“at a place called Colzium Corner”

    Presumably near CS -

It is 35 km (22 mi) long and rises in the Colzium Springs at Millstone Rig of the Pentland Hills.

Not too far. But whereas Colzium is in West Lothian I think Millstone Rig is a little further south and west and just creeps into The Borders. Remote but well paved road my son learnt to cycle on. Maps show the road which leaves from harperrig fishery, where you can hire a boat to take out on the reservoir, returning to the A70 but not sure we ever made that connection

There was a person out walking a puppy along the a70 this afternoon, which I have not seen before. Maybe heading back to the car park at Thieves Road. Several salacious stories of wrongdoing out this way.

I think that Wiki entry is well dodgy. As far as I can see from the OS map none of the watercourses that flow into Harperrig Reservoir start anywhere near near Millstone Rig (which is indeed in The Borders, but only because the border jinks in a westward loop around it.). There seems to a valley and then some more high ground between Millstone Rig and Colzium so I think it would be a hydrological miracle for the WoL to go that way.

Any springs on the north side of Millstone Rig would drain towards the Crosswood Reservoir via the Crosswood Burn. After the reservoir the Crosswoood Burn goes on to join the Camilty Water, which in turn joins the Linhouse Water, which itself eventually flows in to the Almond at West Calder. Nowhere near the WoL. The springs on the south side of the rig would drain in to the Medwin Water which flows down to Garvald

The springs which feed the WoL at Colzium, before it flows in to the Harperrig Reservoir and then turns back in to the WoL again at the outflow, emerge in the arc of high ground between West Cairn Hill, Colzium Hill and Torweaving Hill.

I went for a bit of a wander in the snowy Pentland Hills from the Carlops car park. It was lovely with snow up to my knees in places. Freezing wind on the way back down but a refreshing pint in the Allan Ramsey.

It seems selfish sports people were blocking other road users in West Highlands.
    Not cyclists but skiers...

NorthernPolice (@northernPolice) tweeted at 1:11 pm on Sat, Jan 20, 2018:
    TRAFFIC ISSUES AT @glencoemountain & @TheNevisRange .

Car parks at both ski resorts are now FULL. Cars left on access roads are causing obstructions for gritters and other vehicles. Please remove them or risk them being seized.

    Glencoe is a funny place

Tiny ski area, with a generous car park. Seldom 50% full.

Except on a weekend after it snows in the central belt, when the forecast is for blue skies.

I came home, after it had turned to rain. MMW seemed quite slushy/icy, while NMW was just wet. Supposed to warm up, but if it doesn't, watch out tomorrow.

Also saw a car that appeared to have mounted the pavement on west side of George square, but railings seemed to have prevent it crashing through and into basement space.

(yes, this should have been in sentient cars thread..

Any news about the state of the towpath tomorrow morning would be appreciated. I might just leave cycling until Tuesday to be safe, but if it's ok sooner then great.

I don't know about the towpath but the snow's almost gone up here in Fairmilehead - even after yesterday's mini-dump - which is at a significantly higher altitude than the canal (there's a reason the water works used to be here). The temperature started rising as it got dark last night, so no overnight frosts. I reckon there's close to zero chance of ice on the towpath - It might be a bit muddy (certainly mucky) in places, though.

The forecast last night reckoned on about 4ºC today, and rising through the week, so I wasn't surprised that spikes were overkill today. The snow is still lying in drifts on smaller roads by the A701, Roslin and Bush way, but the going was fine. I really can't be doing with snow these days.

I was well caught out today going through Davidsons Mains Park and the path behind Tesco. Treacherous was an understatement with water sitting on uneven ice which was extremely slippy.

I expect it to be OK going home though.

"Warning issued after ‘coldest night for 2 years’"

Which is not really saying much is it? The previous couple of winters have been pretty mild. Perhaps just a warning that, guess what, winter can be a bit chilly sometimes.....maybe even a spot of snow or ice around.

“maybe even a spot of snow or ice around“

    Surely not in Scotland?

East side of country + Forth, makes it all quite pleasant most of the time.

Climate Change seems to mean warmer and (it seems to me) less general windiness.

Unfortunately KB isn’t displaying its long term info.

I was caught out yesterday morning on the wee section of the WOL that I go on between Dean village and Stockbridge. Sheet ice from wall to wall at one section shaded by the bridge from the rain. I got about half way across before unclipping to try and skate the rest of the way.

Perfectly fine on the return trip after rain and +0 temps during the day. Looks ming out. Happy to be working from haem.

A bit breezy and I got very wet about 8:15 - 8:30 going to Livingston - but due to having stuff on tomorrow and Thursday evening I really needed to do the Long Commute today before the cold weather comes back.

Davidsons Mains park still had some icy bits so with that in mind I avoided the path behind Tesco which was really bad yesterday.

    Gusty tomorrow

It was raining heavily as I was cycling about an hour ago, and I found myself thinking "The snow was preferable to this, I wish it was colder again."

It started hailing, which will teach me.

When I left george square at 5.20 it was dry; I arrived at warrender baths to collect minisrd in a torrential, biblical, downpour. When we got to Bruntsfield Place a bit after 5.35, there were rivers of water running down the road.

The rumble of a wheelie bin rolling itself along the pavement. Self-driving wheelie bin.. Neighbour's is lying down deid or sleeping at the back. Left it as is - it will only fall down again.
