I hope everyone is enjoying their cycle comutes today:

I fail as I arrived back from being abroad late laetnight/this morning and couldn't face the ride in after a week off the bike. #fail...

    I feel your pain, Dave.

After nearly 3 weeks off the bike wherein I spent the majority of it gorging on all manner of chocolatey, cheesey, alcoholic and pasta indulgences, getting back on the bike yesterday for a tame 3 mile flat commute was very tough indeed.

Be patient with yourself when you can face getting back on!

I forgot all about Cycle to Work Day, and cycled to work as normal. I went the quiet way though because my legs felt tired.

I went 0.43 fewer miles than usual as I had two errands to perform. I ended up including what was my former normal short morning commute before I moved house, noting that it crams in a lot of really badly lumped and rutted road into its 1.69 miles.

Thursday is my day off cycle commuting due to work requirements. However I do cycle just about every other day.

I did see quite a few cyclists this morning but not sure that it was more than of late.

Smile at them - that will really annoy them

I asked some of them politely to move up the carriage so others could get on. Got death stares. Bad times

Working just over a mile away from my house today so I made up for my pitiful contribution to cycle to work day by coming home for lunch. Will shortly cycle back to the school I'm working at, then cycle to the office which is about 2.5 miles from the school before coming home again.

Since we mostly all cycle to work everyday anyway, I think instead we should have a 'drive to work' day... with a twist...

Everyone puts their bikes on the back of their car (or roof) to show they would normally be cycling, then drives to work, preferably at 12mph and by the most circuitous route.

Might be more effective than critical mass...?

I really enjoyed my cycle to work today until I reached the entrance to the building. I felt something had landed on the nape of my neck. Soon after I felt the burning sensation from what I understand to be a wasp sting. (I saw nothing) Still sore now as I write. That's the first time I have been attacked when riding the bike. No doubt many cyclists are stung in the course of their travels and the government are doing absolutely nothing about it to my knowledge. Shocking!

@tarmac jockey you've clearly missed the Nice Wasp Code

@eddie_h, that won't work for me as I don't have a car. Can't I just put my bike on the train as per usual? I would cycle the entire distance, but it's equivalent to a Brevet Populaire audax ride each way, and my working day would be somewhat curtailed...

Had 60 people turn up for our cycle to work day bike breakfast - not bad for a town like Dumfries, especially as it's the first year we've had it. Nice mix of people too, though mostly hardened commuters. Had some councillors and officials there too to hear first hand what people thought...

I'm getting over a lurgy so worked from home. I do cycle the other 364 days over the year though, so that's allowed I guess?

Bike racks at work today were surprisingly less busy in comparison to the past few months, considering the day.

Irony, I drove in today as SWMBO wasn't well and needed dropping off.

Took an hour to drive home, vs ~ 35 mins on the bike.

    Agony.

Well, that explains one free space, at least. But I'm fairly certain there were at least 8 bikes missing in comparison to the end of August.

Probably folk saw the forecast, thought "Hm, it's going to rain later and get a bit parky. Maybe not then."

I just packed the waterproof jacket. Turned out nice, bit of rain later but not during my commute. Still seems pleasantly warm. Pas de probleme!

Roads seemed oddly car-filled today. Racks at work looked the same, but I have heard via shuggiet's pal that a statistician in the building is making a nae-kiddin' tally.

Had to chuck some scooters out the way at d mains primary the day before it was chocker

Today pretty full at Waverley court but always is except maybe Fridays and wet all day days

Five bar gate is my favourite tally

We should have a poll of our favourite tallies?

No bike or job at the moment. Otherwise, had a lovely day.

Eech, knew about the bikelessness, but the no job is news. Fingers crossed, Ross.

Favourite tally will always be the Tally Ho in Dundee, a pub that may or may not still trade under that name, but in the mid/late 90's was the least ID-diligent pub that terribly middle-class darlings like me and my friends could drink in with getting stabbed.

Can check on pubs of Dundee with my contacts

Having spent many years attending Tannadice stadium of mostly woe, there was one good pub in Dundee every decade

Not a great tally but at least there was always one

I don't think I was ever in the Tally Ho (though my recollection may be hazy) but during my student days I did frequent McGonigal's (now alas Drouthy Neebors) opposite the art college, and a few other bars around the Perth Road area. Fairly stabbing free. Also the (I think?) Tay Bar/Roseangle Bar (on Roseangle) which was trying to be a bit chi-chi and wine bar-ish and had a balcony(!) overlooking the silvery Tay.

No longer drink except special occasions so would not know which bars are stab free these days.

I'll be in Dundee this weekend - if anyone needs me to check out any of these fine establishments, please send some drinking vouchers (and if you want a reply, a self-addressed envelope) to....

Do we know anything about the Ghost bike in Dundee? I was surprised to see one there.

The snug up at tannadice was nice in the 1990s

Mennies [the Speedwell Bar] good from 1980s onwards, as was The Phoenix

The Scout was the place in the 1970s

The Phoenix* would be a regular stop on pub crawls back in the day. It's still going and was still a good bar when I last visited, as far as I recall. I think I was in the Speedwell a couple of times, but not often.
