Cyclist killed in car crash on Fife road between Strathmiglo and Gateside

A male cyclist has been killed after being hit by a car on a Fife road.

The crash happened on the A91 between Strathmiglo and Gateside at 11:30 when a Vauxhall Corsa travelling west hit a cyclist going in the same direction

Another death on another A-road. Scotland's roads are safer than ever. Apparently.

If one projects forward the current rate of deaths to year end, it would result in a 128% increase over 2 years since 2011.

Something for Keith "Two more lanes" Brown to mull over next time he says Scotland's roads are safest they've ever been.

    Sad news. :(

Looks like a broad straight road, with ample room for a high-quality segregated cyclepath that would demonstrate the country's commitment to active travel / cycling as transport. But the Government's got better things to splurge cash on, hasn't it?

Looks like cycling deaths might exceed the A9 this year.

I'll let you guess which one Keith "11 more miles" Brown is intending to spend billions of pounds on in the name of "safety"

    Terrible news.

I know this road well and travel on it regularly to visit family. It suffers from the usual really bad drivers - a combination of speeding locals (often very young looking) who think they know the road so well that nothing will happen to them, tourists in hire cars, and expensive BMWs/Audis/Mercs being driven aggressively on their way to St Andrews.

Thoughts are with the cyclist's family.

I feel for the family who have lost a loved one.

I never ride on this road, east of the Glenfarg turn off. If we are riding in the area we head up the Sandy Road which runs here:

On Friday last we rode up route 1 from Falkland to St Andrews and were surprised how nice the roads were, quite traffic free until near St Andrews.

    This is awful news :(

@SRD I was speaking to someone the other day who thought the grave marker meant that number of cyclists had died at that spot, at the top of the walk. Is there any way to put some kind of explanation on/with it?

@Karenjs - you need to talk to kaputnik, not me.

There is an information panel on the back, but unfortunately it's not readable now because of where it is installed. Needs a QR code, i guess!

How does this compare with the number of cyclists using the roads, or the number of miles travelled? The increase in fatalities does look disproportionately high. Of course, we shouldn't be having any fatalities. Obviously it's all these #bloodycyclists throwing themselves under cars and HGVs. :(

The only thing we have reliable data on is growth in commuting in Edinburgh. Anecdotal data on growth in sport cycling as measured by membership uptake in various orgs. Otherwise, little reliable data and what is there shows little growth.

yes it's on the back, as it's designed to be freestanding. If anyone has a laminator I could re-print the information and cable-tie it alongside.

Alternative would be to add a simple line along bottom explaining.

Shadow Minister for Transport and Veterans: Mark Griffin

    From: http://labourlist.org/2013/07/scottish-labours-new-shadow-cabinet/

Mark Griffin is a regional MSP for Central Scotland.
Mark is a member of the Local Government and Regeneration Committee.
He graduated from the University of Strathclyde with a degree in mechanical engineering in 2007 and worked in the engineering industry before being elected to serve as a North Lanarkshire Councillor for Kilsyth in 2008.

    From: http://www.scottishlabour.org.uk/people/entry/mark-griffin

Looks a bit green around the gills compared to old "two more lanes" if you ask me. Bet he never yomped across the Falklands/Malvinas either. Nor killed any conscripts.

There was something on the BBC yesterday about some woman called Ruth re-shuffling her shadows. I think she is leader of the Monster Raving Loonies or something. Not sure who their new spokeperson for squirty flowers, veterans and building roads is.

He's very quiet on the whole issue of cyclists being killed while the Minister proposes new roads and stupid advertising campaigns. You'd think, in terms of electoral politics, a Minister presiding over this kind of death toll and offering only a Pantomime Horse strategy, would be something an ambitious young man would want to comment on.

Even so, you'd think his politician ambitions would over ride his hobbies and he'd see the chance to stick the boot into the minister. I think I'll spend some quality Twitter time prodding at him.

Shadow Minister for Transport and Veterans

I was corrected in the pub on Wednesday that Scotland has no Shadow Ministers, only Shadow Spokepersons.

Labour, Liberals and Conservatives seem to be offering no opposition whatsoever to Keith "I love the smell of ashpalt in the morning" Brown, and merely murmur approval that they too would build and widen lots of big roads too.

Presumably there's a fear that saying anything against dualling the A9 will lead to/perpetuate the haemorrhaging of votes north of the central belt.
