I could've come a cropper the moment I transitioned from driveway to road. Fortunately my Ice Spiker kept me pointing in the right direction, and a quick foot down kept me largely upright. I hadn't put a knobbly tyre on the back so was a bit wayward on the snow-over-ice side roads south of Edinburgh. The main roads and even the traffic was OK at stupid o'clock*.

    * new commute, new waking up time, bah

Who says you can't cycle in the snow:

I don't know about anyone else, but I really enjoyed my commute this morning. Gives you that little bit more adrenaline rush...

@Rosie - Aye, at the very east end, where it turns into Midmar Drive.

Had a client meeting across town this morning. One piston of rear brake has jammed. Didn't fancy front brake only commute through wet snow and ice and needed to look presentable.

Rescheduled meeting for post-rush hour and drove automobile. That worked, after slidy side road.

Town festooned with delivery vans on double yellow and red lines, often on the pavement. We are becoming quite lawless (he harrumphed from his care home sofa).

It's just occurred to me that the MMW pictures show that compliance to the walking/cycling division was extremely good this morning.

Hmm. I'm cycling to the airport in the morning for an overnight work trip (assuming Kirkwall airport is open. I will take a good book for the probable wait...). Might take the mountain bike.

Likewise at Heriot-Watt. The melted areas covered over again in the space of around 5-10 minutes just now...

Towpath was icy, came off this route at Lanark road, thinking main road best bet. all OK. Until Gillespie Xroad. Came on blizzard. Pretty heavy. Cars driven carefully. I pulled in a couple of times to let them pass and also pushed on pavement for last bit.

Snow really started coming down on my way home. Lost the rear wheel on ice hidden under snow on a back street in Morningside - managed to stay upright, but got off and pushed from there.

Drivers very well behaved - apart from the turnip in an Audi 4x4 who pulled out of a side street without looking.

Take care out there - if it ices up overnight then I think I might leave the bike at home tomorrow, as it could be carnage.

Currently on a train back from Yorkshire. Get in at 9:30. Thinking I'll be best sticking to the main roads on the way home then. Thankfully brought the knobbly cross bike. Won't be any use in ice but will be better on the snow.

Nasty start, KB had slippery roads. Then okay. Nicest on Shared use pavement from Gilmerton to Dobbies as snow is safe with snow tyres and no cars. Car drivers mostly polite enough but lots of stupid driving. Unnecessarily abrupt acceleration and braking, begging for an accident.

Oh and little reduction in speed given the conditions

Mostly wet slippy but sides of even main roads white in places. Several close passes from people apparently unable to empathise with fear of wiping out on the ungritted parts.

Am I weird to say that I rather enjoyed my commute home along the towpath in the blizzard at 1645? I'd chosen the right clothes for once and had a bike with studded tyres, good brakes and good lights. I felt properly equipped, warm and safe despite the driving snow, and had quite fun making progress despite the conditions.

I'm off to Corstorphine in a bit and if the WoL path was open all the way to Roseburn I'd be quiet happy in that with the big fat mountain bike. It's the slippy drain covers, puddles hiding potholes and rule 2 driving (including snow from uncleared car roofs sliding off as they pass, gah) that made coming home so unpleasant.

Yes, off road much nicer atm. If I had time, I'd pop up the railway path towards Penicuik. That's an idea, could get up early to do just that

@amir - Any chance you could let me know how the roads/shared use paths are between Eskbank and Gilmerton are on your way in (if you go that way)? I'm supposed to be heading to Dalkeith mid morning tomorrow.

@greenroofer, yes but you had the snow behind you. It was into my teeth

@gembo - granted, but it was extremely in my teeth at 0745 this morning, and I quite enjoyed that too (although not quite as much as I didn't have exactly the right clothes on like I did in the evening)

I was disappointed with my ride home as I had put ALL my layers* on expecting a battle with the elements and I came out of the basement to it not snowing, so it was a perfectly pleasant ride home. I was disappointed that there wasn't any pedestrians to practice my bell on. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

    * I even put on my waterproof trousers for the first time in months - only to find I had them on back to front...

Just (9:45pm) cycled home from swimming. Side roads are going to be scary icy tomorrow IMHO.
