"no ribbon cutting opportunities / jollies / hard hat wearing / canapés and champers receptions / etc."

Not strictly true, but it took a while to find this -

Dinorwig Power Station is a pumped hydroelectric station in Wales. It's great for picking up sudden fluctuations in the grid but a pretty lousy battery.

It's only 76% efficient which means that (ignoring capital cost) any electricity it produces is 30% more expensive (money and pollution) than it would have been if used at the point of production.

I'm not sure about a cold start but when in standby mode it can go from 0 to 1.32Gw of production in just 12 seconds (coincidentally 76% production).

If you want to read more about it there is a pretty good article here: https://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/05/16/geeks_guide_electric_mountain/

Not entirely fair, they pump when the electricity is cheap taking up base load from nuclear and coal which isn't so easily "turned down". I expect wind and solar will also be in the mix of mismatched supply demand.

Also it would take a maaahoooosssive battery to provide 1.32Gw in 12 seconds! Though lithium is much more efficient its also much more expensive than water as a storage medium.
