pffft - raining in the bay, sleety on the a90 - perhaps not the nicer snowy ride i thought i was missing....

got an eye test today, so might be asking advice about cycling glasses when you need glasses!

Any canal towpath updates on ice or snow? Looks like either a light layer of snow and/or a heavy frost (with ice?) in town. I suspect I'll default to the bus anyway.

Lying snow around Gilmerton at 0730-0745 today. Be prepared for getting caught in a shower - my experience was awful - blizzard with very strong gusts, very cold. Should have worn waterproof trousers that I had in my bag. Was able to cycle in car tracks.

I rode through a proto-blizzard by Roslin at 0650 today. I was glad I'd made the snap decision to wear my woolly hat instead of my Icewear woollen headband that is otherwise wonderfully cosy. I had the torpedo's spraydeck in place to keep out the elements, but left my roof at home.

There was some slippery slush here and there in town, but otherwise it's mostly just wet. It looked similar further out, with a little more snow still lying here and there, but I don't suppose it will last the day. I probably could have cycled cautiously along the towpath as it turns out and I will hope to be back on the bike tomorrow since it doesn't look like it will be getting too cold overnight.

@IWRATS living in a tenement, it would probably be deemed quite rude to even consider not leaving my roof at home...

Was pretty horrible @ 0730 this morning in Stockbridgeshire, blizzard conditions. People queuing round the block at Mellis panic buying Isle of Mull Cheddar.
Donned waterproof trousers for the first time ever - 15 mins later was blue skies and sunny. Arrived at work very boil-in-the bag, as couldn't be bothered to take them off. A lesson well learnt.

EDIT: I also donned an extra base-layer, so 3 in total, rather than the usual 2 at this time of the year.

Hmm, now it is snowing a reasonable amount at Heriot-Watt.

    @Iain McR The very same!

I looked out the window and swore loudly this morning, scrabbled for all the waterproof overlayers I own while shouting through to my wife who was leaving about ten minutes after me "I'm just ensuring you've got great weather when you leave by putting all my waterproofs on now".

As predicted by the time I'd got the bike out the house it had all stopped.

Edit: I got a text message later on thanking me for my self-sacrifice.

I went with biblongs under so-called waterprrof cotton shorts as forecast was showers rathetr than whole day (but yes did delay departure until clearer). Card were jammed so I double backed from road and went gigngerly along the towpath. Same again this afternoon?

@gembo the snow seems to have gone out this way now so I'd be surprised if it isn't merely wet on the towpath later, just so long as it doesn't become cold enough to freeze.

i went up leamington walk (i.e. meadows - bruntsfield) around 10.30 this morning just before a squall hit and was struck that the edges of it were slushy to freezing. the pedestrian side was just wet and the middle of the path seemed fine but avoid the far left unless you've got nobbly tyres or studs.

Clear run home tonight but when I reached Balerno very twinkly with the frost. Is cold. Therefore for medicinal purposes I gave treated myself to a dry oloroso sherry from Gonzalez and Byass called Alfonso. I commend it to you. Available from Villeneuve Wines

@gembo how damp was the towpath? The temperature isn't forecast to drop to freezing but I fear that ice is likely.

The towpath in the morning was slushy. If it had then frozen would have been tricky tonight. Dud not freeze during day so most slush npmay have melted? I can't say as I came home on the road

@gembo ah, ok. Anyone else able to shed any light on how the towpath is looking?

I refuse to believe that you have lived a full & exciting life and never ever put on a pair of waterproof troos before now.

there's only one place for waterproof troos

when you're trudging six miles in the dark up to some god forsaken rain lashed bothy with an unwieldly carry-oot too heavy for the pack

only you forgot to bring the waterproofs and firelighters anyway

try and remember gaiters at least next time eh

@bax San, you have to limit yourself on the Alfonso or you can get a bit squiffy, this being a school night and all.

    Loving your tales of hillwalking

After a circuitous trail around YouTube tonight, Celtic connections wise I listened to Edi raider, luke Kelly, Nick cave, Cait O'Riordan, Milk Carton Kids and bizarrely Rhiannon Giddens singing in very convincing Gaelic. They all love a drop of Alfonso except Rhiannon. Obviously Edi Raider is a cross between Eddi Reader and Darth Vader, another Alfonso Man

gembo-san i take it yr familiar with ron turnbull's book of
    the bivvy

i quit regular bivvying when my partner got lyme disease but its a worthy tome

CIA created lyme borrelia as bio-warfare test btw, no joke

@bax, good name Book of the Bicvy.

I have a colleague who recently came out the other end of Lyme Disease.

Not sure about CIA, though many curious things about it. Why Olld Lyme in Connecticut was such a hotbed of it in 1975, why it is so recent a phenomenon given we have always had ticks and why the vaccine was withdrawn.? All very curious.

I just came across Milk Carton Kids recently - excellent. Circuitous route to them was Gillian Welch, Dave Rawlings Machine, Punch Brothers, Chris Thile, Inside Llewyn Davis soundtrack, then the live concert inspired by the Inside Llewyn Davis film at which they appeared.

Can recommend the Inside Llweyn Davis soundtrack. I've yet to see the film. Had tickets to see Chris Thile at the Queen's Hall last year but it was cancelled on the day as he was stuck in Amsterdam due to bad weather. I hope he reschedules soon.

Towpath tonight was tame, lots of standing water not draining away, but nothing frozen or slushy. I was on studded tyres anyway.

Thursday morning I would expect a lot of the surface water to have frozen so caution advised.

george bush jr got it when mountain biking and got the iv cure but refused to disclose the effective treatment, as its too costly for lesser mortals insurance?

ray mears is similar. went private for cure but no details made public and nhs won't treat beyond 2 weeks doxy
