ok it might just be festival related, but why did a fair-size passenger jet just come over so low?

From my desk I heard it and saw its shadow on the castle, but didn't see the actual plane. Thought I'd imagined it as noone else saw it.

maybe we both did.

Came over our building (South Gyle) at 1,000 feet, we're about 150 feet up?
It's BA's new Dreamliner toy. They've come to show it off to Jock-o-land. Taking some dignitaries for a joyride in it up north and then back in time for high tea.

I missed it!!!!!!

Thanks everyone :D I had no idea :)

Didn't realise that it was a Dreamliner at first as it wasn't on fire.

Kaputnic, you naughty boy, that make me chuckle. I thought they were called Screamliner when they were on fire?

biketrain, you have destroyed my workplan with your pesky URL.
Posted 11 years ago # -
@biketrain - that website's amazing!
Saw a plane (a 737) looping around Edinburgh on the map, and looked out the window and saw it exactly where it was supposed to be. So awesome :D
Right ... work!

So that's what all the spotters were doing at the old bridge. I thought there were more than usual. Beats having a life I suppose.

I missed it!!!!!!
So did I. And what's most embarrassing is that I work in the building opposite Kaputnik, next to a window, so I really ought to have noticed...
To be fair though, my unobservancy skills are not specific to large airborne objects (however reliably). I hadn't realised it had rained heavily this afternoon until someone in the office mentioned it.

We had a heads up from my colleague's husband who works in an office that has an airscanner radio

Ahh..I saw it from Portobello beach this afternoon at work and did wonder why it was so low.

Planefinder is great.
Although apparently there are no planes at all over China.......shhhh or they will hear you !

Read this thread five minutes too late to see that URL to be able to see what just spent five minutes performing three circles around the airport (or at least somewhere in that sort of dirwction, neatly in the gap between two houses) before finally heading off. Didn't look like it was particularly trying to gain height with each circuit.

Having now changed my anorak for my oil skins, I can now bring you Ship Finder. @cyclingmollie you need not apply, unless you have all your work done for the day.

what are these three little planes doing?

ah, they're lining up to land, didn't realise there was anywhere to land there! (still wondering why they flew together). http://goo.gl/maps/kH9o1
agh, damn you cce and your time-wasting links!

Wow, planefinder is amazing. If ever so slightly terrifying.

I was just walking to the shop at Bonaly and something that looked like and sounded like a Spitfire flew over, quite low, not very fast, heading NW. About 4.30ish.

I prefer MarineTraffic. I check it to see if I should bring my camera when I'm going to be working in Leith.

A spot of googling has uncovered this story from the Herald today. No mention of a flypast but it does seem a bit of a coincidence.

Passengers included VisitScotland chairman Mike Cantlay, Harvey Nichols regional stores director Gordon Drummond and Edinburgh Lord Provost Donald Wilson.

I've just downloaded the planefinder app. That's my day sorted.

Onlookers could have been forgiven for thinking disaster was imminent as a passenger jet swooped over their heads at just 1000 feet above the city centre.
Another eyewitness said onlookers in the city centre had been left stunned.
The [sic] said: “I’ve never seen a plane fly so low that far away from an airport in my life. The noise was deafening and it looked like it could almost have knocked the spire off the Tron Kirk.
We all looked up in amazement at the great iron chicken in the sky, then fell to our knees and prayed for salvation as this was surely the end of days and the rapture was nigh

kaps - indeed, the same people who think the RAF are on a bombing run when the Festival Tornados go over the castle?
They would have kittens at Edinburgh Park when the crosswind runway is in use !!
