Restalrig Path now gritted, though not the Hawkhill slope.
Inverleith Park still extremely slippy on the road beside the playpark.
One wee skatey patch on At Mark's path on the park side of the bridge.

Extreme weather in Netherlands and Belgium. Not snow but high winds. Several people killed. Dutch rail cancelled all trains and Schipol was closed.
Wondered why I hadn't heard back from contact there.

Towpath largely covered in black ice between bypass and Meggetland at 1830. Every untreated surface I came across was very slippery.

I found tonight the worse conditions of the whole week. Mostly black ice with patches of compressed snow.

Tonight was the first night since that time two or three weeks ago when I reckon the towpath would have been almost unrideable without studs.

Very icy in the West of the city this morning. Need to get heavier passengers as I was wheelspinning even with my studs...

WoL path report? Was going to head to Balerno for lunch.

WoL path muddy, then icy on the up slope after the bypass at Juni green, lost my back wheel a little as I stood up to cycle up the slope as have used the shopping bike most of the week which only has one working gear (well the gears work but the rubber on the grip shifter has worn so getting back into first is tricky so I leave it in first)

From Currie onwards lovely frozen snow with patches of mud. As I mentioned n another thread, almost magical, last night if it hadn't been for the patches of mud.

Nice fat 29" tyres should be grand for that. Thanks!

@unhurt, dependent on your route, the tow path may be a little slippy though the sun might melt a channel for you. The snow from Currie on the path is well compacted and will be hanging around.

side roads and pavements very icy. even princes st pavements slippery on the sections nearest the road.

path between Rutland square and EICC absolutely treacherous. area around the sheraton on EICC has been gritted but section over the western approach is a nightmare. made the mistake of putting a foot down and then couldn't get going again.

Just walked from Old Town to Morningside. Pavements on main routes mostly gritted and/or clearing of ice in direct sunlight, else randomly slippy or not. Pavements on the side roads mostly icy so I walked in the road where it was safe. In retrospect, cycling on the road would've been easier.

Just walked from Bankhead to Edinburgh Park, anywhere on the path not in direct sunlight is pure sheet ice, wouldn't like to stumble over that at speed. Doesn't even look like an attempt had been made to clear or salt this (fairly well used) path

No salt on The Dene into Dean Village. Dry bits fine. Steep cobbles look fine, but aren't. I need a new helmet now. Ouch. Total wipe out on black ice luckily at low speed, slope so slippy I had to bum slide to the bottom pushing the bike.

@unhurt - awful. Glad you weren't injured worse.

I took a tumble once on what I thought was wet road and it was black ice. Broken shoulder, 6 weeks off work, physio.

    Take care everybody.

Just going to venture to the shops on foot and with stick.

    @unhurt

All that practicing falling off is paying dividends.

Usual caveats apply...get self and bike checked?

Thanks, and take care out there! Bike needs checked I think (split cable covers as they got wrenched) and helmet wrecked at back. And I have a cracker headache! Found salt bin and salted steps while I was waiting. No salt bins at all on my street though and the pavements and road are both skating rinks now, grr.

    Came off at the top...

Walk to shops - a few handfuls of grit on the pavement - probably one of my neighbours. Sunny side of the street mostly melted. Then coming back started walking on shady side- retreated sharpish. Looked lethal.

Anyone know the normal delay between reporting empty grit bins and them getting filled?

Most obvious (but not necessarily best) option is to ask a councillor.

This page has a map of them, and allows you to report various problems with them (but doesn't have an option for asking for new ones): https://my.edinburgh.gov.uk/app/report_it_forms/report_a_grit_bin_problem

@unhurt - that sounded grim - shame as nice in the sun but will freeze again. Hope you're ok. Blame @gembo ;-)

Cycled to Princes St and back - no (ice-related) issues. Then tried to go for a run and failed as I couldn't run on icy pavements.

Very sorry to hear about this @unhurt, I should have stipulated my WoL path route was only after the canal. I sort of alluded to the icy on the towpath but I ain't been near Dean village lately. Hope you are OK.

I did go out the Whang for a short spin. Just after harperrig reservoir at a place called Colzium Corner I was lucky enough to be overtaken by a car which I could then see going very slowly round the corner. When I reached the corner I could see why as the left hand lane was covered in snow and ice. I reckon the plough created a banking of snow. Which then slipped down over the road. Was ok coming back and the pentlands were looking beautiful in the snow and sunshine.
