Frosty patches ride in today from Dalgety - not much ice underneath as far as i could tell, no studs today.

I could feel the lack of riding (1.5 weeks) catching up with me today, and perhaps, endulging in the festive season around my belly too :)

Quiet on the roads though which was nice.

Bit of frost/ice on the Lochend Road slope down to the bike path, a bit on the path then a lot on the wiggleslope up to Hawkhill Avenue.

I have my waterproof trousers with me today, ready for their annual day out. Also the waterproof socks.

I got very wet yesterday (maybe this should be in the "Confessions of a cycle commuter" thread?) because I couldn't be bothered to put my Comedy Red Cycle Cape on before cycling to the station. It wasn't raining that hard when I left the office and I worry that the cape obscures my rear light so I try to avoid using it in the dark. It then rained rather harder. My coat (which is cloth) is still damp this morning.

Temperature forecast for early tomorrow has dropped. Now 2 degrees with heavy rain/sleet. Not pleasant.

Watching the rugby at Myreside on BBC Alba. Definitely hailstones there.

Learned that the Gaelic for hail is "clach-ghainmhich". I did have to look up the spelling.

Any updates about the state of the canal towpath prior to my first commute of the year tomorrow a little before 9 would be appreciated. Still resisting winter tyres.

jdanielp - was along the towpath between Craiglockhart and Wester Hailes around lunchtime today. It was very dry, effectively no ice. Assuming it stays dry tonight then I imagine it will be fine tomorrow.

Was down the WoL path with the staff the water bailiff whittled for me trying to break up the puddles as the path is very hard and dry if a little ivy in places. I will be off down t tomorrow.

@jdanielp The path is unfortunately all frosted out around Harrison Park now at 6.30am but not slippy, so you should be fine getting to HW.

I piked from my commute :( now my lift lives 300m away, so I am getting a bit choosy with weather conditions... :/

-5 degrees in Eskbank. Roads look okay apart from the odd frozen puddle.

I didn't want to risk asthma so am commuting by bus

@bill thanks, frost should be doable so I will just take it nice and slow. Hopefully my gear changer won't freeze again though.

The penalty was high for using the bus: 1 hour compared to 20-25 mins by bike. (The recent-ish route change of the no 3 doesn't help - taking in an unnecessary half-hour diversion onto the A7 in rush-hour).
Maybe next time I'll walk - it's only 5 miles.

I'm pleased with my Brompton's new safety feature. In cold weather the front brake freezes solid so that I can't accidentally use it. Rear wheel braking is much safer in these conditions...

@amir - Did the 3 used to go along Melville Road? Turning right at the roundabout in the middle of Eskbank was probably just too much fun for them?

    the front brake freezes solid

Definitely a feature rather than a bug…the u-bend of a cable is mainly to blame. I've had mine freeze solid once or twice, the ameliorative solution being at least annual disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly using lots of grease on the cable and the cable housing ends.

You might also want to disassemble the caliper itself, and unseize/clean/grease. I modified my B's calipers with a Dremel so that I could extract the cables without having to pull the ends right through the housing stops.

Fridgey and sparkly on the Restalrig Path and Lochend Butterfly and Crawford Bridge. Leith Links should be very sparkly.

@Frenchy yes - Melville Road - much shorter. The excuse to go along Bonnyrigg Road is to serve more passengers, which is fine in principle but if it adds 30 mins to the journey it's not attractive to anyone. Also these folk could be/are already served by the 29 and 49.

All good between Kirkliston and McDonald Rd apart from some frozen puddles.

I notice the new cycle path on the Burnshot Bridge bypass has been partly opened, I only noticed though as the old path (the coned off strip at the side of the sliproad) now has cones dragged across it halfway down with a rope between them! Almost came a cropper but moved the cones out a wee bit for anyone coming after's benefit.

Frosty but fine on the towpath this morning although I did dismount to cross the Slateford Aqueduct just in case, and my gear cable did freeze again despite my having left the bike further away from the radiator than usual overnight. I will maybe try putting it in the spare room next time.
