A71 (Currie) is a route more suited to carrying large volumes of fast traffic.

@cb...Yes, the van (or a van) is now on the next bridge along. Can't see from Gogar Station rd, whether it's the same van though, and what/if it's blocking.Cycle path on Gogar Station Rd all clear though.

No sign of any van on way to or from office today .
If it is now going to be parked on a bridge away from the cycke path then that is a result.

Another van parked thoughtlessly and dangerously on the bridge for the sake of cheap advertising. This time its Western Nissan of Corstorphine Road. I'm tried to find an email contact for their mgmt. If anybody knows one let me know.

@shuggiet. It was there yesterday too. If it's there on the way home I'll get in touch with somebody to complain tonight (I can't email from work). My thought was to go straight to Nissan UK, with a question about whether this is something they encourage in their franchisees...

Both Nissan UK and Western Nissan have Twitter accounts, but again I can't do this from work (and am not completely sure how to do it, tbh!)

I sent a complaint into the Western Nissan webpage. (thanks biketrain..) .Also well hunted down MeepMeep!

I also did a bit of googling.. Whilst it's not yet an offence to park on a pavement (scottish govt passing bill to make it so), it is an offence to park on a 'cycle track' which appears to be defined in the Road Traffic Act as a cycle path on a pavement...

See Prohibition of driving or parking on cycle tracks.

(1)Subject to the provisions of this section, any person who, without lawful authority, drives or parks a [mechanically propelled] vehicle wholly or partly on a cycle track is guilty of an offence.

This section does not extend to Scotland.!

It's an offence to drive on the footway though, is it not? So I can only assume they are dropping the vans in from the back of a lorry by crane?

    Posted 10 years ago #
  28. "It's an offence to drive on the footway though, is it not?"

Yep, but has to be seen to be doing it as obviously all the cars parked on pavements may have teleported there and so didn't commit an offence.

"It's an offence to drive on the footway though, is it not?"

Yeah, but it's back to the old nonsense about the police having to see vehicle driving there!

    EDIT

    As above (WC)!

What I don't understand is why it doesn't seem to 'work ' for driving off pavements...

    Police must see that sometimes??

Van was gone when I went by at 1730, so your message may have had an effect shuggiet.
